Sooo.... Quasimodo underwent surgery to have an abscess removed a few weeks ago.
He recovered and all was well, but the tissue seemed to disturb him. I applied Ceforal(antibiotics) but the tissue didn't look too good.

(the white powder is the antibiotics).

So, I followed my vet friend's advice and removed it... but was horrified to see exactly what I pulled out:

It seems that the vet and I were far from removed it all- and the abscess drained towards the cavity that was created during the operation.

Luckily, the tissue now is very clean and healthy. I applied hydrogen peroxide(you can see the tiny bubbles) and will continue to do so.

Here's how it looked last night after the removal:

Actually, I don't think I care what it is. It's one of the nastiest things I think I've ever seen. o.o


I do hope your guy gets better. I bet that felt better after being taken out.

That's how abscess looks like in reptiles, it's not liquid as it is in mammals.

It definitely looks better. Let's keep our fingers crossed it heals without anymore infections. Keep us updated...
BTW... Do you know what caused the abscess?

Make sure you drown that opening with the anti-biotics, hydrogen peroxide, and even perhaps some anti-biotic ointment for humans w/out pain killers. I don't think I'd be able to pull a second one out. Plus, I bet he feels better without that.

And no need to chance an infection again.

I believe hydrogen peroxide also kills new, healthy, granulating tissue, so you might just want to check in with your vet friend about how long you should use it. Man, that was gross. Poor guy. Best of luck in getting him healthy!

Everything is done as per his instructions so... rest assured, it's all well.

As for the gross part... well, yup.

But I can't say I am affected by it anymore... for the mere 4 years of herp keeping experience I have, I had to deal with just about anything they can toss at you.

Thank God I never had to tackle IBD though, nor cryptosporidium, Gah.

Wow this is an interesting thread to view first thing in the morning, I'm glad I haven't eaten yet, haha

On another note, I bet the snake feels sooooo much better. Good job on getting it out, hopefully everything heals up nicely.

Yup, t'was pretty darn revolting. I had a slight stomach contraction when I saw that thing but... you know, everything for my snakes

Thats amazing. I don't know what I'd do if I saw that come out of my snakes mouth. Man Oren, you have a much stronger stomach then I do. I think I'd drop my poor snake and then get sick..

Ewww!!! I bet he feels so much better now! I've heard that about hydrogen peroxide, too, that it "burns" granulating tissue. It'd be pretty cool to culture that and see what it grows, so you know what antibiotic to treat him with. Ick!!!

Yeah, I agree, working as a nurse I know hydrogen peroxide tends to kill new tissue. Its good to use right after an accident, but not for continous use. However, I suppose it could be different for reptiles? I'm sure the vet knows best.

Make sure the now clean crater doesn't scab over. If it does it will fill back up with nastiness. It needs to stay open to avoid that, and swabbing off any forming scab with a q-tip might help. Check with your vet on how best to keep it from scabbing over without damaging it as it heals from the bottom in, I am NOT an expert on that in reptiles (I'd know what to tell you for mammals).
