As you can probably tell, I did not find her this morning! I do have a question. I am not as optimistic as some of you may be. If, the snake got out in the car, what do you think the chances are that it survived the night? It got down to 29F last night. I had heated traps in the car and it did not seek them out.

If she were in the car she probably would have tried to find them since it was that cold. Darn man when I saw your post I thought she was found.

I had a loss in a car. No Lori not that!!!
I was getting my mice and pinkys from a local pet store.
They use to just double bage them. So I got two mice and few pinky to wack and freeze or feed. Well something happen when I got home and I forgot about them for a few minutes maybe 10 mins, by the time I got back I found only one mouse in the chewed through bag and ...parts.
Well the other mouse lived in the car for a while peeking out from time to time while I was driving. Talking about a wacked driver!!. It pissed me off that I couldn't find the turd when I was not driving. I did get him one day.
That's ended my days of pet shop feeders
 
Sounds like everyone needs to bring their own containers for a pet shop purchase!

The heated traps probably kept the car warm enough to avoid freezing. But she might have been too cold to crawl around looking for a better place. Maybe you can try to keep the car above freezing until the weather warms a little, or you find her. She may get out of the car, in which case she should be able to find shelter outside. Since it is mid March, the worst of the winter weather should be over.

Ya know how many times I have made this statement to people who make the "My snake got away" threads! This is the first snake I have lost and I didn't know the rush of emotions that run through you. RELAX!! Hardly?? I did my best to keep a clear head.

I have run through the trip nine hundred and one times (and counting). The guy boxed the snake, we put the box in a bag and tied it. It was placed on the counter and my wife picked it up. It rode on her lap on the ride home and the only other place that it rested was on the bed.

So I dun know! Thank you for the advice though!



LOL! I know, that is what I was thinking when they broke out the box. I figured I would be the smart one and put it in the bag, to be safe and cut out any drafts. It's still cold up here!



One of the manager's of that store is a real good friend of ours. I haven't spoken to her about it yet, but I plan too. I really don't "think" the store would be that underhanded, but then again, they are just people.

I just dont see a hatchling fleeing the inside of a car, or going that far. They find somewhere warm and dark and curl up. I think the worst thing to do is thrash things around. Id try and be quiet and slide under the bed with a flashlight, etc.

From what your saying, the bag was tied, the bag was on someones lap, I think it got out in your bedroom.
 
I think maybe the shop put it in a little hamster box, and then put that in a paper or plastic bag that was probably not stapled or tied shut, or secured very well in any manner. At least if they had stapled it shut after rolling the bag, it probably would not have escaped.
 
I would definitely suspect the car or wherever the box was first set down in the house and start looking inside/ under/ behind any places that a little snake could squeeze into. I have had a few hatchlings escape, and the ones that I found again were behind a book in a bookshelf, and squeezed inside a door jamb = opened door and snake fell to my feet. I hope the baby will turn up!

I really appreciate your thoughts, but you are taking me out of context. When I am saying "thrashing" around, I do not mean litterally. LOL!! I have been keeping snakes for quite a while and I even have a write up on my web site regarding losing one.

If I was sure, the snake got out in my bedroom, I would be more comfortable with that. But, since the last time I had seen it, was at the pet store, there are too many variables. She could have escaped that box and bag and gotten out at the store, into the car, or my room. Who really knows? I don't. If it got out in the car, who is to say that it didn't get on mine or my wifes lap and then dropped to the ground out side. If it did, right next to my parking area, there is grass and woods.

I don't think you are giving a "baby" snake enough credit. They are fast, when they want to be. I know, I have seen them move countless times. Especially when we photograph them for my site.

I apologized for taking you out of context. I would be thrashing or seaching like a lunatic so when you described tossing things around, I identified with that. I was only trying to be the calm mind as you have told people to be, because you sound like you don't think you are going to find her.


I dont underestimate a baby. I just think if it wouldve crawled out while on the counter or on your wives lap, you wouldve noticed. I still think its most plausible it came out in your bedroom.
 
A girl in my herp class lost her snake in the car on the way to school for a show-and-tell. 4 months later it was found in her dash when she was having her heater worked on. That was about this time last year, so it was still pretty cold at night.

Doesn't really help you, but might keep your hopes up...

I really really do appreciate your help, don't get me wrong! Don't take me as harsh, I am just frustrated and didn't mean to come across that way to you! I am really, really hoping it got out in my bedroom, too. That would be the better case scenario. I am at a point that I would love to find her, but I am done pulling my hair out over it! I have all the traps set up and if she is gonna appear, then hopefully we are there to greet her.

I forgot to ask if you own any other pets? My cats would be a great indicator if one of mine got out.

I dont want you to give up, I know its hard, but so many people here have found them after a long long while. Days, sometimes months.

Think like a hatchling!;)
 
I have cats! Problem is, that I think that cat would eat it! LOL! I am not giving up, but I am not going to loose my hair over it. I will leave the traps out everywhere except the car. I think if it was in there, it may not have survived the cold.

Wayne I feel for you! I have had this happen to me a couple of times. I found one and it was in the dirty clothes basket. To think I might have drowned her. The other is still M.I.A. and I haven't got a clue where he is. Just like you I tore the house up. Best of luck to you and your hatchling.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! Hope the little girl turns up safe and sound and soon for you. I couldn't imagine what I would do if my Sweetie got away...and to think, I brought her home in one of those flimsy little boxes too...

Want to hear a really weird snake escape story?

I have 3 Vision rack systems for my adult balls. One of the lowest spaces had the plastic "backstop" fall off, and I didn't realize it. That is what stops the boxes from going too far back, so that they could open backwards. Apparently, I pushed the box too far back, and the female BP pushed her way out the back. But the cage didn't look open, so I didn't realize she was gone.

Imagine my surprise when I was cleaning up the dirty cages and water bowls that were soaking in the dirty soak tub, when I moved a couple of them, and a snake head came up from below, looking at me! Like a little anaconda coming up from the depths, lol! Made me jump! Yucky water - hope she doesn't catch anything from taking a bath (hopefully not a drink!) in it. We put her backstop back on, so I hope her adventuring days are over!

Don't give up!

Darn Petco!!!

I really hope you find the little one. Strange enough, I went into a Petco for the fist time last week and saw the same deal you did and couldnt resist. I bought 2 Okeetees for $29 bucks a piece. When the lady came out with te little box with big holes in it I thought she must be crazy. I asked her if she had anything else and she came back with a deli cup. One. Since I had about four hours to drive toget home I put one in there and bought a cheap little carrier for the other one. Couldnt wait to get home and show my Honey. Probably drove a little faster than I should have.

FWIW, from what Ive read so far, my guess is shes in the house, since you tied the top of the bag. Unless, of course, someone couldnt wait to see her again and opened it to have a look at her on the way home...

Well, an update. Nothing new to report and still no snake. I am keeping my fingers crossed that she will poke her head out or get stuck in one of the traps, but who knows.
