But SpringTime is now officially here. I am going to be cutting back the refrigeration units and make it springtime in the reptile building. sigh........

Got some ads running in the local paper to get some help in here for the busy season. I didn't get rid of a bunch of adults like I had planned on doing, so I am projecting close to 6,000 babies again this year. I must be out of my friggin mind...... :crazy02:

I'd be responding to that ad of yours if only I wasn't across the country. I guess some local yokel will have the best job imaginable. I'm jealous!

No adult sales this year, Rich? :)

Better buy some Sta-bil for the gas in the 'vette, sounds like it may be sitting for a while.

Been meaning to do that, but just never got around to it. Now at this late stage of the game, I might as well breed the females and get babies from them rather then just passing them off to someone else so they can do the same thing.

Wonder how many eggs I can incubate in a 5 gallon bucket?

No way! I've discovered that running through the gears effectively clears out the cobwebs from between the ears. :)

You would be amazed at how difficult it is to find help around here. Most local people feel that the only good snake is a dead snake. I've always asked for some sort of experience in the ads and the replies I get are comical. Had one guy say that he came within 3 feet of a snake in Cambodia once. Another guy felt that "killin'" rattlesnakes was also suitable experience. And MANY people think that watching their cousin Elmer's ball python in a cage definitely qualifies them for the job.

I once got facetious with someone with that sort of a comment by snapping back with my own that I watch airplanes fly overhead quite a bit and was thinking seriously of applying for a pilot's license, since I am surely as qualified for that as he is for the job here. That one went right over his head....... :headbang:

Oh well, another "fun" year has begun... Better check to make sure I have enough Valiums on hand........ :crazy02:

Best job imaginable? I dunno about that. Taking care of my own snakes is fun, but I wouldn't want to take care of someone else's corns. I imagine with the limited handling time given to the snakes in a breeding colony the size of Rich's, that the daily tags would number in the dozens (at least). I imagine that there are some big ol' breeder adults in there with "very aggressive feeding responses." :grin01:

I would tend to agree with Dean. With that many critters there are bound to be a few adults that would have some real tendencies to feeding strikes.. :grin01: I don't envy you at all Rich, that is a lot of mouths to feed, and can only be considered severly time consuming.

Regards

I hadn't looked at it that way, but getting tagged sometimes is a part of keeping corns whether they're mine or somebody else's. It would be worth it to me in the respect that I would get to see and handle all these great morphs that I will probably never afford to own, & work with somebody that I could learn a lot from.
It's a moot point though since I'm on the opposite side of the country...I hope you find somebody decent to help you out Rich, sounds like the locals really are 'yokels.'

AWW, Man! I thought you were going to say that you got your 06 Price List done. :shrugs:

Heck, doing my taxes may have to be first on the priority list. That's another really fun thing I have to look forward to this time of year. If the IRS would just show up here in a bloodmobile and open a vein in my arm to draw off a couple of pints, it probably would be worth it to me.

They might like Rich, but they sure as heck didn't like me!

It's all feed response. I very seldom get a corn snake that just has an attitude and wants to bite out of meanness. The regimen around here is that the cage is brought to the work area, the snake removed to a temporary holding area, the cage liner replaced and the cage cleaned as necessary, fresh water put in, then the snake put back into the cage and offered a mouse. Many of them get confused about the sequence, and all they know is that somewhere in this process, someone is going to offer them a mouse. They know this only happens once a week, so they are just not going to take a chance at missing out and will sometimes mistake your hand for that mouse. Most will let go when they realize the mistake, but others just act like "What the hell..... it might really be food so I am hanging on!"

I guess I should change this procedure somewhat. What I have found with the babies is that I do it differently and they act completely different. What I do with the babies is to clean the container first time through the section I am working on that day. Then later on I come through with the feeding stage. Those snakes KNOW that the first time the container is handled, they are not going to be fed, so they don't go into feed response mode at all. However, the second time that container opens up, they are READY, so watch the fingers!

I think it would be really cool to see all 6000 of those hatchlings. Maybe not for you, Rich, but i think so anyway!
