What Would You Get?

I thought you would be modifying it by adding a lamp fixture INSIDE the cage, not on top of screening. IMO I wouldn't trust screening alone to hold the weight of a lamp.. I wouldn't want to risk a disaster of the lamp falling, burning the animal, and the animal getting out.

I have a commercial cage, Showcase Cages, which has a recessed area for a lamp, which sits on a "screen," but it is very heavy-duty, like metal mesh. I can't imagine it not holding.

rivets and washers are your friend, should you screen anything. The downside is that rivets tend to need to be drilled out should you need to replace/fix anything and that can melt plastic (I don't speak from experience at aaaaalllllll); I'm not sure how PVC would hold up. Could do nylon bolts and nuts.

Thank you Nanci and HerpsofNM! Will keep those in mind :)
Luckily I have tonnes of time to fix this thing up, and can get the materials for next to nothing (thanks for my wonderful partner). I'm hoping to get a baby - whatever I decide on! - in September and starting it in my empty 15 gal. then moving up to the large vive when needed.

I vote BTS also as long as you can modify your cage that has been mentioned. If you are looking for a reptile that is a little more interactive "loveable" then definitely a Blue Tongue Skink.

As Nythain said "adorably ugly" LOL.

BTS, BTS, BTS!!! ;)

Yep, the only reason 12" MIGHT not work, is if you mounted the bulbs inside... Effectively eliminating half that height to accommodate heat bulb. Since you intend to install screen and put the lamps on top, you retain full use of that height--making it a great height for a Blue tongue. :)

Yayyy! Now if anyone knew of any breeders in Canada (besides Mel of Mel's Exotics in Winnipeg -- I believe she is sold out) that would be so awesome...

;)

Thanks again everyone for the input!

I think there's a guy on RC named merauke BTS who breeds. I can ask Mel of her plans next time I see her.

Any contact info for that person would be super awesome! Even a website or Facebook page or something :)
Thank you very much for your help!!

Not that you are still looking this direction, but I would avoid red tailed green rats. I had a pair for a while, and found them to be miserable captives. I gave the pair away at a show to keep from having to take them back with me.

Oh thanks Chip!
I have heard that too, sadly. I would have been more interested in them as a display animal (with the bright greens and whatnot), but there are other alternatives for that as well.

You're in luck. Don Patterson just posted a group of Merauke BTS for sale. I will PM you the link. Hopefully you can snag one before they're gone!

THANK YOU!! I have sent him an email, and I hope he responds shortly. :) You are awesome TyeW!!
