While Strolling Through The Park One Day.....

Jay@PJCReptiles

"Quality Before Quantity"
Hi Everyone,
PJ was walking the dogs today at a local park that has a duck pond. When she approached the edge of the pond she happened upon this little guy. He is a Common Eastern Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina). He is very tiny so he must have hatched within the past week or so. We live in the city and the park is right in the middle. It goes to show how hardy some of these animals can be and you don't have to travel too far to go field herping. ;) PJ was so excited she made me take pics and post them for you to see (don't know why she couldn't do it herself, she has her own user name.....geez :p ).Here are a few pictures of the lil' fella. Thanks for looking and I hope you like.
Jay

Turtles are SO cute when they are babies--also they are fast too! We had a lady come to the library at the beginning of the summer with tons of turtles and a couple other reptiles--including some snakes--the baby turtles were SO cute, but I ended up with snakes because they stay cute when all grown up--and seemed easier then the turtles!

The man gets to take the pictures, that's why!! :D :duck:

Cute find, I can't believe how SMALL it is! Must be a tuff'en to survive in Maine!

Oh, that is so cute! Those are great pictures! I've pulled juvie alligator snappers off of the road, which they weren't too happy about. It's so neat to see them before they could actually remove your fingers!

Geez, great little find PJ! Nice of Jay to take the pictures for you...LOL. Cuz you do such a good job Jay, that's why!

He will be just fine in Maine seeing as this is where they live all year round. I will be releasing him this morning back to the pond. Just hope the ducks dont eat him.

PJ :wavey:

He's so adorable!!! They make really good pets, if you get one as a baby. I had one, about 4", named Precious. I gave him to a friend who fell in love with him.

Snappers are pretty cool turtles. I heard at one time that almost every pond up here no matter if natural or man made will eventually all have snappers in them. Not sure how true that is.

Great find and thanks for sharing him with us.

I caught an identical one a few years ago at camp. It's amazing they go from that to 2-3' across with one mean bite!

My son found a little snapper just like that this past week in the yard. We carried it down to the creek and let him go. That's 2 in 5 years we've found. Last one was swimming happily in the dog's water bowl.

Cool find! I have never seen a wild turtle... then again I do live in AZ... lol

It had never previously occured to me that that could happen! I feel badly for you! I grew up catching wild turtles. Sometimes you'd get lucky and they'd be away from water, but my sisters and cousins and I had perfected a way to catch them from a rowboat or kayak too. I just couldn't live in an environment without water, I guess. Well, at least you have desert torts??

Interestingly enough, in the 19yrs that I spent in Arizona, I never saw a desert tort outside of the zoo... on the other hand I ran across several rattlesnakes, who didn't want to meet me anymore than I wanted to meet them, we both went separate directions :)

I just saw one of these guys at the zoo today.. it was HUGE. I can't believe how small they start out thinking of how big that guy was. He was chubby and well fed. :D
