Who eats Quorn?

Thanks - I was wondering if anyone else ever heard of it, lol!

Yes, it has only been in the U.S. for a few years, and few Americans have even heard of it, much less tried it. That is why I was hoping some of our UK members would answer.

I did locate some - only the breaded chicken patties as of last week. We are trying to avoid bread, but did try some since there was no other choice available. It was really quite good! My friend's 4 year old said "I just love chicken nuggets!" - he couldn't tell the difference.

I have now located a health food store that has the ground beef type that you can add in chili and spaghetti - that is what I really want, and will try to get some next time I am in town. It certainly isn't cheap - about $5 for 10 - 12 ounces. I would guess it is cheaper in the UK, since the long transportation and various extra distributors are not needed. I will keep everyone posted on how friends and family likes the other types, in case it gets anyone interested in trying it out.

Anyone else here tried it?

Do you have sources to site?

Not really. Its mostly common sense, and things I've heard over the years.

But you seem to be yelling, and I'd like to see your source of information that has gotten you so angry over the situation.

I am KIND of yelling. It's of in the middle ;)
I am angry because I live on a farm, and it makes me MAD when you insult every farmer on the planet by blaming them for everything.

. A "trace amount" from a single farm...sure...but it is definitely impactive on a global scale.

If you can say that, that means that humans are impacting on a global scale to!! Because practically we produce as much methane as a cow, OR a pig, a sheep, a goat, a chicken, YOU NAME IT.

I agree that reducing the number of meat animals produced globally will not reduce greenhouse effects, and I agree that vegetarian diets are no more 'environmentally friendly" than any other mass-farmed diet.

Spot on, but what do you mean by "mass-farmed diet"?

Well, I can see that the nutritional aspects of vegetarianism, and the taste and nutrition of Quorn are not nearly as interesting as the environment, lol!

I just got a telephone call from the local Publix grocery store. I had asked them about the possibility of getting some Quorn for me. They said they are going to try carrying it in their organic / health food section! I sure hope they follow through. I will keep the thread updated with progress on Quorn acquisition, preparation, and eating, in case anyone else is interested and wants to contribute any experiences of their own.

Great thread, Kathy! I've been eating some veggie meals too lately. Although I tend to use tofu and tofu products. I've never seen Quorn around here. Have you tried any of the Morning Star or Boca products. They are both made from soy/tofu. I use the Morning Star "veggie crumbles" in chili and stir-fry. Its ok, but if you ever use it, just make sure not to ever overcook it...:puke02:

Edit: Hah! They do sell it here. It is at our local natural foods/co-op store.

We went shopping today and picked up our weekly supplies.....
Here's a few 'action' shots of the Quorn, and how we hunted the critters down...
Luckily they were all asleep in a freezer, a small herd of them...

They were quickly dispatched and went straight in our freezer without a fight......
It was all very humane.....

I had no idea they were ready to eat meals! I'm interested now, specially with only 3% fat and 81 calories, it will go hand-to-hand with my New Years resolution of losing a few pounds. :)

I'll start looking for them around here.

NOW you are getting peoples' attention, lol!

Looks yummy! I just made some tabouli salad, mixed with "regular" salad of spinach, bean sprouts, onions, peppers, and other veggies. Very tasty!

I also tried some of the various other veggie burgers, mostly the ones made of mushroom, veggies, and nuts, rather than the soy burgers. I have heard some things about the way the soy is processed, and some other questions about soy health effects that make me less excited about them, at least in large quantities. I will probably give them a try one day, though. All of this stuff is SO expensive! But OTOH, we are not going out to eat much like we used to, so are saving quite a bit of money there. And not buying meat saves money too. So hopefully it will all come out even.

My tomato plants are flowering, so hopefully I will have an abundance of those soon, along with some peppers and Cos lettuce.

I see the price printed on one bag - 2 pounds? I think that is around $3 - $3.50 U.S.? That is a whole lot cheaper than here!

It isn't just ready meals..... It also comes as *meat* chunks to add instead of meat......
Here's more info...

Yes..... Over here it's cheap and tasty enough to be a viable alternative to meat....

Seems like a good position to take in marketing. Seems like everyone these days is trying to cut fat! Their biggest obstacle is the word "fungus" - just doesn't sound that appealing!
