Yeah, but doesn't Rich require a $100 minimum purchase before he will ship? That's what the website says, . . .
Hmm, good point, didn't think of that . . . I was kinda making sure that the guy that runs this site, sponsors this site, maintains this site, gets a bit of mention that's all. No harm, no foul. :)

......Don seems like a really nice guy, and took extra time to answer a number of questions I had. It also seems clear that he considers responding to customers' e-mails and phone calls to be an essential part of the transaction, and at the end of the day, if I have problems, I'd much prefer to have the ear of one of the country's top breeders than a local pet store that doesn't know much more about corn snakes than what can be gleaned from a generic care sheet.
i would agree with you as i have dealt with him 3-4 times and he is one of the top breeders........nothing agains anyone else, i just wanted to comment on your post.
there are some great breeders on this site as well, you might even want to go to the "Cornsnakes For Sale" section and just look at some of the breeders pics and check out their websites.

I recently bought an Abbott's Okeetee (via FedEx) from Don Soderberg at South Mountain Reptiles in Texas: http://www.cornsnake.net

Don's prices seem to be pretty good (normals are $20, Okeetees $35--even most of the more sexy morphs are sub $100), and I felt that the additional shipping charge was worth it. Most of the local pet stores (I'm in the metro Richmond, Virginia area) simply didn't have a great selection, and the more I looked around, the more questions (usually unanswered) I had about where the creatures had come from, and how they had been cared for. My son and I had also decided that we wanted an Okeetee, and there weren't any to be had around here. Even most of the usual online sources didn't have any in stock this time of year. We decided that because we might have this snake for as long as 20 years we wouldn't settle for whatever the local pet stores might happen to have. We also wanted to make sure we obtained the snake from a really reputable source--and all these things made the extra $46 in shipping well worth it. The shipping process was really easy--I ordered her at about 11 am the day after New Year's, and I was unpacking her about 24 hours later. Don seems like a really nice guy, and took extra time to answer a number of questions I had.

Don's new book is also really good. Don't let the "Professional Breeders" designation fool you--this is really a book that spans everything from pre-ownership to introductory breeding.

[Disclaimer: Other than being an extremely satisfied customer, I have no connection or affiliation with South Mountain Reptiles.]

I know this post is kind of old but I stumbled across it just now. This past week I ordered a Reverse Okeetee from Don. I recieved her 24 hours after I paid for her and she is gorgeous. I also had many (many) questions answered by Don, he answered more then he probably should have LOL.....She was packed great, the price of her and the shipping was well well worth it.

I live in New York City, so obviously there is no shortage of pet stores here, but other then fish, I dont buy from them. I knew there was a particular snake I wanted, I knew no one would have it, and I knew the one store here who does sell alot of snakes absolutely REEKS! If you can smell an animal before you see it, its a clue they are in bad shape.

Even with shipping, compared to pet store (over) prices, your really better off this way.

Alright boys, who's gonna pop in with the "how you DOIN' post first?

Come on, step right up.

Actually, most of us who breed here can ship anywhere in the US barring bad weather of course so not having a breeder near you is not really an issue...

Rephrased to: Man, I hope this does not spread throughout our threads (no humor, but nice and direct)

I think we presume that everyone reads every post, actually. But, we also take into account the longevity of a poster, and hence make guesses about how much back-story a member will have.

It's what I do, anyway. There's a lot going on these days regarding appropriate behavior here, though, so input/additional perspective is certainly welcome.

Cheers,
-Sean

Do people always make comments, like the person their commenting on cant read it here?
This forum is chock full of comments, all of which are intended to be read by all. Many of the regulars will often bring things up from other threads that are popular jokes/ideas/concerns/whatever. Right now, the "boys" are falling over all the pretty ladies that have recently joined. They're all harmless (be a little careful of Jazzgeek ;) ) so enjoy the flattery while it lasts. This forum is more like home to many members so there is often alot of good-natured banter, ribbing and just plain silliness thrown in with excellent advice and knowledge about cornsnakes.

Yes, many threads get comments such as this, and are intended for the original poster (often), but also for the whole community. It is what makes it fun (once you get in the "groove" of it, and can enjoy it), and makes it a community. Once in a while, it can get out of hand and not be fun, but most of the time it really is good natured and makes us all feel like we are getting to know one another better.

Once you feel comfortable here, feel free to join in the fun (any and all who read this!)
