Affordable Feeders

Just curious. I hate paying pet store prices for feeders and I also don't want to make a bulk order shipment from someone like RodentPro, Mouse Factory, etc. Is there a way to get smaller amounts of feeders at bulk shippers prices? Sorry if this is a retarded question, I just wanted to find some that don't cost me an arm and a leg for 6 (or whatever) feeders.

Well you can get some orders of 25 from The Big Cheese (which is much less than the 50+ you have to get from the other guys). That's the best I've been able to find other than just going to the pet store and spending a ridiculous amount on 6, like you said.

And because of the way they're packaged, they really don't take up that much room in the freezer, so that's really not an issue.

I'm not sure how many members here are close to where you live, but another thing you could try, is to find one or two other snake keepers close to you & put in an order together. Or, if you can find a reptile expo near by, I've also heard they usually have really good prices, like 30 for $9.

Check reptile expos and local swaps. We've got a new f/t vendor who sells at very reasonable prices and doesn't require you to by in bulk. I got 15 jumbo mice for 11.75 and 15 fuzzies for $4.50.

You may also want to talk to a breeder local to you. They may make orders of 1,000 or so mice, and would be happy to sell you a few for a decent price.

Those are some cool ideas. I know a few people nearby but not sure if any of them would want to do that with me, but ya never know ya know? :)

Wow those are awesome prices! I'm definitely going to look for a good f/t vendor. The December reptile show was last Sunday. Bummer. But the next one is in three weeks so I'm definitely going to see if there's another vendor besides RodentPro there.

See if there is a local reptile club. Many of the ones I know Have members that actually raise rodents. Usually you can get a heck of a deal....

I would definitely (and do) add on to my orders for people who don't have enough need to fill a worthwhile order. I actually sell overflow to the local Pet Store I used to work at. I just placed a MiceDirect order in which I am getting pinks for $.08 and adult mice for $.34 delivered. At the local show the best price for pinks is $.33 and Emily paid $.78 for mice. Given that I usually buy thousands of mice of varying size at a time, I see no reason why 50 more or less it going to make a dent.
If you live near Cleveland there are people here on the forum that might pitch in on an order with you. (Danny/dwyn127 comes to mind)
Terri
PS-Sorry Emily you are my one exception. NO MICE FOR YOU!

I'm in the same boat, I only have one baby corn snake but I'm sick of paying for lots of pinks. If you need pinkies raynefyre, I'd be happy to partially order with you, I think there's someone else on here who actually goes to Kent too.

What size is your baby at? I have some peach fuzzies (2-3g) that you could use. My snakes recently outgrew them and I have some left over. You are welcome to them. :) Where you located?

Well I haven't gotten a scale yet to weigh him (hopefully a christmas gift) but he's about 21" long. He's just at the size where a pinkie is probably getting to be too small, but a real fuzzie is too big. A peach fuzzie would probably suit him perfectly.

Right now I'm at home in Brunswick, but after christmas break I'll be back at Kent. Are you at Kent presently?

Yeah I have a place year round just off campus. If you don't get a scale for Christmas I have one you can use. My babies are around the same size so you could possibly even use some larger peach fuzzies. Let me know when you come back to Kent and we can work something out. :)

Do you guys bring a cooler and ice with you to a reptile expo? When you buy F/T from a show, are you getting premium frozen rodents?

Places like RodentPro boast about the healthiness of the diet they are fed and whatnot. Is this of any importance?

Let me put it this way. Would you rather feed your snake something that has all the essential vitamins and nutrients it needs, or something that's skinny and sickly because it hasn't been getting the proper nutrition?

And I usually bring a cooler to herp shows with me.

Well, yeah... duh...

So how do I know if those rodents are full of the proper nutrition? Is this a visual inspection thing?
