Hatchling's Progress

(Just making up any excuse to come over and see them IRL) I can help you any time! Kathy Love's video is great, but sometimes it just helps to have a coach. The garbage can is a good idea.
Don't forget they hatch with a lot of egg yolk reserves to go on, sometimes they just take a while to get hungry. If I get feisty ones that don't want to eat but will strike at stuff, I try tease feeding to see if they go for the pinky.

After John and Tom, you have to respect the dibs!

But really, any one of these babies would make me happy (Nectarine!). My stripe clutch is due to hatch in the next 10 days or so and i may have some bartering chips if Murphy backs off and i get a butter stripe.

Lol! I've practically memorized the order of the list so I had a feeling you'd say this!

Alright, well that settles it! This week and next will be busy due to the end of the term coming up, but after that let's make a date!

I just got done with them, and I could only get hemipenes out of ONE of the babies! I don't trust my popping method to declare all the rest girls. I think I'm going to need some help!

At first I thought that this could be a hemipene

(Please excuse the band aid and dirty nails! I'm kind of a messy print maker.)

But THEN, Pomegranate presented me with these:
P1010348.jpg

P1010351.jpg

So I'm assuming the red dots in the first two pictures are actually scent glands? Is that correct?

Pomegranate's hemipenes really weren't that hard to get out, and I feel like my technique wasn't any different than with all the others. I'm definitely not confident enough to declare the rest females though, as I said before! Also note that Banana and Papaya were exempt from being sexed because they ate. It just feels so weird that I didn't get any more definite boys!

Nanci, I suppose you know from experience that extremely uneven gender ratio isn't unheard of!! The next time I take a try at them I'll try a little further down. They just seem soooo small right now! I don't want to hurt them, and I feel like it might be a little easier to use my thumb in the right spot when they're slightly larger.

I fed mine the day after they shed, not the same day.
Uh oh.. okay well now I'm worried about trying to attempt to feed them again too soon and spooking them. I don't want to offer too soon and end up perpetuating the problem. How long do you think I should wait before offering food again?

Alright, so summary, out of all 15 snakes, so far only one, Pomegranate, is a confirmed male!

Hopefully a few more (Pineapple, Pineapple!!), will be male. I just may need Jen's assistance!!

Thanks, everyone.

Oh, ps: Apricot still hasn't shed!! S/he really needs to get with the program! ;)

pps: my room smells like snake pee and slight musk!!

It's not so much putting pressure downward as rolling forward. It would help if Jen came over, popped one, didn't tell you the result, let you try, see if you were right or not. Then she could watch you do it. I learned on Tony and Tonya's giant clutch and the giant clutch of weirdo Miamis that Carol brought to Daytona. By the end of the weekend I could easily and correctly sex any corn hatchling.

I'd try feeding in three days or so after the first try. I only had one or two refuse the first feeding. And one of those was because I was trying to take pics. So after that I put them in the deli with a hot slit pink and covered it. I figured I'd worry about going uncovered after the first meal! Then they all switched to uncovered, then I did the third meal with unslit, just to make sure it wasn't the brains that were making them eat. Then back to slit.

I must have missed Lychee in the hatching pictures. We are just as beautiful as the rest of the clutch but we have the sweetest looking face.

I like cantaloupe, zucchini, kiwi, banana, pineapple and papaya.... I like the less orange ones, i think XD

pretty snakes!

Apricot finally shed! I think Nectarine's getting a little too much love, Apricot is pretty sweet looking as well!

Pretty sweet pattern

and who could resist that sweet little face?!
P1010398.jpg

I want to sex them again, but I also want to give them another chance to eat. I don't want to stress them out by messing around near their rear ends and then offering food. I'll do one of the two today. Maybe I'll offer every body food again and the ones that don't eat will be subjected to another round of sexing. If only I could tell them that!

Also, I just wanted to share with you guys my super cute house guest for the day!!
P1010353.jpg

This is Ier, a Chow/Shar Pei/ a few other things including supposedly Coyote!!
P1010358.jpg

He's a very sweet boy, I've watched him for my friends a few times already, and love having him. He's so good, as soon as he saw I was taking his photo, he sat and posed for me!

P1010365.jpg

I had to teach him that THIS area was off limits though!!
P1010368.jpg

Besides running up to me with my slippers in his mouth he's really been rather good. Hope you enjoy the cute pictures!

Puppies really have a way of charming you, don't they?!

He's very smart.. he knows that if he sits he gets what he wants. That combined with his cute factor makes him irresistible. Oh, also, he's taken to following me and laying at my side to the point of making my computer chair "his" area! He heads over there even when I'm up and about now!

I'm a big Pit Bull fan, but really, who can resist a sleeping puppy, no matter WHAT the breed?

Choosing a favorite is definitely hard!!

Alright, I've gone through and sexed them again, and while I am still not 100% sure that I caught all the males, I'm getting more confident in myself!

Here is the list so far by morph. The suspected females will all be checked and re-checked, because the clutch is still rather female heavy!

Butter Stripes
Banana - F
Papaya - F
Kiwi - F
Cantaloupe - M
Pineapple - F

Butter Motleys
Lychee - F Notes: Looks like she may have hurricane markings!
Apricot - M Notes: small kink
Nectarine - F
Pear - F Notes: small kink

Amel Motleys
Avocado - M
Pomogranate - M
Pumpkin - M
Peach - F

Amel Stripes
Zucchini - F Notes: medium kink
Fig - F Notes: Most likely keeper

Well, there you have it so far. I'm kind of bummed that 2 out of the 3 kinkers are Butter Motleys. Pear and Apricot's kinks are rather small and they will probably grow out of them, but still, it makes me sad!

Also, I think I got some pretty cool pictures of hemipenes minus my thumb in the distracting bandaid. Here we go:

Uh oh, Avocado thought I was getting a little too up close and personal!

Pumpkin's were pretty long!

I tried to get a nice comparison shot of a female, but they didn't turn out as clear. Pretty small focal range!!
