Hey Gang -

Long time no type. I've been doing a Ted Kaczynski for the past week, working out of my home, because two Fridays ago on my way home from work, my Ford (Fixed Or Repaired Daily) Ranger finally kicked the bucket.

After paying $400 two months ago to replace a freeze plug (it's about a $3 part; imagine opening a chest cavity and removing the heart to apply a Band-Aid), all the other freeze plugs blew out, overheating the engine as well as burning out the rotor to an unrepairable condition.

So, as of 1:30 pm today, I'm the owner of a 2000 Dodge Neon, purchased with whatever cash I could find between the sofa cushions.

On the positive side, I'm mobile again. On the negative side, I'm deeper in debt than I've ever been. I may need to reduce my stock to cut corners; if so, HARRUMPH.

I absolutely, passionately, positively HATE the stress of the evil necessity of car ownership.

Mmm i remember my first car, Terrible french thing it was... Dont get me wrong it was excellent to drive compared to everything i'd driven before it... but the actual car was a shed didnt look too bad everytime i went to look at it on the forecourt but as soon as i got it home and could inspect it properly.... urgh. In the end i sold it 3weeks later for half what i paid for it. Lesson learnt though!

Dale, we sooo feel your pain...We (the missus and I) have a 96 Honda civic and a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant on their last legs of many miles...Just when ya think you can enjoy the thrills of a no car payment life...well, you know...water pump and timing belt for the honda was over $1100 bucks (it's no wonder i can't get back to Chicago lol)

Ugh I hate my ford focus. It's a 2002, has had the entire tranny replaced, the starter replaced like 5 times, some crazy thing with the brakes, the fuel gauge replaced, the oil gauge replaced. :/ Can't afford to fix this pile now that it's out of warranty, can't afford anything else.

I had a friend who had a neon for years, he drove it into the ground. It was very reliable. I hope yours performs as well. :)
 
To quote my father: "I bought a Ford in 1998. I sold the last Ford I will ever own in 1999."

My ex has a Neon. It's actually a very nice car.
 
My last fix or repair daily lived up to its name, but I sold it, ($500!!) still running, with 300,000 miles on it, original engine. Of course, it was on its third or fourth tranny...1991 Explorer.

Thanks, Chris. This recent event just may prevent the Daytona attendance I was planning on. Major suckage.

Since moving back to Wisconsin from New York in 2003, this car has had the following repairs:
  1. New alternator
  2. New radiator/cooling system
  3. New battery
  4. 5 tires replaced (yep, FIVE. One NEW tire blew out after a year from a crappy wheel alignment)
  5. New muffler/exhaust system
  6. New brakes
  7. New transmission (manual)
  8. New timing belt
  9. New Freeze Plugs
You'd think I'd have learned by say, oh....item number 5, eh? :grin01:

Tim Maney has essentially taken a percentage of my paycheck since I've moved back. If he has children, I'm putting them through an Ivy League education. ;)

I think Al (my late father) has been at about 8000 rpm since I purchased this heap. He hated Fords with a passion; I can see why.

Nonetheless, it's heartwarming to see that MY father has been reincarnated as yours.

Flat out road debris
Foul'd on race day
Foul'd over rebuilt dodge
Fast on Roads... Downhill
Driver returned on foot (backwards)

(note... some words were substituted to avoid bannage... ;) )

All joking aside I'm sorry about your transportation problems. I just couldn't resist the opportunity to bag on Fords lol...

Sorry about your car troubles Dale, but glad to hear you were finally able to get out of that vehicle and into a new one. I know how unhappy you were with the Ford. And I have to agree - coming from a Ford family (my grandfather sold Fords and my dad sells Lincoln/Mercury) - I am the black sheep - I am a GM girl all the way!!

And hey - about Daytona - Joe and I only head out for the weekend, but we have a hotel room with two beds. If you can get down but need a place to crash, you are more than welcome to shack up with us!
