A Mojave Desert Sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes cerastes)

I have been wanting to find and photograph one of these little guys so desperately...and now I have. Full of piss and vinegar, this guy started buzzing us the minute we got out of the car, and didn't stop. He was in the road, so I wanted to move him off and let him go back in the desert. But everytime I put him down on the ground off of my hook, he came sidewnding his way straight for us, until I finally managaed to get him back and over an embankment, where I set him down and we could back away without him following us.

We didn't see anything else tonight except a D.O.R. gophersnake, but man...that was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. Such an incredible adrenaline rush!!

Thanks for looking!

Cute! But I was hoping it was going to be a rubber boa... and then I was gonna ask if I could have it...hehehehehe...

I have found that some of them react that way, then there are others that try to flee, literly hopping and jumping... Of course then the ones that seem to care less that anyone is around and lay there chilling like nothing is going on.. What really scares the be jebus out of me, is their babies, which seem to incredibly small, barely making a sound when they rattle.. Congrats, your now inducted to the side winder club, that rarely gets over 2ft..

Regards.. Tim of T and J

Nice catch! Haven't got one of them on my life list yet, either. Had them but never seen them in the will. Nice find!

Great find! What a cutie, but we need rubber boa pictures....

HAHA...I'm working on it, I promise! Actually...I'm going out tonight to an area that has GREAT potential for rubber boas...possibly even a rosy or two.

We had a cold snap come through last week which put everything down, but it has been really warm for the last 5 days, so tonight should really be an excellent night for snakes. I even found a gophersnake in the middle of the afternoon the same day I found this sidewinder. My girlfriend and I were riding horses on an old dirt road, and he was chillin' in the shade of an oak in the middle of the road.

Cool!

Bishop is the only place I have ever seen a sidewinder! Try looking on Line st about 1 mile west of main st.I believe there are quit a few out that way! Nice Find!

Out by the college.

Tonight I am on the prowl for rubber boas. Would be nice to find a night snake, too...but I'd be happy with just a rubber boa...

Sod the Rubber Boa's.... ;)
Excellent find....I love those little guys....
Interesting fact on cc's, they require UV in captivity......Not full on fish tank type kit, but forest tubes...
Thanks for the pics, I'm green with envy. The only way I'll get the chance to see these in the wild, is if someone looses a pet....And they won't be getting it back...LOL

Yea...I've decided that I will definitely own one of these guys one day. It was such a gorgeous little snake...

I also thought it was going to be a rubber boa! You know we all would have been jealous, lol.

Cool sidewinder though..

Cool find! I wish those lived where I do - I've always wanted to see one in the wild. I've been in their neighborhood before, but have never been lucky enough to see one. Thanks for sharing!
