Nanci thanks for speaking up but sadly Beth always finds a way to make sure she can open an old wound if it involves something I did. Beth where so far have I made a mistake with my KRS?

David, she's talking about the breeder who sold you the snake, not you. Just do an excellent job with the King Rat, and eventually people will see that you are fine with that caliber of snake.

Well I dont think the buyers would care, but our local FedEx might not be too happy about it if they found out we were shipping reptiles without being certified for it, etc.... the recent UPS thing has made me wonder about it, thats all.

True. It'd be nice if more employees of UPS and FedEx were informed some how from higher ups about what can and can't be done. Bad thing is I've been certified for almost 2 yrs and have still had a couple non informed fedex employees at shipping hubs give me a hard time. Trying to tell me I cant ship reptiles and have had to go through phone calls to managers and show my papers to ship. Most of the time it's not an issue at all because the people working there could care less what you ship let alone if your certified to ship it. It is best to be legal, unfortunately it still comes with hassles. Hopefully in the near future more people will be more accepting of our hobby and not do what they did to you to others. Good thing is you got your animal back safe. :)

David, I don't care if your mother is Terri Irwin, I think that selling a king rat to a child is a display of poor judgement. I don't care who you think you are, you are still a child. And just because things seem to be going well, selling a King Rat to a child, and shipping it via UPS, are 2 strikes against this breeder in the eyes of many people in this community. You would have done this breeder a huge favor by not identifying her, I think.

I have never, nor will I ever own a king rat. I have absolutely no desire to own one. From all I have read about them, there are valid reasons why they are not a popular pet. There are many species easier to keep and much better looking than a king rat, imo. Why would I want to waste my time, money and cage space on something that doesn't appeal to me?

Beth, I agree with you 100% but we need to stop feeding into David's trolling.

Lets get back to the Katie's original post. I was hoping so much that this will take. Seriously, if UPS does go with this and allow us to ship herps it will allow competition and help everyone all around.

I am just sad this happened and hopefully things will change and they will allow snakes and other herps to be sent via ups.

Excuse me...........Trolling I was called out by Beth for something that has been done and very smart members here say I am doing well. Also the breeder asked me wuite afew questions and I gave good answers. Beth and Jim bith of you don't own a king rat I do i know about them. I spent a long time studying them. they interest me and I have another breeder set up to sell me a male when I am ready.

Jim you are right. The poor judgement displayed by a breeder who would sell a child a snake that most experianced keepers wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole isn't the point here. Sorry I veered off track.

I think that eventually SYR WILL take. There are obviously some bugs that need to be worked out, but I'm sure FedEx had its share of bugs in the beginning too.

Actually the most experienced breeder love these animals and the simple keepers alone love em. What exactally do you know about them and how do you know that they won't? BHB has em they are the best right? Umm many private people keep em. Heck I keep one and have had not a single issue. I know people form the ratsnake foundation that keep em as just simple pets. I am not debating this you two dislike me I have to live with that I guess

I really hope I can get this straightened out so I can ship SOON. The email I sent to UPS about SYR being certified to ship snakes, just got a general reply with the list of prohibited animals... not very helpful at all.

The closest Fedex location to me is a 45 minute drive but UPS is only 10 minutes so I'm really hopeful that this UPS thing will work out in the long run. Best of luck getting this straightened out soon PurraLovesJazz. :)

Katie,
can you post that here for us? I think that would be helpful in the long run.

Here is the email they sent me:

Dear Katie,

Thank you for your question. UPS can accept certain live animals for U.S. domestic transportation, including Alaska and Hawaii, on a limited basis. This service is currently not offered to or from Puerto Rico, or international locations.

Packages containing live animals must be prepared in accordance with specific packaging requirements. This is to ensure the humane care and safety of the animal during transportation. Live animals will only be accepted for transportation when shipped via UPS Next Day Air service, Monday through Thursday, and not on Friday or Saturday.

Live animals that are prohibited from being shipped and are not accepted for transportation include, but are not limited to:

- Any mammal: Examples: dogs, cats, etc.
- Any poisonous, venomous or threatening animal
- Any Threatened or Endangered species
- Arachnids (All): Examples: mites, scorpions, spiders, ticks
- Birds (All)
- Crocodiles (All): Examples: alligators, caimans, gavials
- Obnoxious Insects: Examples: flies, locusts, mosquitoes, roaches, termites, weevils
- Snakes (All): venomous and non-venomous

Katie,
Thank you again for posting this information. I found it very helpful. I am hoping that SYR will work and get the bugs straightened out. I would love to ship my snakes via them over FedEx.

well my dad has experience shipping many many many many things and UPS is usually very rough and tosses stuff around alot. I depend on fed ex

I wouldn't expect cornsnakes to be on the accepted list since it's a special arrangement with SYR.

Getting Fedex certified was really easy for me. The only cost was the box I used for testing but a used one in good shape will do the trick too. You should be able to find tons of information if you search for it (I've seen several posts about it). If you have trouble just PM me and I'll see what I can do to help you out. ;)

This sounds to me like an individual carrier problem not a SYR thing. They have a number listed on their site. I would call them and talk to some one there. Emails are easily over looked and phone calls always get things done faster. It does no good to contact the general company, in this case UPS. I can call or email Fedex right now and guarantee the person responding will tell me you can't ship reptiles even though I know I can.

Edit: found the number 303-730-2125
