A case of retained sperm????(Update 5/31)

Walter,
When you ID an Ultra as an Ultra,
do you go by the head marker, eye color, or visual overall color?
Or a combination of 2 or all 3 of those markers?
I think you have a LOT more experience than me with Ultra.

Also, in the case of individual corns without the triple prong head marker,
but still having the "Lemonhead" coloring, (or extra yellow near the head on the dorsal)
is that placement of yellow generally an indicator of being possible het for ultra?
Curiously,
dp

Dave,
Sorry for the late reply on your question. I actually didn't know it was here until I came back today to re-read all of what Buzz posted.
Reason,.....the breeding of this mystery girl I did this year is just starting to pip today. I'll be posting the results once they all hatch.

ANYWAY,
I go by eye color alone. As far as the other stuff you mention, I have no idea???

Anyway, here is a comparison pic. of a Ultra Anery (bottom) & Ultramel Anery (top) eye color.
I typically stay away from any breedings (Ultramel X Ultramel) that can produce both Ultras & Ultramels in the same clutch as to NOT have to identify between the two.
Ultramels are "USUALLY" lighter in body color than Ultras, but you can't always rely on that.

For those who might be interested and following this "Mystery" girl.......I can scratch one thought off the list.
Seeing some here in this thread had thoughts of her being a Diamond (Lava Charcoal) I went ahead and test bred her for Lava.

The sire of her 2014 breeding is a Lava het Lavender (Pic.1)

The outcome of a 19 egg clutch (of which all hatched ) is 100% Classics (Pic.2), so it's back to the drawing board next season to try and figure out what she is.

Seeing Buzz didn't get any Anerys in his first breeding with her, I'm leaning towards her being a Charcoal. That will be the next test for her.
I'm still curious as to what is causing so much of her yellow coloration though,.....possibly she is a Caramel Charcoal ?? :shrugs:

Okay, I reread. What if Buzz's male was NOT heterozygous anery? She looks a lot more like ghost or ultramel anery than charcoal, although I suppose anything is possible. You need a powder to test her with!!

edit: never mind. I see he had a snow/avalanche offspring from a later clutch.

Dumb question. But it's been a long day at work. So I'm going for it. Is there such a thing as ultramel charcoal? Isn't that what my Rich likes??

Nanci,
Buzz's male was proven het Anery. Check page 3, post #30.

I think that rules out this girl being Anery, plus her eyes are way to dark to be an Ultramel.
If she was Ultramel, there should have been Ultramels in Buzz's breeding as well.

Yes, Ultramel Chacoals exsist. I have one and here she is. See that ruby pupil, the "Mystery" girl does not have that.

I can't help with the genetics, but I just wanted to say that she is gorgeous! I absolutely love all the yellow she has. Looks a bit Tequila Sunrise-ish.

Precisely what I mentioned to Nanci.

That's what I thought as well, but she was suppose to have been produced by Don (that's what was told to Buzz and which isn't 100% known for sure) and I don't think Don breeds TS stuff :shrugs:
