Biggest Wild Snakes You've Ever Found

I've caught several over 7 feet.....

I remember an Indigo we never got a good measurement on because we released him on the hunt but he was over 7. I've got two Yellow Rats at 7'2." And the biggie, an Eatern Coachwhip at 7'9."

Largest venomous, two Eastern Diamondbacks under the same wood pile at 5'10" and 5'8."

I occasionally see black rat snakes at work but I've seen one for the last five years that is much bigger than the others. It's not a record rat snake by far but it tops the rest around there, best measurement I have is 5.5 of my 13" long boots and the snake was kinked along its full length, I guess it's about 6.5'. It's also not the prettiest snake, with a heavy body and several scars, it's easy to ID. I don't have a full length pic or anything for scale. I do have a crappy phone video but I'll spare you from that, it reminds me of the "Sasquatch walking in the woods" video but not as clear.

I've never picked it up even though I had the chance because it's never been in a place it wouldn't be safe when I saw it. I only move the ones in danger of getting run over or being killed with a shovel by our ophidiophobes.
Last time I saw it was last June near this rat snake about 3.5' long.

The big snake had smears of something liquid with dirt stuck in it near the tail. The pics are from that day. I'm thinking the small one was a male? Either way I call the big one Marge.
I have not seen Marge this year.

Black Rat Snake rescued off a busy road in Knoxville, TN - Farragut specifically - beside a graveyard. Largest I have ever seen in the wild, let alone caught.

After pics, I took it back to the graveyard and released it well off the road in the back of the graveyard.

I know people have a way of exaggerating snake length, but I am 5'10" and this snake was about as long as my armspan. I would say it was close to 5 and a half feet, possible a little longer.

Oh, and the snake was as gentle as a kitten.

No pictures, but one Buttermilk Snake over five feet, and one close to six.
Black Rat Snake...close to six feet, maybe over.
I pursued, with fear in my heart, a Coachwhip that I know was longer, but did not catch it.

LOL... Oh, yeah... they are quite "fun" aren't they? :)

aw i haven seen any wild snakes because i live in ireland >.< its sucks ,st.patrick sent em all away :( he messed up big time ..lol

found a massive black rat snake a couple of years ago it was close to 7 feet i think i was shocked as i didnt think they could get that big

You know down deep you're really glad that snake got away!
But catching it would almost certainly have gotten Eric a lifetime membership in "BITE CLUB". LOL.
Yes, I'd imagine it would have done that. But, you know, some dreams are better left unattained.
:dgrin:
I failed to mention that the not the biggest, but "over five feet" buttermilk snake (a racer), when I worked it out of the rock pile, did land a giant bite on the bullseye bridge of my nose, right between my eyes. Could not have been better aimed. I had a hold of its tail end, and forgot the business end would be loose when I got it out of the rock pile. But I hung on to him and somehow dislodged him from my face. LOL. Luckily, for my dignity, I was alone. That was like 1979. (I am sure the "Great Overhead Deity" laughed mightily when that happened.)

Cb&m, they just keep on growing, I guess. I've caught long/large ones, and it's been my observation that the older and larger they are, the tamer they are. Makes one wonder if degree of aggression as self-preservation is "naturally" inversely proportional to age/size. I'm speaking in generalities.

The black snake hubby and I chanced upon a couple of weeks ago had to be close to 6ft long. When we first saw it, it was stretched out across the road and was a little longer than half the width of the road. That road was also very narrow with no shoulder that only the locals or trout fisherman like to take. But again, no photos to proove it.

The black rats snakes do get HUGE around here!

Devon

Black rat snake. I only guessed it to be 6ft. I'm 5'1" and It was longer than me lol. I think they can get around 7ft. I've seen tons of black rat snakes in my life, but have only seen a few of the really huge ones.

I see 5-6 footers every now and then here in MO. They are one of our more common snakes (those and garters, I see most often). But I would believe 7 ft! My husband's step dad caught (& killed, unfortunately) one when he was in high school that they laid out and measured to be 8 ft!

I've definitely never seen an 8-footer myself, but I'm not sure I'd chance the attitude long enough to get a decent guess on length if I found a jumbo black rat. ;)

The heaviest was a timber I found last year and the longest was probably the black rat snake that invaded my house last year. Twice!!
