Hey guys, i know some of you use the deviant art website on here but i was just wondering what it actually is? i have never really checked it out.
Is it just somewere were anyone can upload work or is it somewere for professionals looking to get comissions? how does it work all together?
i just want to know because i have jsut set me own illustration website and would like to get as much exposure for future work as possible.
thanks guys :)

It's a place for both. I 'devwatch' several people who do professional work, including Stephanie Law who has done several covers for novels and produced a tarot deck. I have an account just to share my dragon drawings because I enjoy doing so.

Yeah Deviantart is kinda a hodgepodge of artists...from kids and amataurs to professionals. You won't probably get many commissions based on them finding you on DA unless you become Hugely popular...there are litereally thousands of artists so it's hard to just randomly find someone. But you can post your art there and then link people to it.
I will warn you though. I have picked up several bad peices of malware and virus's from that website. They don't have an issue...but they sell advertiseing to ANYONE and many of those do have problems. YOu can pay to join and that makes the ads dissapear...but it's a risk if you don't wish to pay, which to me is kinda slimey. *shrugs*

Try RedBubble.com, if DeviantART has too many "issues" for you. RedBubble gives you an artist profile, and access to the networking power of international artists without ads, banners, malware, spyware, etc. DeviantART has some professional artists, but mostly it's "kids" running around causing trouble...like MySpace.

RedBubble is 100%, you set your own price markup, and there are no external ads on your profile. Check out my RedBubble profile--

I never really liked DeviantART. Getting around the site and using the groups was always a pain in the hind end. In my opinion, RedBubble is cleaner, easier to use, and much more valuable as a Socail Networking tool.

hey thanks chris il take a look at the now.
I did find the devint art website a little confusing when i first went on i didnt really know what was hapenning and where haha il check that out now :)

There is also FineArtAmerica.com, which I just found and joined the other day. Free, print sales available, and there seems to be some social networking, though not as "deep" as RedBubble...

RedBubble looks awesome. Thank you for the heads up! I have a dA profile, but I also find the site slow and hard to navigate, with far too many bugs and problems.

I havn't been an active part of DeviantART for... wow.. i dunno 10 years maybe.

One of my favorite things about it though, was that sometimes people set up community based gatherings. The first few times I went to "First Thursday" (an art walk/ showing in Portland Oregon) I went with a group from Deviant Art. As a high schooler I was just happy to get out of the house, but for someone who's serious and wants go get into the art scene of their town, community based things like that are substantially helpful!

Honestly though, I stopped using DeviantART when they started asking people to pay for things that used to be free, and then subscription use wasn't that great anyway. *shrug* disclaimer though that i haven't used it in quite some time..
