I never expected to own any snakes at all because I didn't like feeding them, but after someone ditched two corns with me I was forced to feed and care for them. I eventually got used to feeding them and developed a love for snakes. Then I joined here and learned about F/T mice which made feeding easier and also discovered so many different morphs and species of snakes and the collection just keeps growing but I'm completely happy about it.

I started last year with buying a Kenyan sand boa when I was totally expecting to come home with a corn. That was the day after this past Christmas. She got me over my slight fear of snakes and paved the way for more. ( Usually, when you remove fear, you replace it with fascination for what you fear! ) Next was Gar my hatchling Okeetee corn, then Achilles, the male sand boa. And last but not least and most recent is Draco the red amel adult corn. So in the space of one year I have gone from 1 to 4. I want to stop there for a while. I don't want it to take longer to feed my snakes than it does to feed my horses! I know that PROBABLY won't be it but I need to control myself for now. I need to get my 6 cats caught up on their shots, ( Now that I have a reliable and stable job ) get and adjust to being a dog owner again. I also SHOULD get a small reptile rack for when I feel confident to start breeding since I now have a breeding pair of sand boas and Achilles definitely knows what to do in that dept! I would like to eventually get a hypo or a bloodred someday down the road.

And there's a morph page??????!!!!! You guys are such a BAD INFLUENCE!!!!! I gotta find some reptile shows near me that are on SUNDAY since I usually work Sat. And yes reptile shows are VERY BAD too!

We do want more

Wow some of you guys have lots of babies! We just got our first one on the 15th but already are looking for another one! My hubby wants to breed them but first we have to get the money for the vivs!!! I have a feeling my office is going to turn into it's own viv!!

Okay - I'm gong to be an enabler! Vivs for babies can be super-cheap. You can use plastic/sterlite containers or old aquariums, which can usually be found at thrift stores. Check out the DIY thread for other ideas that don't have to cost a lot. Heh heh heh.... Go for it!

I never expected to have this many. Started with Joe getting one for a pet - then I had to have one - and by the end of the first year we had over 20. Now, four years later - between the two of us we have close to 150! But I still enjoy it and have to fight the temptation to keep buying more when I know I am going to be breeding my own each year now.

I have fewer corns than I expected and I'm unhappy.

That is what I voted. Honestly, I never really had any expectations on how many I would end up with when we got our first. We had been given a second ferret because everyone knew our current was older and constantly dealing with illness. However, the new one was acquired way too young, she should have been with her mom 2 more weeks. Not sure how though as it was a Marshalls. They are usually a lot better with their ferrets. Anyway, we had wanted snakes for quite some time and ended up trading with someone who had a corn but wanted a ferret.

Now we have 3, but we want more! :crazy02:

I have more than I expected, but less than I now expect! I'm happy but excited because I know I have some snakes coming this year if the hookups happen.

I have more than I ever expected, and I can't say I'm unhappy, just a bit more stressed at times than I would like. I'm really trying to decide about breeding this year, knowing that in two clutches I could have another forty mouths to feed and need to sell. There are many I'd like to part with, but sales just don't seem to be going well for anyone right now.

I currently have 6 corns in the house and I voted more than I expected but unhappy, because I want more and still do not have the my favorite morphs to start my breeding projects with.

I understand completely. I'm beginning my breeding projects, but I still want more to work with.

I never in my wildest dreams imagined that I would have as many snakes as I have right now.
I grew up with a boa constrictor for a "sister", and always wanted to have one of my own, but after seeing her outgrow my Mom's ability to handle her or feed her, I knew that I probably shouldn't get into those.
Then, I started dating, getting married, getting divorced, dating again...no other man ever shared my interest in reptilian critters until I met my current (best, and LAST) hubby, Steve. He'd never even thought about owning a snake before we went to our first reptile show several years ago and bought our first pair. Next thing you know, he was talking about breeding them when they got older, etc! Now, we are up to 30 (or more) corns, and own/operate our own breeding business. (Something I've wanted to do since I was very little was to be an animal breeder of some sort, but honestly, I didn't think it would be snakes!) Now that things are in full-swing for us...hubby sometimes talks about opening a shop somewhere (another childhood dream of mine!), but that is WAY down the road on my list of things to do at this point.
I just feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to do what I've always dreamt of doing...and it all started with two little cornsnakes, no bigger than a pencil when we got them. (There is a pic of "Jin" in the photos thread, he's one of our original pair! "Sun", the other, is nearly as big as him, and I use her pic in my avatar.)
If I had known about corn snakes when I was younger, I definitely would've gotten one (or many!). As it was, I had to settle for the (very) few garter snakes I could manage to catch & bring home. Sometimes I mourn the time I have missed getting to learn about & breed these guys, so...I have studied hard & tried to make up for lost time. My hubby jokingly says I practically have a degree in genetics...I WISH! (But unfortunately, there are no local colleges which specialize in reptilian studies of any kind!)
Anywho, I ramble.
Suffice to say, I am "living the dream"...tho, it might be a nightmare for some! LOL

A comment on another thread got me pondering on my habit. My corn-keeping began with single birthday snake from my kids in 2008. I now have 16 in the house, one elsewhere awaiting pickup, and plans for breeding/buying more next year. I've always loved all sorts of animals and been thankful to experience the joys (and tears) that come with breeding them. Genetics is a favorite subject. Colors are a favorite blessing. It therefore doesn't surprise me at all that I've fallen deeply in love with this hobby.

This made me wonder about others' experiences. How many planned to have only one, and ended up with quite a few more? How many planned to go large-scale and have scaled back? How many are happy about their current numbers?

So, fellow addicts, please think back to when you got your first corn. Is where you are now in terms of numbers where you expected to be? Thanks in advance for sharing!

My (pure) cornsnake keeping began on the Chinese New Year of 2009. I already had a cornduran purchased in winter of 2008.
There wasn't an option to vote for "I have obsessive compulsive collecting disorder regardless of the subject matter involved", so I voted and then discovered many others voted the same way.

As for "think back to when you got your first corn. Is where you are now in terms of numbers where you expected to be",

I can honestly say I did not think that far in advance. If I saw it and had to have it, then my knees went weak and reached for the cash. A hobby that sucks up as much money as having a pet yacht.

I handle them all, often even when I'm not cleaning their homes.

Lynnea mentioned the following....

"Discovering" corn snakes was a revelation--I should have had them a long time ago! I started with three in 2006 and have over a hundred now, including three GTPs, two BPs and two Blue Beauties!

I only mentioned the corns, I don't really need to go into to other specifics do I? *LOL*

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who goes weak in the knees when seeing a new beautiful corn. And you're right, no collection is complete without at least one Love snake.

Dead on! I think that's the best description I've ever read of the good folks on this forum! :roflmao:

getting more this week!

My wonderful hubby, the one who a few months ago said the only good snake is a dead one!!, told me he wants at least 10....I said yea, on CS.com..someone said "I forgot to stop at 10!" and he laughed and said well, maybe more than 10, we'll see. Now he is saying that we are definitely getting at least one more this week! We found an old viv at a thrift store..just need to bleach it out...question...off this topic...it had wooden hides with it. Can they be bleached too or should we just ditch them and get new because of possible parasites!

I believe soaking in water then baking the wooden hides will work. There are directions here on the site somewhere...
