Sad news. I said my farewell to Merlin, my wonderful Airedale Terrier, last night. He had a tumor in his intestines that ruptured. It didn't seem right to put him through a painful surgery and recovery period to extend his life maybe another 6-12 months anyway, if they could save him at all. I brought him back home for everyone to have a goodbye kiss and a last walk around the block. His head was in my arms at the end. Damn good dog.

I'm grateful to have been permitted to share the last eleven and a half years with him, and his memory will be with me until my lights fade out.

damn bruce, that sucks.... at least he's comfortable now. airedales are such awesome dogs too........

Sorry to hear your loss, having a dog that long then loosing them, is like loosing a member of family and I've experienced both so I know how horrible it is, but like zeewhiz said atleast hes comfortable and at that age at least he lived a full life, sorry again :( x

So sad :( I've "only" lost one dog in my life
and it hurted like hell. I hope your doing well coping with the loss.

Bruce, my heart is breaking for you and your family, right now. It has so hard on us to lose one of our best companions. You are such a wonderful Daddy to not have been selfish and let him go in peace. We want to hang on as long as we can but you did the right thing. Love and hugs to you and that you may find peace in your choice. He loves you for that. ((((((((HUGS))))))

I'm so sorry to hear this. Over the years I've lost dogs to old age, and it's never easy. I was once told by a friend that animals don't live as long as we do because they each have a lesson to teach us and we need a lot of instruction. Merlin evidently taught his lesson well and it was time to move on over the Rainbow Bridge.

I'm sorry to hear about Merlin. It sounds like he was well loved and he had a great life, although I know it doesn't make that decision any easier. We had to face the same decision for our cat. Either put her old body in surgery and let her live for maybe 1 month (that wasn't garunteed either), let her die on her own in two weeks or so, or put her to sleep where she would not have to suffer any longer. When animals go naturally, it's not quite as peaceful as people would like to think (if they see it happen). You made the right decision because Merlin got to pass on in peace with no suffering.

So sorry for your loss! I hope you will be able to remember the good times much more than the end time.

Good luck!

I am also very sad you have lost such a wonderful friend and companion. I never know the right words to say in these situations.. I am sorry Bruce.
