How many babies are you expecting this year?

This is my first year to breed snakes. I have one gravid female, who was proven last year, and a first-timer who just bred. I'm hoping for two clutches. First eggs are due in perhaps a week. Yippee!

Yowza yowza at the 400+ folks! Do you do this full time?

Every once and a while a buyer asks me if I have A THOUSAND + babies to sell, and/or a vendor mentions they buy by the thousand from someone. I always wonder how someone can do that!! Nothing wrong with it, just sounds incredible. I got the impression even Rich Z doesn't produce that many babies to wholesale.

I can only speak for myself, but I wholesale about half of what I produce. I will take a couple hundred to Daytona, and whatever is left I'll sell from my site and sites like this one. If there is anything left after that, I'll bring it Daytona with me next year:). At some point I might consider not wholesaling and doing more shows. There's apparently a good one in Columbia that's pretty close. I do have a "guy," up north that tells me every year he will buy everything I produce, but obviously he doesn't want to pay much for them...

Oh I certainly wholesale a chunk, it's just seems like it would be dull to make thousands of "low end" corns for wholesale. :shrugs: Not that a normal corn is less neat than a fancy-pants striped-ultra-hypo-goldbrick-plasma-cinder (or whatever!), in it's own way. Not judging just hard to imagine having that many pairs all wholesale. Is it even profitable?

I don't think I've ever turned a profit, but then, that's not why I do it. A lot of what gets wholesaled are bi-products of other, more "fancy-pants," projects :).

I thought about breeding more as I did wholesale some last year, but I would still have to do the work to get them eating, and at about $12 a head for non- high demand morphs it wasn't worth my while. I would rather breed fewer corns but morphs I can be excited about producing than just breed them because I know I can sell them. I guess it is a question of how patient you are, how much time you have to spend, and how badly you need money. If I wasn't working now I'd probably be breeding the females that I gave a year off to.

It's not a matter of breeding them because I know I can sell them. I roll my own, so there are a lot of offspring that are bi-products of my desired results. When you're aiming for a 1/64 you tend to produce a lot of possible hets. I wholesale a bunch of those. I'm not pairing up 5 pairs of Snows to so I can wholesale the offspring.

Chris O

Yea I understand working from hets is not the same as just pairing up any old snake just because it is a breeding size female. I am sorry, if you thought that was aimed at you. I will be doing the same next year working from poss hets with probably a lot of not-so-in-demand by-products, to prove out some poss het cinders.

Hmm, poss hets biproducts... makes a lot more sense XD I envisioned someone with like, 100 female and 20 male snows or something and was like "what's the point? It sounds kind of dull, and the $$ can't be worth it!"

A total of 7 known clutches this year.. I still have 08's not really intrested in being over run by animals..

Regards.. Tim of T and J

One thing about this thread, when we are all mostly just doing the pairings right now, how can we possibly know how many eggs there will be per clutch or how many of those will go on to hatch? My five pairings could go either way, I could get small clutches and just a few snakes or they could all be huge ones and I could be "over run" as Timmah says. Murphy could just make every single egg go bad, as well :flames:

I hope it didn't seem like I was offended. I had typed out this long detailed response, and when I went to submit it I got a "cannot display," message and I lost the whole thing. I re-typed a much more condensed explanation and apparently it reads as me being short. Hopefully no offense taken on your end...

nope! (I am just taking a break from doing taxes if that explains my seeming short on this end.)
I hate when that happens!

Well I already have most of my eggs on the ground ^-^ Yes they could go bad but I do not EGGSPECT them to
My girls are actually fairly consistent with their clutch size - besides that, people could just post the # of pairings they're doing. Just curious how big or small people's plans were :)

2 pairings, both first timers, as well as my first attempt at breeding, Just hoping for health clutches and babies. Hope everyoone else gets the same.

I wish for some pairing this year but........I have two very young ones and i have atleast another two-three years till both are ready (one is a confrimed female the other is a ify Female)
