I was surfing Craigslist, and came across a breeder that seems pretty knowledgeable. So guess who is getting another corn snake? ME! The only bad thing about getting another snake is choosing which on to get! I really need your guys' help. Please vote which one you think I should get! All are around 2 years old.

Choice 1- Butter Stripe- male

Choice 2- Amel Stripe- male

I really need help with this one guys!

Personally, I wouldn't go with any breeder that advertises on Craigslist. Selling animals on there is against their rules anyway.

There are so many good breeders HERE, why not support them?

Beth - I can't speak for Dakota, but shipping is often the price of another snake, at least a common morph hatchling. When you add that $50 to the price, it can hurt, especially if there is someone local with morphs you'd like to get.

My insanity over that usaully has me max out the number of snakes bought for the same shipping cost (Thank you David P. for telling me that, talk about upselling!)

This is the reason. When I got my second snake, I used ReptMart, and a $35 charge turned into $75. I LOVE you guys, and if any of you lived closer I would definitly go to you first, but I'm only 16, and babysit for money. Anyway to save money is good for me. This person seems reputable. They use heat tape, thermostats, have a lot of different morphs, don't cohab, pretty much all you need for a nice healthy snake. I feel I can trust them. Thanks for your concerns though. And thanks to everyone who has voted!

I think I've eliminated the amel stripe, because I already have an amel. I'm kinda of between the butter and anery, but I just LOVE the contrast on the RO. High contrast snakes have always been my favorite. But I will regret not getting a stripe. ARG! Maybe I should just get them all. My family already thinks I'm crazy.

Dakota -

You can always ask if for their best price for these 2 (or 3 or 4) snakes. All they can say is "no". I know some sellers hate that, some don't mind the asking - but still say no, some will offer something off. And sometimes they make the offer before you can ask!

Good point. I was actually thinking about that before, since I'm also buying some heat tape. But I don't think I'm ready for 2 more snakes. That'd be kinda pricy for thermometers and dimmer switches. I think I'm leaning toward the anery or butter, since I have wanted a stripe for some time and will regret not getting one, and I have an amel that's kind of the same colors. Now which to choose...

I personally would grab that anery pinstripe motley in a heartbeat! That is going to be a gorgeous snake, and at first glance, looked like a tessera due to the dark outline and perfection of the stripe and the lack of distinct lateral markings (granite motley?). It wasn't until I saw the tail that I figured it wasn't a tessera, and then I'm not 100% sure it isn't. I can see some lovely pinkish hues (or it's the lighting/photo) as well.

While I voted for the RO, listen to Susan. I think she is right about the Anery and ROs aren't too terrible hard to find. That Anery is a gorgeous snake.

Ya know, I actually thought the same thing about the anery maybe being a tessera. It just has that look. I think that's the one I'm leaning toward, my dad, most of my friends, and a lot of people on here are agreeing on that one, but I'm still not 100%. I'll probably have my mind made up by tomorrow though. I love picking out snakes :)

Another vote for that Anery. Oh my gosh that's a gorgeous snake. I'm with Susan--it'd be hard NOT to snatch it up in a heartbeat, if I had the chance!

Before seeing the photos, I thought, meh, anery motley. Then I saw the snake. Outstanding.

I think I will go with the anery. He's $25 cheaper than the butter, I really want a stripe, and you guys make some good points. I'll just make sure first that he doesn't have any feeding problems (I already have one stubborn eater and she drives me CRAZY) or any other health issues. If all looks good I think he's the one.

Yea. I was going to, but that'd be almosy $200, plus I'd have to get 2 thermometers and 2 dimmers. I don't have that money right now. Who knows, maybe if she still has him in a couple of weeks..

Well- virtually all butter stripes are beautiful, and very uniformly so. It would be quite easy to locate one some day in the future. An anery pinstripe motley like that- much more difficult to find. I can't say I've ever seen such a nice one.

That's actually what I was thinking. I will probably be able to find one in the future. I've actually seen one at petco last year. I texted her and I'm getting the anery next week. I'll post better pics when I get him :)

Good Thread.

A few things to consider.
The colors one sees in a photo are sometimes different from how they look in the 3-D world. Because the color our eyes perceive is based on the wavelengths of Light reflected off of anything. So if the lighting is blue-or pink-or yellow spectrum,
or,
if the walls in the room are painted pale mauve, then the light reflects off the walls in the room,
all of these things can change the color as we see it on anything, especially glossy things, like snakes for instance.

Shipping vs spending hours at emails, studying pictures, making the drive to go see them in person, feeling like we should buy something once we get there so "it's not a wasted trip", making purchases while emotionally compromised (something everyone has done at one time or another)...the costs of shipping vs going shopping may well, in the end, zero each other out.

Get the snake you want, but make sure its the specific individual you like the most. I like reptile show/sales because there's often the same genetic combos on a few different tables, but some might be lighter/darker/variation-on-pattern, Labeled Hets, etc. Some of these things may be more important to persons who are contemplating breeding vs persons looking for a pet. Make sure it compliments your complexion. I like dark ones.

FOR ME, It's not about whether it's a $65 or $200 RO. It's about whether or not I want the specific individual snake. There's a lot of variety within even single-gene snakes. Lavenders can be gray or dusty purple or pinkish, so there's always a variety of pricing going on there. You're not buying a gene, you're seeking the individual which is going to be with you a long time. It's a lot of work, but it's something you want, so it doesn't seem like work, and yet it can be emotionally draining. Don't fret, when you find the one which is right for you, you will know it.

Different persons sell on craigslist. Often asking some basic questions will give you a better idea of the current keeper's situation & stuff.
How often does it feed?, do I need a heat lamp? , Can I feed it crickets? Will it be okay to keep it in my son's old hamster cage, we have some leftover cedar chips... I'd like to get the yellow one and the black one my friend told me I can have up to 4 in the same ten-gallon.....Ask some MISleading questions as well as real questions before making a decision to drive there. Think of the savings... consider the risks. That will give you a better idea if this is really the snake for you.

In the end it's all about the choices we make and have to live with. There is much to consider. Thanks for this rather good thread.
