My wife and i agreed i can get 2 more snakes but boas and pythons i am not allowed. I was just wondering if any one here has a king snake or milk snake and just wondering how are they to take care of and how big they usally get and what the additudes are like. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

MBK! MBK! Seriously a Mexican Black King or a Black Milk Snake would be great choices.

Elle says MBK's are...poncy lol They get about three feet and good lines have no speckling and turn out a solid black.

Milks are bigger, about twice that when grown and they start off tri-color and go black which is cool to watch.

Both can be kept at the same conditions as Cornsnakes.

MBK's are poncy. You need to get yourself a big black milk snake! It's like having two snakes in one. They go from this:

To this:

And he is nowhere near the impressive 7ft adult he could potentially be.

Heres Noir's progression thread :)

Oh and want to know the best thing about them? They have silky smooth scales... seriously. Gotta feel em to believe it.

My little kingsnake is EVIL!!!!! But that's just one out of many. I'd probably go with a black milk. I still need to get one myself...

Milk and King are good snakes to work with. The basic husbandry and care are very close to that of corns. The one thing I would suggest is to make sure that it is a great feeder. Some king and milk species can be problem feeders when that very young.

What King or milk are thinking of getting?

Hmmmmmmmmmm propally a mexican black king snake as no one can get the black milk snake. Then some sort of milk snake just not shure what yet

Okay I am now officially in love with Black Milk snakes!! lol..and I need to get one :0)

Whatever two snakes you decide to get I wish you the best luck on and can't wait to see pics :0)

If size isn't really something you feel you -need- I'd really recommend the Thayeri Kingsnake, or variable kingsnake.
It's like having morphs without needing to add recessive genes- every hatch is a surprise.
And some of them can be absolutely amazing. They are also very docile, small(mature at around 1 foot) and nice looking.
The only drawback is their capability of being problematic feeders after hatching- do not buy one that hasn't eaten a f/t pinkie willingly.
And "starting" future babies can be a slight project but I feel the diversity you get and the coloration are unmatched by any other colubrid.

Oren (Kokopelli) has some great points about the Thayeri... I've often thought about them myself.

I think Kings or Milks are the best way to go. Once they're started, they're no problem at all. So the way to go is to get one that is well established.

Hope you get it all figured out soon! Can't wait to see pics!

I've never been particularly interested in kings or milks before, but this thread is making me want a black milk snake! Gorgeous!!!

There are so many beautiful kings. I can't decide between a Goin's king or a Black and White Aberrant king. Or maybe an Albino Striped California king.

i keep of course corns.. Cal kings and albino nelsons Milk snakes and thayeri... i must admit.. out of the 3... the calmest is thayeri... i LOVE them!! i only have 3 right now... but i have 4 on order :) post pics when you get something!!

I also recommend a thayeri, mine is just the sweetest little snake ever plus he is beautiful. My MBK is awsome too but she is a complete spazz. I've actually came to like kings more then corns and hopefully if I manage to sell a few of my corns, I can get a mate for my thayeri.

I have two thayeri, and they are wonderful little snakes. They have beautiful colours, they feed enthusiastically, and they have great temperaments. My pair are coming up to about eighteen months old, and feeding on rat pinkies at the moment, or small fuzzy mice - they're tiny.

The only other kingsnake I keep is my MBK, Sabrina. She's about adult corn snake size, and a real sweetie with me, though she has been known to bite men before. I love black snakes, and I like the fact the MBK is a good size for me without being too big, though I'd like a melanistic thayeri in the future so I can have a tiny black kingsnake.

Why no boas or pythons btw? A children's python or spotted python would be a great small pet snake ...

My wife and i agreed i can get 2 more snakes but boas and pythons i am not allowed.

Tis why we mention colubrids and not boids.

I personally would say those or even a rubber boa would be fine for a small pet snake.

Ya but small pythons in my mind are not a python then. I had an 7 foot female jcp and an 8 ft redtail boa but had to sell because my son came along. Maybe one day aagain. Do milk snakes and king snkaes get bigger then corn snakes or are they smaller. Also if any one noes anyone who breeds rat snakes or gopher snakes if ya could let me no that would be great. Thanks for the help. Coryell

Thayeri are the best,..

I keep several different kings and milks, But thayeri are my favorite, i raise mbk's, thayeri, mex mex and a few corns and boas along with hondurans and black milks. But the thayeri remain my favorite they are docile and easliy kept. Very temperature tolerant. I currently keep over 80 thayeri breeders not counting babies and newly acquired hatchlings. Even if I were to never breed them again I would still keep them out of shear enjoyment and I like the fact that no two are alike the varabiltiy in them is awesome. I have the melanistic, milk snake phase and the leonis in every color range imaginable. they are just truly fantastic snakes. It is fun to see them hatch, each egg holds and entirely different looking baby, very exciting to watch. Just don't buy out the egg babies or non feeders, since sometimes they can be hard to get started. I have kept them for over 10 years and been breeding them for over 5 now. Personally I only offer them for sale after they have taken at least 6 meals or more, just to be sure they are solid feeders. So be careful when you buy and make sure they are feeding solidly on f/t and not tease feeding or feeding on lizard scented pinks.
