New arrivals: Candoia carinata group.

It's Jager time!
I got these 4 proven specimens from a guy who lives in London who has had some success with them, but has never been able to keep the babies alive. So after not much convincing they are now mine :) He came all the way up on the train to deliver them, what a nice guy!

He has had them for a good few years and they were originally WC from Kaifu Isle (best known for yellow adult chondros).

Wee bit about carinata for those that are curious. They are pacific boas, commonly known as Indonesian tree boas (different common names depending on the Island they were collected from). They are arboreal obviously, but still spend a lot of time on the ground. They are the smallest of the Candoia genus. I will need to get weights of the adults but they are certainly no more than 200 grams for the females, and I would be surprised if either of the males was 50 grams. I will get some decent size comparison pictures when they settle in.

These are ready for breeding now, so I have them housed as 1.1 pairs. If any of the females take, I won't see any babies for at least 8 months. And they tend to give birth to more than 4 at a time. Then when the babies come they are impossibly small and don't want to feed. THUS why I want to have a darn good try at breeding and keeping alive some of the first CB carinata.

I'll stop babbling. Here are some quick crap shots.

Here's the first female: Lyra. I had the displeasure of being musked by her. What a foul experience. But not half as bad as being musked by the tiniest male.

Second female: Lunar Dawn.

Biggest male: Obsidian Fyre (My fav specimen in the group)

Smallest of the whole group: Bluemoon Wolfboy. He sports the common pattern and colouring of carinata... but I wish he was striped.

Thanks Toshie, mine tooo :)

And he is the sweetest natured.

The bold stripeyness of them all is rather unusual... as is the colouration. Perhaps it's down to locality?

What a fantastic group! I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you have success with breeding and babies. You are so good with other non-feeders that I believe if anyone can do it - it would certainly be you!

Stunning little boids! I really like the striped ones, but there is something about the dark colors with the trace of light orange of Bluemoon Wolfboy that is very intriguing! Perhaps when you are successful in getting eating offspring (and if anyone can do it, it's you), you'll be able to get the dark coloration with the stripe!

Elle,
From what I am told you can get them to eat by feeding them lizard tails.
If you can get some anole's or other small lizards it may work out best for you on those.

But alot of people push aside Dwarf mouse pinks. I think if you had a colony of them and froze the babies you might be able to feed the babies on these as well.

I agree with you Elle, Obsidian Fyre is my favorite as well.
I am looking forward in getting some pairs this spring of Candoia carinata carinata and maybe a pair of C. c. paulsoni as well.

Thanks Katie, I knew you would like them :) I don't think it's just down to feeding... apaprently Guy got them feeding and they STILL died :( Same with his aspera babies last year.

I love Wolfie too... he is the tiniest. He is probably only 20 grams or so. I neeeed to get decent comparison shots for their size.

I have put him in with Lyra to get some of that bold dark stripyness hopefully.

I want... so very badly do I want this group. Another stunning group, Elle! I'm looking forward to pictures of gravid females and tiny boa birth!

Thanks Robbie... I keep checking on them to see if they are hooked up ;) Guy said Wolfie was a very aggressive breeder for such a tiny dude LOL.

Yup I know about all those tricks :) I fully intend to get some anoles for freezing. I guess I won't need to even think about it for at least another 8 months though LOL... Long time to talk to other breeders and do my homework.

Wolfboy is my favorite too...

Great looking group. I'm going to have to steal them soon.

Thank yeee!

I hope you do get some. They are such special wee snakes. I can't believe 2.2 adult proven boas fit into my tiny handbag. LOL. I giggled to myself on the train with them.

LOL why do you think I told myself , i am going to get some next year, when I got to hold the snakeguru's pair?? I fell in love with that species.

I also enjoyed the thought of keeping an adult boa in a 5 gallon aquarium.

You sure? The guy that owed this group also has a breeding group of rubbers and I mentioned the size comparison, he said the rubbers were far bigger.

awesome group!! candoia is still my favourit species of boas, your animals are great examples to show why they are ;)

I keep my fingers crossed for vital babys! WCs HAVE TO breed, otherwse it's a sin to keep them ;) good luck with them!! :wavey:
