LIBERTY EYLAU, TX (KSLA) -

Authorities believe a homeowner's response to finding a snake in her yard may have led to the fire that destroyed her house Wednesday.

The fire sparked at a home on Will Smith Road in the Liberty Eylau area of Bowie County, TX just before 7 p.m.

"While cleaning up, she saw snake, threw gasoline on the snake, lit the snake on fire," said Deputy Randall Baggett with the Bowie County Sheriff's Office. "The snake went into the brush pile and the brush pile caught the home on fire."

Despite the efforts of several fire departments that responded to the scene, the flames completely engulfed the home. It is a complete loss. A neighboring home was also damaged on one side.

Liberty Eylau Fire Chief David Wesslehoft says they are still investigating the fire, but that it's not unusual for a burning animal to spread a fire.

"Yes, it could happen with rabbits and big field mice. Once they start burning the grass, they get out of their hole, they have been known to catch fire and then take off."

Still, the chief says, a fire started by a burning snake is a first for him.

There has been no word from officials on whether charges will be filed.

That last sentence....genius.

I'm glad the woman wasn't hurt, but I have to admit that there is a small spark of satisfaction that her cruelty came back to bite her in the rear.

Indeed. And maybe I am reading the last sentence wrong, but it came off to me that they were undecided if they would file charges against the snake for burning the house down.:bird:

It would be the authorities filing charges against the homeowner, and I hope they do it.
1) with the wind like it is in the Las Cruces/El Paso area this time of year, fire is a horrible idea due to it getting out of hand.
2) She not only put herself at risk, but her neighbors could have lost their homes as well.

While I think that Karma was great in this instance, teaching her a lesson for her cruelty, I believe that the law should teach her a lesson as well. Not only was it animal cruelty, but human lives could have been lost.

Apparently that woman has never watched an action adventure movie in her life. Did she honestly think to herself "if I set this living creature on fire it will just lay there calmly and die" DUR!!!!

I'm glad that the neighboring house was only damaged & I'm glad no one was injured (cept that poor snake) but I do have to admit I'm also kinda glad her house was a total loss. It really is amazing how fast karma works sometimes ;)

I'm in Bowie County! A few minutes away from Liberty Eylau. I didn't even hear anything about this on KSLA. Cruel people get what they deserve though.

I just heard about this in CNN. She owned the house next door that was damaged as well! Good job kharma.

You get what you deserve...

Serves her right!! She should also be charged but I am glad she lost her home for being so cruel.

Karma's a B.....!!

Being a dumbass is one thing, I kind of feel sorry for them. Being a cruel dumbass is totally different. Not only am I glad this happened, but if she had been injured I would have a hard time finding pity for her. Hope she gets charged and pays through the nose.

Instant Karma is the very best kind. I'm hoping the insurance won't pay out, since she intentionally set the fire that ended up burning down her house.
I think being charged with arson would be good, too. She put anyone in adjacent homes at risk, as well as the risk to the fire fighters when trying to put out the fire.
A charge for animal cruelty seems to be called for as well. To set a living creature on fire is so far beyond just cruel. I hope they treat it as they would if she had set a stray dog or cat on fire. It's the same thing, but sadly, I doubt they will look at it that way.

This might be a dumb questions, but what the heck, it wouldn't be my first: I assume the "charges" they are talking about are for damage caused by the fire, not for animal cruelty. Is there no legal consideration for cruelty against a snake? Surely if you lit a stray dog, or even a live wild animal like a coyote on fire, you'd probably face charges. Am I wrong (again, wouldn't be the first)?
