To Susan, Carol, Kathy, and all those here in 2002

I was bored and decided to read some really old posts. I was browsing the Discussions about this site forum and noticed that Susan has been here for a long time. Then I did a quick search and noticed that Carol and Kathy have been too.

So, I'm wondering if all you first generation CS.com forum guys would share your feelings about the site over the past eight or so years. How was it before CS.com? From what I briefly read, there was an old forum, or one on SerpenCo? Do you enjoy the site just as much or more than back in 2002? What were some traditions you developed that are no longer here?

Please share some memories! (And boy, aren't I nosey. Lol)

Kudos to you, Halley! What a very interesting topic you've brought up. I look forward to reading what they all have to say!

From what I remember...

most of us "old timers" (including Rich Z.) used to hang out mostly on the corn snake forum on kingsnake.com. We had some great discussions back then, but it was mostly confined to corn snakes. But when Rich and a whole bunch of other people got banned on KS, many of them migrated over here. I believe Rich already had a small corn snake forum, but when all of the new "ban-ees" started looking for a new home, I think Rich expanded it to accommodate everyone. I am never one to change easily when it comes to computer related stuff, but once a lot of friends left, Chuck and Connie practically dragged me over here. It was a very different format here than KS, and I was even less computer literate back then than I am now (hard to believe, I know, lol!). But once I got used to it, I began to enjoy the ability to have discussions with online friends about way more than corns. Even after some of my best friends left this forum, I stayed behind because there are still lots of good friends and good discussions here (although I do go to other forums, too - I just don't spend as much time anywhere else as I do here.)

I was just reading a thread from way back when talking about "That site" but it can't be KS.com because it was made in 2004...

I am curious as well why there was mass banning. As for KS.com's setup, I personally can't stand it, but I grew up on forums set up like this. I was also reading about all the server upgrades and curious as to how much bandwidth we use now. Back then, 200gb seemed enough for this site. I bet we use close to that in a few days.

Oh KS was around well before 2004.

As far as the question, WOW, how much time do you have? Ups, downs and everything in between. It would take me a week to come up with a decent post. Lots of things and people I miss, but there are some cool "newbies" too. :)

Lots of times people here refer to "The Other Site" in reference to Chuck and Connies cornsnake site. I personally don't like the layout of that site and I've heard it is much more strict on people disagreeing... at all, ever. For some people that's a plus, and for me it's a con.

That is so funny! I came here in the fall of 2005 because I was banned from ks.com!!! :) I guess I am in pretty good company!

FWIW KS.com and Jeff B. had a bad rep at the time due to his nazi forum police and mass bannings for dumb things like mentioning another herp site or ideals that weren't in align with his. His actions led me to leave KS.com and rarely visit. I still follow this site on a daily basis since it has always been my favorite due to the people involved (for the most part). I still believe this to be one of the best sites that is still popular/alive today.

Hrmmm, well I'm a few years later than what you requested, but I remember the changes the site has gone through over the years. I miss CAV's grotto and Mdorfer's 3 cools seal of aproval :)cool::cool::cool:), Dale's wit, Chuck and Connie's amazingly scientific yet addictingly interesting research, and Rich Z's awe inspiring photos.

Oh man, cornsnakekid's trolling! "I lost my 500g BP.. ok, no I found him he was in a TP roll"

Lots of great memories over the years.. this site has changed so much over the years. Despite people's coming and goings (and those who hang on tight. :) ), there's always SOMETHING pulling me back to CS.com.

Thanks Rich for making and keeping in line (somehow) this amazing site!!

:dancer: CS.COMER FOR LIFE!!

I agree that TheSource is not as user friendly, BUT, I do appreciate that when you post on their site, you don't have to worry about every post turning into a debate or argument. People can get mad if they want for what I am about to say, but their site seems a bit more "mature". It just doesn't seem to be as "cliquish" of a site. Usually at The Source you don't have people that have never hatched a snake telling others with absolute certainty how they should do everything when it comes to corn snakes. People with real experience and knowledge are the ones who offer advice.

That said, I do also enjoy this site because it is more active, especially in regards to pictures and there are some colorful characters on here even if they annoy me a bit.

Just my thoughts.

You aren't referencing me are you? I really didn't mean to fall asleep in that tanning booth!

More weirdness.....LOL.....but wonderfully worded.
I am glad I got banned too :)
Never would have the friends I do otherwise :)
And.....even more.
Bethany, I can't imagine you banned any more than Kathy.

Jessica, LOL,....I repped you and dc.

I haven't ignored this thread until now, honest. I have only been trying to jump-start the brain cell that remembers 2002...with only semi-success. Like the others, I started on KS.com, but since I didn't post much, I managed to dodge the knife. When Rich started Fauna, I joined soon after that and did the same here at CS.com. I basically never went back to KS.com (hate the style of forum anyway) and actually had to recently join again as I (and my computer) had forgotten my user name and password there.

I remember quite fondly the hours in chat with everyone. I still have my cheat sheet with everyone's user name and real name as it does take me quite a long time to remember associations like that.

Then that fateful night happened. I wasn't on that evening but heard all about it later. CS.com was never the same again. I am a member of both sites, and do miss some of the corn snake discussions that you can now only get over there. I also don't care for some of the arguments that have happened on this site. But Camby, to be honest, that other site appears to be more mature, less cliquish, and have less arguments because those not in their clique and that argue/debate with them or their clique have been known to get banned and all their posts completely deleted.

As for noobs giving out their "expert" advice, etc, just compare the total membership of 1.177, active membership of 247 and 55 members having been on in the past 24 hours of that site to the 19,710 total membership of this site, 435 members having been on in the past 24 hours and we don't even list the "active" members. Fewer members = fewer posts, especially when it's only those more experienced members replying to any new members questions.
