What plans have you made for your snakes if ...

... something happens to you? Like a sudden death?

I was having supper with some neighbor's earlier this week and they mentioned that they did not have any emergency contact info for me (the wife works in a hospital, so she thinks about this kind of stuff. Plus we were talking about death, funerals, burials. You know, normal supper conversation.) and also asked who they should contact about my dogs. This got me thinking about my corns. None of my neighbors know I have them. I'm single and don't know anyone local who is into reptiles.

What arrangements have you made for your snakes/pets/feeders etc.? It is not like a dog or cat or two. I'm just curious what arrangements you've made, if any.

The closest person I know with corns is Jen of Ghosthousecorns. She is a good hour's drive away from me.

I've tried to plan ahead, but decent reptile rescues are few and far between. Every time I decide on one which I'd trust, it closes down. The nearest I can do is leave a stipulation in my will that my Corns be given to my local reptile shop (any which they want, that is). I know that they will make sure that my animals go to good owners and I don't mind that they'll be sold rather than rehomed.

However, I do have some "special needs" cases and I don't know that they'd be taken by the shop. Jonesy is 24, has cataracts, is a picky eater and is pretty cranky these days. Pumpkin has some spinal injuries which look absolutely catastrophic but which don't prevent him from leading a normal life. Lilah's had an operation to remove stuck eggs and I don't ever want her bred again.

I don't know anybody personally who keeps snakes.

In the state of Florida, to get a Class III Exhibition and Sale permit, you have to have an emergency contact person who would be able to care for your animals in the event of incapacitation, incarceration, or death. But Corey knows what to do, and would be able to care for them unless he doesn't want to, and then he can rehome them as he sees fit.

Luckily my boys have grown up over the last 7 years seeing the snakes grow from little worms to adults, helped with feeding and cleaning them out, know how they are kept.....so we have discussed what would happen. They have personal favourites they'd keep (and probably argue over) and would rehome or sell the others. My only stipulation is that Lil stays in the family. She's the only one of my snakes I can say I've got a real emotional attachment to and they agree she's got a home for life. After her shaky start and dramas in which they were involved, she's going nowhere!

I have a lot of herp friends. I'm sure they'd be picking though my racks like looters at a sneaker store. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I've got the names and numbers of a few close reptiles friends listed in my snake room, as well as making sure my immediate family knew who to call.

I'd imagine it would be similar to Chip's "looter" analogy! LOL!!!

I have casually chatted about this to friends (more as a joke, with mildly serious undertones) there are 2 local friends around here who are into corns, one of which is very into the animals in my collection and has more than once nudged the idea of collaborating, I imagine he would get first dibs if something happened to me. my frog would go to my little cousin, and my skinks probably to another local friend who is into the less "common" and very into geckos and skinks!

My dog would start WWIII haha, my grandmother, cousin, uncle's girlfriend, every co-worker and half of my EX Co-Workers, 2 ex bosses, boyfriend, best friend, omg the battle would rage on forever!

but come on... he is an epic dog...

I think I've told my mom that they would all go to the guy I bought my first corn snake from. And my responsible friends would be able to choose any that they want first. I think my mom would keep my ball python.. she loves him. I don't know about poor Dastan though. He'd have to be buried with me. lol

Some good ideas. Glad to hear it's being thought of. Still not sure what I'll do. There is a reptile store 30 miles away that does some rescue too, maybe they should get 2nd crack at them, after anyone here wanted them. I'd have to be sure someone could pack and ship them though.

Well I suppose my sister would rehome them. Or I could just give them all to people on here... OOO i know ill end up with 100+ snakes and send them ALL to pugsley xD

Thanks Michael! Here is a bouquet for you for thinking of me!

Like Robbie says, the state of Florida has the phone number for my emergency contact person, although I'm sure my snakes would be long dead before they ever figured out I had died or that they needed to contact anyone!

I have my emergency snake contact person's phone number stuck to my refrigerator, on a large sign. That person lives a couple hours away, and is familiar with my collection, and would be trusted to disperse them. I also have Rich's number as a back-up.

I think in choosing a person to care for or disperse one's collection, you have to take into consideration does that person have the financial resources to do that? I was forced to find a new emergency snake person this year when it became obvious that the previous person would not be in a financial position to care for an additional 80 snakes.

It's kind of scary, living alone, knowing I could drop dead and who would even know, or know what to do?? Rich- would you know how to get a hold of any of my friends to check on me? That's my biggest fear- I die and my animals starve before anyone does anything. I've told my work that if I ever just don't show up- something is drastically wrong and they should send my snake-sitter to check things out. (A funny thing happened a few years ago- closing a window, I managed to get fingers from BOTH hands stuck between two panes of glass. Like- REALLY stuck, not going to move without peeling the skin and flesh off, if even then!! Fortunately, I figured out to pull out on the glass and open up a gap, but it was scary being trapped like that for a few minutes, wondering if anyone would ever come looking for me!)

I have a local snake-sitter, but the best she can do is fill water bowls- she could never feed. I kind of wish I had a trusted friend in town who could step in and feed if necessary, say if I was hospitalized or something.

My snakes all have their ACR registrations attached to their bins, and of course their names written on the bins, so they can be sorted out and genetics not lost. The hatchlings are all labeled with their clutch numbers. My emergency person also knows which snakes are here on breeding loan and would be able to return them to their owners.

For the cats, we have an agreement with a rescue that states that if a couple of specific family members/friends do not wish to take them as permanent pets, that they'll go to the rescue, along with a % of the estate. I need to check with herp groups and find out if there's anyone who will let us set up a similar agreement for Wadjet, the frogs, and any other herps to be named later.

I've thought about this. I only have a few snakes, so I hope that my boyfriend would be willing to take them. I know my family would not want them. My younger sister might, but she's too young to care for them by herself.

I wish some of my coworkers were in to snakes and critters.

I know there are a couple of reptile rescues up in Salem, I can look up the contact info if you want.
Also Pugs have you joined Oregon Herpetological Society? Based in Eugene/ Springfield but you can be from anywhere in state and join. It is a good group of local reptile loving people that would be a resource if anything happened to me.

I haven't made any concrete plans (still live at home with no snakes-- not for much longer though, just got a full-time job woo!) but hopefully if I had an accident or something, any pets I had would be taken by my family and either cared for or found another home. My parents are not snake people at all. My sister doesn't mind them but I don't know if she'd want my hypothetical future snakes.

We discussed this last year after my heart attack..
There are 4 or 5 snakes that my daughter and wife would keep
but most would either given to local snake friends that would
want them or a friend with a pet store would sell them.
My wife and Daughter would keep the Cresties, the Savannah and Sulcata.
All 8 Tarantula's would be given away or sold.

Jeez... this has made me think.
I'm going through a divorce, so now I don't have anyone who is familiar with my snakes who could take them.

Maybe we should set up a more official web of support, just in case?
I would be comforted at least having someone who could be shipped my snakes in case of my demise.

We could do a 'if you will take mine, i will take yours" thing?
