Here in SC, There's been a statement on all the local news channels, and
news papers, and someones even posted the article on a Gamecock
message board I'm on, warning everyone there are a lot more sightings of
snakes this year than in the past because of the unusually warm winter
we had, the heavy rains at the end of winter and early spring, and now
the higher than normal temps and humidity for this time of year. They are
cautioning everyone to be careful outdoors, gardening and hiking and
going through a list of things to do should you get biten by a venomous
snake. . . . . . . Reason I'm asking this is because even though I'm hearing
this a lot in the past 3-4 weeks, and most of my friends are telling me
they're seeing snakes this year, I have yet to see live snakes other than the
one banded watersnake I encountered in Edisto last month. Have seen
3 or 4 DOR (which is about normal), but last year, I had seen about 4-5 lives
ones (Black Racers and one Copperhead) around this time of year, but so
far this year, Nothing !

Just wondering if you all have seen more / less than you normally do in your
areas so far this spring.
 
I haven't seen any brown anoles, just lots of green anoles. I wonder if they didn't survive the second coldest winter in recorded history.

Nearly every day someone tells me they have a snake in their yard. I've done one removal/relocation.

On the Florida Pigeon Rescue list, many people in Florida are experiencing loss of nestlings to snakes, including cornsnakes. I pretty much can't read anything on that list right now if I don't want to read about snake killing.

I saw my second wild corn ever this year.

I have more species of frogs in my yard than ever.

Seeing a lot more frogs for sure myslef. Not really different species, just
more numerous than before. I would guess this would mean that there are
a lot more snakes as well with the increase in food source, but I haven't
been lucky enough to stumble upon them when their out.

I've only seen one Wild Corn in my life . . . . it now resides in a modified
75 gallon aquarium in my den !

Well, it took longer into the summer to finally start seeing ANY snakes-even those DORs. Strangely enough, we used to see lots of kings, pines and rats on our property and this year we have only see two rats. We haven't even seen any venomous and we have a pond and a stream so we usually see TONS of water moccasins. Saw one copperhead in January when we were cleaning up around a fallen tree--that was a scary one! So basically I would say that we are not seeing anywhere near the normal amount.
 
Wow, I have seen/ caught more snakes than usual at the mouse shed door. 1 Timber, 4 gray rats, 1 corn all released or spooked back into the woods. I caught a baby eastern king in the garden in early spring and rescued the Large E. King (both released) from the neighbors dog. I have seen more DOR than normal, mostly gray rats and rattlesnakes with a few E kings thrown in the mix.

I would say we have had a good number of snakes on the move.

However I havent seen as many frogs this year. We did have a good month of no rain and real dry(no humidity) weather. hmm Intresting
 
tons of frogs in VA. hate to say it, but normally have seen many many many more roadkill snakes by this time of season. have seen ZERO live snakes. have saved two turtle road crossings when normally would have seen plenty more.
 
I live in the city, so I don't get much opportunity to see snakes in the wild. That said, it's been WAY wet and cool this Spring (much more so than usual), and I hear that it's not just the plants that aren't doing so well in it. I've heard hundreds of frogs in the neighboring ponds and in our courtyard where the little pond is, but I have yet to see a snake or any other reptile or amphibian.
 
I think they are more of them, or at least they're more active than
normal in this area, but I just haven't been lucky enough to see any
this year, and by now, I've usually been able to see a few live ones.
Everything I'm seeing this year (sadly) are DOR, and I'm seeing way
too many of those. Saw two more this morning on the way to work.
A large Black Rat Snake and an REALLY beautiful Garter Snake that was
freshly killed. That one really was sad to see. Most of the Garters I've
ever seen here are the normal Dark Green or Olive Color base with the
the yellow stripes. This one was the Checker Patterned type that I've never
seen around here (only in pictures, and usually taken in NC / Virginia).
Very pretty snake, that was trying to cross the road at the wrong time.

I took some pictures, but I don't have a SD card reader here at work.
 
I have seen one snake. He was chilling on the side of the road, I moved him off just in case someone decided that he would make a good target. I have pictures I will have to post when I get them off from my future mother-in-law's camera.
 
I haven't found near as many snakes this year as the previous few years. However, it has been a record cold spring and early summer in this area, and I'm fairly sure that has a lot to do with it.

I did find and photograph a few different lifers already this year, however, so I won't complain about quantity with quality that good...

I'll agree with that. I go out every weekend and I've been seeing and hearing more frogs than usual this year.
Turtles have been out and about like they always have in the places I go, the past three weeks the eastern snapping turtles have been moving around a lot.
Snakes came out early, then it got chilly again and I didn't see any for a bit. Not now though, for the past few weeks I haven't come back without snake pics.
Today:
painted turtle
bunch of sliders or something, too far away
eastern snapping turtle, 12"?
2 eastern mud turtles
5 northern water snakes
queen snake
Only a few frogs today, bullfrogs. I also heard bullfrogs all morning and didn't hear any others.
 
I've seen one black racer at work that has been wintering under the back door step and relocated it to my home property as it was freaking all the ophidiophobes. Already at home, I saw an adult eastern garter (probably the same adult as last year) and a nice adult coral snake up the road about half a mile. A few green anoles, various skinks and several Florida scrub lizards (my favorites) are typical findings around home as well. However, I haven't seen much in the way of frogs and toads yet this year, which is unusual.
 
I am just inland of Myrtle Beach, SC. We had the coldest winter I can remember in my lifetime with the coldest temperatures occurring late in the season. I work outdoors in prime snake habitat every day and see many snakes during the course of the spring, summer, and fall. I have seen fewer snakes this year than any year. Turtle numbers seem to be down significantly as well. Anoles are around, but also fewer in number. I have yet to see a live copperhead. I usually see several each week. I have seen one water moccasin (yesterday), one corn, four greenish rat snakes, a handful of black racers, and a few water snakes. We had some of our coldest weather during late February. This is when I typically start seeing black racers and spotted turtles. I still haven't seen a spotted turtle. Only the alligators seem to be present in their numbers from past years. One other observation worth mentioning is the lower number of nesting crows. I work in an area surrounded by wetlands, and we have lots of aquatic turtles. During the spring laying season many pairs of crows nest in the pine trees adjacent to the wetlands and ponds. They feast on the turtle eggs watching turtles leave the water for higher ground to lay. I have seen a drastic decrease in the number of turtles I see laying. There is also a decrease in the number of crows. I guess they know something.
 
Had a large group get together today and friends around Chesterfield VA an Amelia VA. They know I am into snakes, lizards, turtles and so on... so I asked, remembering this thread. Responses were sightings of 3 MUCH larger adult black rat snakes. Lots of frogs and a few lizards. Saved another box turtle today too, when I walked to the other side of the street and saw an obvious non survivor box turtle. Only thing can think is that because of the harsh winter maybe the younger ones didn't make it and only the more established adults did. How much you wanna bet we get an influx by end of summer?
 
FINALLY !

Saw my first live snake in the Columbia area this morning, but got so P/O'd
because I couldn't get a closer look at it. I saw it on the road trying to get
to safety, and I stopped the truck to try to get a picture and closer look.
It was near the edge of the road, so by the time I got out of my vehicle,
There was another car approching from the back, and the snake had already
made it to the grass on the side of the road.
All I could tell was that it was a dark snake (looked like a juevenile). Wasn't
moving like a Black Racer. Could have been any number of snakes, because
the sun was reflecting off of it, and I couldn't make out any details. . . .
anyway, I finally saw one that wasn't flattend and hope this is the first of
several sightings this year.
