DAYTONA 2010 OFFICIAL THREAD

LOL, No Beth, I'm taking 4 days and riding the Train home.
It's free and They don't check my carry ons. So as long as I
don't advertise they are there I'm good to go.

Gene, you are taking 4 days all together or it takes 4 days via train? Kind of curious how taking the train woud work out. How much does it cost?

It takes 4 days to get home due to the route the trains have to take..
Deland Fl to Was DC to Chicago to LA for me (Emeryville for you)
there are changes of trains in DC and CHI.
A low one way is $330, or can do a RT on the USA rail pass for $389.
(Coach fare.. Sleepers are 1st class so lots more)
In a hurry That isn't for you.. want to relax and enjoy the scenery..
Then that's the best way to do it.

If anyone wants to travel Amtrak and want to guarantee the lowest
rate, let me know.. I have connections.. LOL

Wow, suprising, that's more than my round trip plane ticket. Although I would love to do it some day. I would really love to drive it but I just can't afford to take that much time off work. One of these years....

I have taken the train several times from Savannah, Ga, to or from Sebring, Fl. It is only about 8 hours, and costs about $50 - $60 one way - much cheaper than the airline for a short trip. And so much more comfortable! The seats are bigger, with much more leg room. The aisles are much wider, the bathrooms bigger (than an airplane), and it is easier to get up and move around. It is very relaxing, and I read a lot. Not sure how I would like a coast to coast trip, but the short trip is great!

I took the train to Delray to visit my Parents. I was $50 round trip and much nicer than the 3.5 hour drive. I would do that again when I am not bringing my dogs.

Someday I would like to take the train or drive across the country. I have done a lot of train travel in Europe but never in the states.

Just one more train comment (sorry, O.T.)...

Some of the trains in Europe (and S. Korea, too) are AMAZING! We once took the train from Riga, Latvia (was a little beat up, but not bad) to Warsaw, Poland. From there, we got on a super duper, fast, modern train to Berlin. Way nicer than anything I have seen in the US! We also traveled to Seoul, S. Korea from a few hours south of there - also an amazing train! We did some extended train travel in Russia about the same time (mid '90s) and it wasn't nearly as nice, but not TOO bad (worse than US trains, though).

If the US had trains like the best foreign trains we traveled on, then people would use them just for rest and relaxation!

It's been done, Jeff!

I think pizza might be the least open to disappointment food choice. Even bad pizza is edible.

Well, it looks like their pizzas serve 2-4 people so we would need to get a bunch...I am thinking cheese, pepperoni, sausage and veggie lover's? Maybe see if we can do a "salad bar" or something along with it as well?

Ya, that is the only draw back, but maybe we can go even more simple and just get cheese and pepperoni. The more options there are, the harder it gets to guess. Then again, the other wonderful thing about pizza is people can pick off what they don't like if we run out of one kind. :) (And the veggie sounds really good!) I know, I'm no help at all.

Hmmmm, this may be something I could do---got a price on a train ride from zip code 39565 in Mississippi to Daytona? Leave MS on Friday and return on Monday. Appreciate it!

Pizza with salad bar sounds great!

If it is a GOOD salad bar, then those who don't want pizza (or are on a special diet) can make a big salad instead.

Katie, PM sent about booking a room. Anything settled on food? I also may have something to donate for the raffle...working on it (o:

Haha - you wouldn't eat pizza, would you, Rich? I remember when I first met you back in the '80s, Connie told me even then that you wouldn't eat anything if you can't see exactly what it is without moving stuff to find out!

If we go with Uno's, will they allow for some single orders for the 1 or 2 people in the world who don't like pizza or salads, lol?
