Well at 18 I had a rifle, for God's sakes, I had a tank... operating a fire-arm isn't very difficult and doesn't require a whole lot of preparation.
However, the ability to make thought through decisions does. When you have access to such an extreme instrument and are not ready to responsibly use it, it is best avoided.
At 18 in the army I firmly believe that people are NOT ready to own a weapon. There's training, sure. But quite honestly, at least in the IDF, where a commander is 19 years old, and an officer about the same or 20'ish... that's just too young to be put in those situations.
At any rate...
Nanci- I apologize, but I don't think weapons are a toy. The fact that there's a 12 year old kid shooting, to me, is quite horrible. It is irrelevant how mature or responsible kids seem, they are kids, and it is a fact that their ability to make decisions is undeveloped at that point and age.
Might as well let a 12 year old smoke drugs or drive a car.
Firearms are WEAPONS, with the sole purpose of maiming, incapacitating or killing- be it hunting, in self defense or in war. I do not see why on earth should the use of firearms be considered or even allowed to be "fun". I can't demand that people stop making a sport of it, naturally, but I can certainly say that exposing children to the point where they think their parents are "mean" because they don't allow them to own a fire-arm is absurd.
I have been shot at, and thankfully was never ordered to kill- but for God's sakes, I know perfectly well what are the capabilities of these "toys", and I want nothing to do with them. Should I own one, I pray to never have to even look at it.
