I'm no arachnophile, but I DO like jumping spiders. There's a mutual awareness there that can't be denied. Any animal that squares off against me, despite being .000005% of my mass, deserves my respect.

I would also like to add that the whole herp community is really that: a community. Herp people will bend over backwards to help you out, and you don't even have to ask for it. We're a tight-knit group, and at times, even like a family.

Totally agree!. It's the one interest that collects us, but there is definitely a well-knit group on here that creates an excellent environment. I appreciate people with unique interests, but it's SO nice to have a community that shares your unique interest.....Kind of funny, because being on here so much you tend to forget there even is a stigma attached to snakes. The box my brothers snake came in yesterday said "Harmless Reptile", so when the UPS driver delivers it he asks "So what kind of reptile is it?". My brother tells him it was a snake, and he laughs and say's to never tell the delivery men it's a snake in the box, because some won't drive the truck. Guess that's why they put "harmless reptile" lol...So close, yet so far!!.

Slightly off topic, but my favorite clients (residents at my halfway house) are the ones that need me the very least. The needy needy ones exhaust me in every kind of way. Ways I didn't believe existed. How did grown men "mature" to be so needy? When I die and go to Heaven (I hope there is still hope), I will never be asked a question again,...and I will never hear a phone ring again.

(Back on topic) Brutus does have his little things that test my patience. But he does love me,...I know that. At least....until I put breakfast down on the floor.
 
Snake people are 100% better than any other animal keeper. When 2012 rolls around one of us will rule the world!

I know Eric's original statement was in a different vain, but reading your interpretation of it led me to my response to your original question. Snake owners aren't bad, but Dog owners are better. You are tasked with turning that blank canvas into a masterpiece. Snakes is snakes.

Ditto, and it reminds me of the motorcycle community. Bikers are good people, always willing to drop their own project to help out another biker. At least in my area, a stranded biker is guaranteed not to be stranded for long before someone stops to help.

I don't know why such good people are drawn to those particular hobbies, but it's great to find such outstanding people anywhere, anytime.

Yep, Bikers arre some of the most genuine, friendly people I've ever met, just don't cross them.

ceduke, You have without a doubt the creepiest avatar I've ever seen online...it's like Chucky met Saw or something...can't you find a cute red puppy or even a Panda? lol
 
I have to say that the like in any group, you'll have better people, and worse.
As for snakes merely tolerating us... you know, I was a great advocate of that, but the more I deal with these fellas, the more I see that there's a genuine trust underneath it.
To be perfectly honest, we can't tell for sure what's going on in a snake's head- they are not expressive enough to be readable... but I do also know that keepers can "read" their snake's mood sometimes- I know that at least my boas tend to shift colors in accordance with how outgoing they feel at the moment- dark phase signaling that they just need some time on their own.

The more years pass... the chances rise that some form of evolution will occur within the population of captive bred snakes- as people will be more and more keen on getting calmer, more outgoing snakes.
Will they become more expressive some day? Who really knows?

Today though, yes, dogs definably show and express love far better.
 
I don't know, there's good and bad "snake people" just like any other group. While I think owning a pet might be a step in the right direction, the mere fact that someone owns a snake doesn't automatically make them a better person to me. It does give me at least one thing in common with them, and if I see they are taking good care of their animals that's another thing in their favor. But I don't appreciate those who might own reptiles but willfully cohab or breed them too young, or who contribute to herpers' bad name by allowing their large snakes to escape and end up plastered all over the news. It's not enough to be a pet owner, be a responsible one or don't be one at all.
 
I love my snakes. But I really love my cats. They make me laugh. I get more joy out of watching them and cuddling with them then I do the snakes.
That being said. I do enjoy interacting with the snakes also.
