Yes, I know exactly how you feel - I am torn both ways myself. But the big auction will raise far more money than we can, so it is a good idea. It is a shame it kind of "steals our thunder" a bit. But, OTOH, I have become increasingly resentful of any auctions to raise money for conservation groups (the usual beneficiaries in the past) when most of them voted against us on that big anti exotic bill a year or so ago. And virtually none of them would be willing to speak FOR us when we are attacked, and the target of more regs. While I think conservation efforts are important, we are in a fight for the continued existence of our hobby/industry. The humaniacs have put us in this life and death struggle, and most of the academics and conservation groups support them. So I think we have to do whatever we can to support the few groups who support us, in whatever way possible, even if it does make things a little less fun for us.
I know you feel the same way. I was mainly spouting off for anyone who might read it, and not think carefully about why we have to be happy for the auction that is somewhat cutting into our own plans, fun, and prestige of this event.
