Please tell me I'm not the only one who has almost blown up a mouse in the microwave!?

This is my first snake and my first time dealing with pinkies. I put one in the microwave for 30 and within 6 seconds I hear this POP. I screamed then shut it off. Haha. And started laughing so hard. I was scared to look in there and knew if it had exploded there was was no way I could tell my hubby. Haha but its belly just split which I guess my little girl liked.because she ate it after I gave her some privacy.

Oh and I knew it wasn't.going to take the full 30 I had just planned on watching it and stopping it when it looked hot.

You are not the only one!!! When I got my first corn snake the breeder gave me 12 frozen pinkies. I usually would let them thaw out while I was in class but I forgot one feeding day so I looked up on the internet how to quickly thaw out a frozen mouse... Obviously I got the "hot water" idea. However, somehow the "drop it in hot water" statement turned into "put it in water and heat it in the microwave" in my head. I put the frozen pinkie in a bowl of water and heated it for a minute... and I can tell you that was the NASTIEST thing in the world! It smelled like some kind of old chicken and it made me gag. I ended up going to my friend down the hall who had a corn snake too and asked her what to do and she told me to put it in ALREADY heated water. I was like... Duh... lol.

But anyway, on a side note, don't heat up your mice in the microwave because it can end up cooking parts of it. And no one wants a cooked mouse! haha.

That's a mess I would not want to clean up...
I've never used a microwave to thaw out mice. I run the tap water til it's pretty hot, fill a bowl, put the mice in, & wait.

On topic: Don't drop a hot mouse from anything higher than 20 cm, it wil turn itself inside out and you'll get a blood taste in your mouth uke01:

One night feeding snakes my husband was doing something, I don't remember what now, but I had no hot water. So I got the great idea to warm some water in the microwave then put the mouse in there. Well did you know that if you warm water in the microwave it does not always boil? Did not know this. I dropped the mouse in there it swelled up and turned brown and split. I said oh @#$% pulled the mouse out and it was literally cooked. I could have eaten it, it was that cooked.

Funny story, but cooked meat is not good for your snake. When meat is cooked, it is broken down, and loses nutritional value. A microwave to defrost mice is just a bad idea, IMHO.

Some of mine go for the hot soak in water mouses, others won't touch them and must have the microwaved ones. This usually changes within 18 months of hatching, and by 3 years old they could care less about food temperature. If you have microwave-pref-feeders, then experiment a bit. I figure out how long it takes to pop a generalised size, and that goes to the kings or milks (garbage disposals), and then

If it takes 6 seconds to pop size, I wrap in a moist paper towel,
nuke it for 3 seconds, let it sit for 3-5 sencond, then nuke it for the other 2 or 3 seconds.

They don't pop then, and being wrapped in the paper towel they stay insulated back to the snake room.

But it makes the popcorn taste funny.

When I first started with snakes and I had Franco my sand boa BEFORE I knew he was male, I worked at Arby's. Well Arby's makes Ruebens. I LOVE Rueben sandwiches! They have them in corn beef and turkey. We had to mic the Rueben meat. I would NEVER eat the turkey variety because when it cam outta the microwave, it smelled like thawed mouse! EWWWWW! Gross!

Hahaha last two replies made me laugh. Thawed mice do have a extremely disgusting smell.

Considering I've boycotted ice because I swear it tastes funny since storing frozen mice in the freezer, I don't think I'd ever be able to use my microwave again :/

Ew...I've never considered thawing mice in the microwave. Wouldn't that cook them? 0-0

My hognose is an ongoing funny feeding story though. I swear, that snake has to be monitored constantly when feeding so she doesn't eat her own tail. Once she gets ahold of it she freaks out from the pain, but at the same time keeps clamping down harder onto her "prey".

Haha I was laughing about how on my frozen mice packaging it says "do not microwave" and I was like "ew! who would put a mouse in the microwave?!" HAHA I think I'd throw my microwave out if there had been a mouse cooked in it! Very funny story of yours

I know other people have replied about the mouse in a cup/bowl of warm/hot water. I have a designated "mouse" cup for thawing my snake's meals. It works very well. It unfreezes the mouse without cooking any of the meat (which I think cooked meat is harder for snakes to digest, but not sure)
