Chatty thread time!

This year I'm likely going to produce the most babies I ever have - and probably the most I will for quite some time. This is probably my last "free summer" for a long time so I figure I'd like to spend a chunk of it fiddling with and selling snakes ;)

So far I've got four clutches on the ground, with 25, 12, 35, and 28 eggs. Exactly 100! Three other clutches may or may not be on the way - I've got two first time ladies who I think are gravid but haven't laid yet, and one "proven breeder" female I got for this year who hasn't shown any interest in breeding yet :awcrap:
Two of my girls usually double-clutch, too, and will probably give me another 50 babies.

I know with the economy and all some folks are downsizing, but the reptile swaps around me have been doing quite well. Maybe with the economy people are saving money by buying directly from breeders rather than petshops? :)
Anyway, how many babies do you all expect this year?
 
Well, due to my inability to find a female for two of my males (I actually would have liked two females for each of them), I only have two pairs going this year.

First pair has been out of brumation for 2 1/2 months, but both have RIs (I'm not exactly a happy camper, but life goes on), so no eggies until they get better.

Second pair has been up for a month and mama is getting ready to shed. She usually lays small clutches, so I'm only expecting about 10-12 from her, most likely with no double clutch (she hasn't ever double clutched).

So, if all goes well, I'm hoping for around 40-50 babies (if the first pair gets healthy soon and gives me a good first and decent second clutch).

Next year, I'll have 12 or 13 clutches to prove out some genes, but then I'm going to settle in to 5 or 6 per year for awhile.

For me this year I had plans to breed about 30 females total. To date about 18 corns have bred at least once, along with 2 kings (finally!!). I have Texas that have shown no interest or left no marks, along with some Hypo Bulls where he is all gung ho but the female keeps saying NO!!. They have all been out of brumation since 2-14. Most have shed at least once, some twice and a couple are currently on their 3rd shed cycle. This is my first year to breed anything other than corns so I am excited on that point. I also have 15 first year females and 5 first year males breeding this year. Based on past records nothing is behaving normally with the corns this year but I am not taking that as a bad sign.
As for the economy, reptiles sales in my area are booming. Shows are seeing record numbers of people attending for this time of year. I think the fact that reptiles are easy to house as compared to a dog or cat, and again in comparison low maintenance, the popularity is greatly increasing.
 
Oh Hallie, sorry to hear about the RI that sucks :( Good luck, I hope they recover quickly and give you some nice clutches!

DragonBoy - it's exciting to try new species, isn't it? This is the first year I'm trying to breed my Kenyan Sand Boa. Or rather, I had a male with her years ago but he never showed any interest; now I have a new male who's big enough, and he's definitely courting her! Perhaps I will also have a litter of spotty land sharks in a few months.

I sold some stuff at my local pet/exotics show two weeks ago after not attending since December. I was ~amazed~ at how much the show had grown. Apparently the show right before the one I went to had been much bigger, even! They're looking into getting a bigger location, which is good, because it was getting a little too crowded for my tastes :p
 
I should have 3 clutches of corns this year but next year if all the female around the 100g mark at the moment get up to size i could have 12 clutches it think. Possibly some carpet python stuff as well next year!
 
To be honest, I have no idea. I have one clutch from 8 eggs, 2 to 4 first time females and a female who laid 14 eggs (with 4 slugs) last year (and gained another 100 grams to almost 500 grams now) but she shows no interest yet.

If I get an average of 15 eggs per female, I will be very pleased. So I guess that I will have 45 - 75 eggs.

4 or 5 pairings, lord knows how many eggs or hatchlings. I'm giving three proven females a year off. Instead I am breeding a couple of first timer females so maybe they will have small clutches...Shooting for not more than 100. I don't even incubate the second clutches when/ if I get them anymore. I kinda get frazzled by having a whole bunch of hatchlings, there is a limit to how many I can take care of without feeling like part of a snake production assembly line and my life is already dictated by the snake schedule enough. When they are good eaters it's easier but I always seem to get a few I need to tease feed.
 
So far I have 4 confirmed pairings with the first female getting ready to drop in the next week or so.
I have 4 or 5 (at least) potential other pairings that I have not been able to confirm yet - and this is just corns.

I am also hoping for two clutches of grayband kingsnakes this year.
 
Thought I would jump in on this chatty one...LOL.

We are looking at 17 female corns plus a boa or two, a Cali King pairing, MBKs, Emoryis, Creamsicles, Spotted Pythons, and Grey Rats.

Our White Oak Grey Rat has already laid her clutch of 12 eggs and I have no plans on doubling her. This was her first year. The Yellow Rats just dont seem interested this year. Our corns average 15 eggs per clutch. This has been the average for us the last three years. So if we are lucky enough to have all the corns drop 15 eggs, that makes it 255 corn babies. Now we do have the others and they are all single pairings, so that could be what?? More than I really want to think about. :crazy01:

As for the economy, it all depends on what is being sold. We do deal directly with a locally owned small pet store chain. They are not looking to carry "high end" morphs. They are a good place for us to sell the basic morphs. The higher end morphs are usually purchased one way or another regardless of the economy. If you know what you are looking for or want/need for breeding or projects, where do you go? Not the local pet store. We vend at a few shows each year and we sell via the internet as well. I have noticed that if people come to buy, they will. They are, of course, usually looking for the best price. Which is not always getting the best animal. As most of us probably are very aware of. I agree with DragonBoy, reptiles are becoming very popular as pets for several reasons.

I am truely hoping only 50 babies this year.. It'll be my luck there will be giant clutches though and end up with a 100 again..

So far I have 17 corns and 2 kings that are gravid. There are still 5 females left that seem to be taking their time. There are 2 females that have already laid their eggs for a total of 24. I'm guessing I should get around 200 eggs this year. At the moment there are 11 females that have already had the pre-lay shed blue phase so they will be shedding any time now. I know they are plotting to all day on the same day just to drive me nuts. :crazy01:
 
Between 100-150 for me this season, I have some that will double clutch included. First eggs should be in the moss this week :cheers:

wow, i have just under 100 from 8 females.. you did well there with those big clutches.
i am done for now.. but have a few others that should lay in the next month or so..
already this is my biggest amount, but with the females left, i feel 150 is a good figure to hope for.. although it very possible to get a few more.
 
I should have 2 corn pairings, MAYBE 3 (if a certain someone gets up to size in the near future), 1 BP clutch, and a litter of Dumerils.
Last year, I only had 1 corn clutch (19), and only 4 hatched out, so I'm looking for a lot more babies this year. I consider last year my test run. I screwed up everything I possibly could, even after reading Kathy's book and a few other breeders sheets/recommendations.
 
Just one clutch this summer. They just hooked up last night. Crossing fingers on a healthy clutch. This is my first attempt at breeding.
 
I have two first time females that bred a couple weeks ago and I may try to get a few more clutches in this year. I want a clutch of hybrids, so I may stop with just three clutches. I don't want to over burden myself with hatchlings. My goal is to produce only a few clutches a year anyway.
 
80-90 for me, from five females. Might be more if I get double-clutching from one or two. GoldDust Motleys ahoy!

Hey Angela! Congrats and good luck :D

I've got about 10 or so females I'm going to breed this year. Most average 12 or so eggs and a few will double clutch.

It's so much fun! I love this time of year.....:D
