Interest in locality corns.

The debates and interest with hybrids and morphs has me curious as to how many keepers are working with or are interested in locale specific corns. This is a part of the hobby I would be extremely interested in and I'm sure some others will as well.
Please note I'm not starting this thread to debate pure vs hybrid or morphs etc. just to see who else shares this interest. Some of the morphs are incredible, don't get me wrong, but I have a great interest in keeping and observing animals that exhibit natural variation.
Maybe this could be a new venture for some keepers who may be becoming bored with their current projects?

Please message me if this is something you'd rather not discus openly.

I'm quite interested in localities - I think especially the corns with coloured saddles on grey backgrounds are stunning. I don't have any "proven" localities myself, although my Saphira does display the grey background. I'd have nothing against working with localitie tho :D

I had a pair of REALLY cool locality cornsnakes- the Boot Keys. John Finsterwald has them now. Hopefully he will breed them- they are gorgeous!!

I had a breeding pair of locality Okeetees, the couple years I had babies for sale interest was minimal. I really like the locality stuff.

I still have a couple locality (real) Okeetees, but I haven't bred my last w/c female in about 5 years. I like the locality stuff, but found there was limited interest in my babies after I did it a few years.

We are especially interested in the Alabama locality corns. The ones in our region exhibit a smaller size and different coloration pattern than those in North Alabama (Auburn University has done some preliminary genetic studies and so far shown that there is no genetic differences in the localities in Alabama). We think normals are some of the most beautiful corns out there and exhibit a wide variety of phenotypes (colorations) in the wild. We do agree with everyone above - there seems to be minimal interest in "normal" hatchlings from localities - ours do not achieve the typical colorations seen in the wild until about 1-2 years old unless they are outcrossed with another morph.

I had a neat Marathon locality pair, sold it a few years ago to a finish breeder.

This is my Saphira. I bought her as a normal without any further specification towards locality or anything, yet she doesn't have the typical carolina look. I know I can't call her a locality, but I have to say I love her looks, they're nothing like what I expected when I bought her! :D

I like some of the miami local snakes I have seen with reddish and grey coloring and I would love to see some more pictures of those working with this local alone with nothing else added. Just to see what is possible with a single local.... I applaud your desire to work within a local for sure. I'm not sure I've seen any Alabama local corns though so I really can't say whether I like them or not.

I'm glad to see that others are interested as well. As I've said in other posts I've always had a collection of milks and kings but over the past year I've added some corns to my collection. I really like corns, they are awesome snakes, but the morph thing never really appealed to me, and strangely I'm kind of put off by red-eyed snakes (just a weird preference). So now I'm thinking that locality corns would be a very satisfying way of adding some great snakes to my collection.
For those of you with locales, how far removed are they from the wild? (F?)

I have one of Nanci's 2012 Miami corns...INCREDIBLE. Maybe she can enlighten us on the origins of her stock. I'll try to get an updated picture up this evening after work.

Nanci's Miamis are from Low belly Reptiles. They can trace their Miami progenitors a couple generations back or more. I'm pretty sure the first one shares a relative or two with Nanci's Miamis. :)

I would love to get into Alabama Localities, and now that I see those Marathons I would like those as well. The babies almost look like there is some diffused in the mix. Very pretty snakes.

Excellent pictures, this is exactly what I'm interested in as well. I understand that many people choose corns as first snakes and I can see why a morph would be chosen over a normal locale snake, but man, those are awesome.

I love when morphs are found in the wild. Things that you never would think could survive into adulthood, like the palmetto...

I was working with the Alabama locality for a short time, Buzzard now has my Alabama snakes. Mica, the first one I got, was wc four years before I got her & she was gravid when caught, & Silber, one of her offspring, is captive hatched from that clutch.

I couldn't think of anyone better to continue my Alabama projects than Buzzard & Jamie.

Edit to add: The Alabama locality is hands down, my favorite, & I look forward to seeing what Buzz & Jamie produce with them, down the road.

Two of the females that we have in our collection (Mica from Dekalb Co. and Seriously the one in the posted photo from Pike Co.) are wild caught. Our original Pike Co. locale snake came to us gravid (a similar situation with Mica) so the hatchling pictured is an F1 from the wild caught female. We held back a pair from the wild caught gravid female and that pair had a clutch this past year, unfortunately none of them made it but they were similar in coloration and pattern to the hatchling picture posted. We did an outcross project with the original wild caught female from Pike Co. to an Amel stripe in 2011 and held back a pair of those (one is pictured in the post) to see what the hatchlings will look like from them. Heather did an outcrossing with Mica, the Dekalb Co. female with a tessera and we have one of those which we will be using for a project again this year. There are pictures of all of them under "Alabama Morph Project" on our iherp page (link below).

Buzz, that is incorrect. Mica's spacific locale is Madison Co. The guy I purchased her from caught her in the Huntsville area. Just didn't want you to have the wrong info on her buddy.
