MY MOUSE HAD BABIES!! (Pics)

My mouse had babies!!!! 11-13 of them infact, can't get a perfect count right now because I don't want to disturb her or them.
My plans are to get 5 out when they look about 3 grams, to freeze for Crush, my Amel. Corn.
Let the rest grow to hoppers which is what my BP is on...at that point I will take a male/female pair out to keep and breed, and freeze the rest as hoppers for my BP.
Once I have a decent frozen supply for myself, a local pet shop has set up a deal to buy my spares from me:)

they look lovely I hope the hoppers arent as cute as the mum or you may have probs killing them off lol

It is good when you can work deals with a local pet shop. I have a deal where I trade my extra mice for mouse food and shavings. So basically the mice pay to keep themselves up.

She is cute and those babies look all warm and snuggly, but snakes gotta eat to I guess and it must be nice to provide your own food. I have been considering doing this but wonder if I can or if I would chicken out and keep them all, lol!

I've debated the idea, too. I'm afraid all of my mice would end up as pets, like the ones I have now. I've kept 2 or 3 mice in my classroom for years, and the students love them. They also love the corns in the class. Buying frozen mice is one thing; I'm afraid I'd seriously freak out some students if I fed one of the pets to another.....

It's not easy, There are some mice I have become partial to. When they are pinkies it is easier to cull them out, because you can't tell what color they are(I have some fancy mice). But I have to think of them as cattle. I know it sounds cruel but if I don't, the house would be full of baby mice....

I know what you mean Buzzard...my male is very cute...Black head/white body/black butt...we call him Double-Stuffed...like the Orea...haha...I could never feed off my two breeders cause they are cute...but the pinkies are much much easier...now I just have to let the other 6 grow to hoppers and put them down and freeze them for my BP...that might be a little harder...but like you, I have come to think of them as "cattle"...my 3 yr old doesn't even call them mice, just calls them "Snake-food"...lol

That mamma IS very cute. In a way, I wish I could obtain that mind-set (mice as cattle) but I can't. I've tried for a long time. I don't even kill spiders, I carry them outside to let them go. Ever see that kids movie, "Bee Movie" the best line in it, is when the woman stops her boyfriend from killing the bee and says, "You don't know what they are capable of thinking." so true. Yet, it's the cycle of nature and I fully accept it, I just won't take any part of it.

That is your right...everyone does things differently...

I have seen that movie, it's great..maybe when a mouse sues for mistreatment I'll stop freazing them

-Josh :)

yes in the end you have to start looking at them as food and not pets as you will end up over run, this is what has happened to me once i started getting different coloured mice instead of standard white ones.

At the moment I have stopped all breeding whilst I dwindle down my freezer and fresh stock.

Try starting off as a rodent breeder before you get snakes. My wifey raises all different kinds of rodents for show and sale. She gets all different colors and coat patterns. She would get upset when I would have to pick through her stock to find feeders, so she gave me a bunch to start breeding as feeders.

It's tough using them for food because they look so cute, but they look even better going down!! LOL!

Those are some pretty mice you have there, Josh!

Yes, Wayne, I know what you mean. I've never bred rodents commercially, but I got my first pet mouse in 3rd grade. Since 1998 I've always had mice as classroom pets, among my other critters. I've been blessed with having corn snakes for only a year.

We used to raise a few cows for beef. I've even killed and cleaned chickens that I raised (the smell was really GROSS when I was pregnant, lol). I do view mice as food for the snakes, and I think I might even be able to feed mice from my collection. I'm fairly sure, however, that an outcry would be raised by someone at school that would result in no more snakes in my classroom. I'll stick to petting the mice, and buying frozen for my snakes. I enjoy having both species around, and my students benefit from the ones I keep at school.

I personally let my colony grow to a nice size. past 12 mice or so, let them breed and then start culling the F2 babies.

what's the fastest way of killing the pinkies at home? I'm thinking about going out and buying some breeders but I can't act on the idea unless I can be sure I won't feel guilty afterward...=.<
I read somewhere about poking the back of their necks with a needle? has anyone heard of this method?
