Please Think Twice-Egg Binding

For all that want the adventure of breeding your favorite corns, incubating and raising hatchlings, please think twice. It can all go terribly wrong as with my Striped Fire girl. I don't want to loose her but fear I will, she laid one egg and wouldn't lay anymore. I am very lucky to have a friend that is a retired zoo vet and he came over and we got three more eggs out. Then what we feared the most a fold in the lining was blocking the rest of the eggs. We have pushed the rest of the eggs back up hoping that when she sheds that the fold will straighten out and she will expel the rest of the eggs.

I hope she makes it, John. This is definitely something to consider when new people want to breed a beloved female just for fun.

Yikes! So sorry to hear that! This is one of my biggest fears. Though I'm new to corns, I've had iguanas over the years and know the dangers of egg binding. I'd like to have a bunch of corns, but no desire to breed with this being the biggest reason!!! I hope she's ok and is able to expel them. Please keep us posted!

Wow

Sorry to here that John,it happens no matter how good of a cornsnake breeder you are. So hopefully that dont get you down.I had 1.1 Hypo Lavender Stripes I grew out for 3 years, they cost $4k as babys, not to mention three years later that the female died eggbound the first breeding, a couple months later the male died. I get really emotional over seeing it because I know the female is suffering.I once had a really bad case which the eggs were all bunched up close to the back of the vent. I could tell she was hurting and I cried.I called my reptile vet that I am friends with he he drove out,she still didnt make it and she had to get euthanized. That one had me upset for a long time. I was about to give the whole hobby up then, especially since I recieved the animal in a trade from a known breeder as a proven breeding female.. I hope your girl makes it.

Have you considered aspirating the eggs, make 'em narrower so they might be able to pass easier?

Oh John, I wish there was something I could do to comfort you. I know this kind of thing happens to anyone, but it seems like if karma had anything to do with it, it's the last thing you deserve.

I will keep you and your girl in my thoughts and prayers (when I get around to saying them), and ask that the man who I consider so generous and kind heated receives the same kind of blessings he gives.

Keep us posted John, good luck.

Oh poor baby. I am so sorry that you have to go through this. I really hope that she is able to get them out.

Sorry to hear that, I had my first egg binding experience two years ago, luckily it wasn't as serious as yours. Hopefully she will be OK.

Exactly what I was thinking. I keep 10cc syringes and 16guage needles on hand just in case.

Sean (VMS) was here the day before yesterday and pushed them way up with hopes that (she is going to shed today or tomorrow) she can get them moving and getting the kink out. If she can't then we are going to aspirate but if that fold is still there and we have to aspirate each egg instead of just the blocker egg, that's 10 eggs and might be asking for infection.
I've been exercising her everyday to get those muscles moving and hoped during or after the shed mother nature would help. Cause we all know Murphy is no help!
Thanks all for your kind words and help
John

If you use alcohol swabs, work in a fairly clean area, and then let her heal on news print or some other medium that the injection site wouldn't come in contact with, I imagine she might be OK.

Regardless, hopefully waiting it out will do the trick - hoping for the best for you!

My fingers are crossed that this ends well. I had two become egg bound last year, one required surgery, but both pulled through. I hope your girl works this out on her own.

Oh John, this makes my heart hurt!!
Have you considered swimming her in a warm bathtub? I had to do it once when one of mine was eggbound and it helped. I would leave her in for 20 minutes to a half hour at a time twice a week. I used an aquarium thermometer so the water wouldn't be too hot.

Sorry to hear that also John! I think I remember reading that Calcium injections can help, but if there is a fold maybe that won't help? I hope all works out ok.

Oh no, John! That isn't good news. I'm always terrified of egg binding when I breed my girls. I hope the fold works itself out and she can pass the rest of the eggs!

John that is very sad news indeed, I know I was very scared for my girl last year when she became egg bound and had not even been bred. She ended up requiring surgery and has recovered excellently. In fact she started ovulating again this spring, so I opted to breed her with the hopes that she would do better with fertile eggs.

Please let us know how things play out, you and her will both be in my prayers!!
