Razzle: Hypolav Stripe / Double Regurge Survivor!!

Nanci

Alien Lover
Way back in January, two of my snakes regurged. It was one of the coldest nights ever. They were on the same thermostat, in vivs right next to each other. Razzle had gone from a medium pink to a larger pink. Not a big increase; certainly nothing that would have made me worry. I was a little concerned to have two in one night, but the high/low recordings of the thermometer and thermostat revealed nothing suspicious. Okay- a regurge isn't pleasant, and it _is_ worrying, but I can handle it. Wait the ten days, tube in Nutribac, feed a pink half...And then Razzle regurged again. I was filled with dread. I completely freaked out. I bawled my eyes out. To lose this snake would be devastating; he was a Rich Z retirement snake- nothing that I could have normally afforded. I was heartbroken. I contacted the only person I knew who I thought _might_ have a replacement, just in case, and Stephen Wagner reassured me and said he could probably part with a keeper, if need be. Stephen- I might have died if you hadn't said that. The prospect of losing this precious baby, as well as my dream project, was just too, too sad. I thank you, Stephen. And then a couple days later, my good friend John Finsterwald called to say he'd been offered a hypolav stripe male in trade, and while not something he would normally be interested in, did I want him to get it for me? You know what- the people here are amazing, and they take care of each other. Thank you John, for a reassuring offer at my lowest point. Just having these two "insurance policies" in place made me feel like all was not really lost.

The days dragged on. I tubed Nutribac every other day for another ten days. I was so scared to feed Razzle again. I ground up a pink by running it through the food processor, and then through a garlic press. This did not work well, but I had some sort of mouse//guts/juice. I tubed a ml of this into him. It stayed down. More Nutribac, and a small pink head five days later. It stayed down. Then a large pink head, then the front half of a pink, then the rear half, then two halves of a pink. Razzle's weight finally started going up instead of down. Then he refused a meal! Oh no! Five days later Razzle was obviously blue, but I'd already thawed and cut his mouse with two deep slits so it was virtually three thirds, but still his first whole pink since January, and he gulped it right down. And it stayed down, and last night he shed, and today I took him out for a quick celebratory photo shoot!

Thank you, you guys, for the offers of replacements, and for moral support. Here we are, two months later, and my boy is making up for lost time!

Razzle is getting lighter with each shed! He's still only about 13 grams, having lost a couple months of growth.

What a wonderful story, gives me a bolster or hope that my lil one will be ok. She regurged almost a month ago now. Held down a head, just got the second 1/3 of the pink. So far so good. She is holding her weight at 11 grams. I take that as a good sign. Its only 1 gram down from when I got her about 2 months ago.

Very pretty. I've got a Lav Stripe that might be Hypo as well, not sure.

It's great that people were supportive and willing to help find a replacement, thankfully you didn't need it!

Nanci, I almost cried just reading your thread. I completely felt your concern and pain. I, too, love the pink ones and have been working to produce a hypo lavenders and lavender stripes to have such a project of hypo lavender stripes along with my poss hypo avalanche stripes.

I am soo happy for you and your lil guy. He looks great! And you are right, the people here are amazing, and they do take care of each other!

All my best,
PJ

Thanks you guys! I tell you what, I am learning some harsh lessons this year. Snakes can and will be mis-sexed. Not all snakes make it to breeding age. Have back-ups, if you can't bear to have a project fall apart. Hopefully that's enough lessons for this year!

5 Month Update!

Razzle graduated to fuzzies today! He weighed in at 24 grams. And even more importantly, he ate, by himself, in his feeding container! Razzle has been hand-fed since his regurge, because he just was not a fan of pinks cut in pieces, or pinks covered with Nutribac, or double pinks. (Normally any snake I have fed parts to has treated it like a gourmet meal!) It was just easier to hold him and pop mice pieces into his mouth one after another. And he isn't a strike-feeder; he likes to smell, think about it, smell some more, think, leisurely open his mouth and start in. So I was thrilled when I put his Nutribac-covered fuzzy in his deli cup and he ate it right away! Without even being covered up!! What a good boy.

YAY! :) glad all is well! had a scare with my pewter a while back. it certainly is relief when they bounce back and with a vengeance!

Nanci, that is one of the most heart-felt, heartwarming tales I have heard in a long, long time. Congrats to you and your Razzle for making it this far! Baby steps and lots of nurturing seems to be doing the trick :). May he grow large, strong and healthy, and provide you with many pretty babies with your chosen snake-mamas.

And then you can send one my way, 'cause that has got to be one of the most gorgeous pink snakes I've seen!
