Saturday Morning at the Tying Bench

[Insert Witty Commentary]
10 years ago, I was an avid fly fisherman, and pretty darn good fly tier(hence the nickname). 8 years ago, my baby girl was born. When her mother and I split up and I got full custody, I went from fishing about 320 days a year or more, to zero. Tying stopped, fishing stopped...but the passion didn't fade.

Fast forward, my daughter turned 8 this year. She is now old enough to come along if she likes or stay with her mom if that's her choice, but it's high-time Daddy got back to the water.

So I spent some time tying up my favorite fall-season dry flies for the East Side...

I'm pretty happy with the way these turned out. Hopefully the local wild trout will be, too. Thanks for looking!

I had taken up fly tying for a while until two boxers decided to devestate my tying bench while I napped on the couch. And I woke up to scraps of whiting hackle, dog poop and carnage all over my house. Never was very good but got a real thrill out of the few good looking flies I did tie.

What a cool pastime. I live in the Appalachian mountains but I will NOT go near fly fishing. I was a fishing addict as a kid, and still am weak when it comes to avoiding letting my hobbies consume me. But those are awesome, and I could totally see how you'd get hooked, so to speak.

You do a nicer job than I used to. My dad always had an issue of Fly Fisherman around when I was growing up and we fished together since I was three. I was tying flies...or attempting to by about age 11 or so. Some of them weren't half bad. Dad has alzheimer's now so his fishing days are over, but at some point I'm going to pull out his old fly rod and hit the water myself. Thanks for bringing back some great memories for me!

Thanks everyone! I had to work all day today, but I'm going out tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, I don't have a camera I bring to the creek with me...

Robbie, I LOVE my 105mm macro lens! :D

That's AWESOME! I'm really hoping to get a nice DSLR sometime in the future, but at the moment, I've got a couple debts to pay off before that time comes.

Great flies (and photos)!

I've always wanted to get into fly fishing (and tying). Right now I'm working at a friends fishing tackle/hunting shop, so I have access to just about everything I'd need to go. I just need to learn how to actually do it.

Fortunately the owner is going to be doing some fly fishing/tying courses as we get more into the fall. And I'm definitely sitting in for them. It just seems like such a fun and challenging way to fish. I just hope that I can manage doing it.
