Why I hurt today?

whippet

Tara
Over the past few weeks I have been struggling with a broken tooth...and today they took all four wisdom teeth. I opted for the general knockout...so I was not aware they were even done. Boy I am now! My face is half numb...half hurting, and I am not too happy with life. Anyway for gross points...here are the trouble makers!

You can see why I am a hurting puppy today...
So please....tell me your wisdom teeth horror stories and tell me I will feel better soon!

Hey Tara, that’s nothing. I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out when I was in college. Back then things were a lot different than they are now. My wife went with me to the barber. He gave me a bottle of laudanum to drink. That is the worst stuff you can imagine. I started to hallucinate. I tried to kiss the barber. Well that’s a different story.

Anyway, Fred, the barber called a couple of guys from the blacksmith shop and they got me in the chair. One sat on me while the other held my head. (I think I tried to kiss him too) I remember how big the pliers looked. But the next thing I knew my wife had me at home and I was drooling all over myself.

Aww, Tara! You poor thing!

Just follow the post-op directions to the letter. The only thing worse than having them taken out would be dry sockets. I had one (out of the four) and it was the most intense pain ever. Other than that, they healed pretty quickly.

(hey, disregard the previous PM I just sent you. If you can just send me the name and location, I can look them up and call for the records for violet. Thanks! )

When I had my wisdom teeth removed I found out I was allergic to the pain meds they gave me but thankfully I did not have much pain at all and even went on vacation a few days after.

My boyfriend on the other hand was a huge baby. He was is a lot of pain and I had to force him to eat soup because he didn't want to eat or drink. The meds they gave him made him very loopy too. He was in pain for about a week and stayed in bed the whole time.

That broken tooth looked very painful, hope you feel better soon.

Wow Tara, you poor thing.....

I have no horrible wisdom tooth stories to tell you, but I do hope you feel better soon....

Ouch, that broken one looks like trouble!

I had mine surgically removed before they were even fully out because they didn't want them to mess up all the work the orthodontist did. I was out the whole time because they had to dig them out. However, I ended up having 5 wisdom teeth. The upper right side had a second tooth right above the first one. When they pulled that one out, it left a hole in my sinus. So my sinus was open to my mouth. I could not eat solid food or suck liquid in anyway. I pretty much looked like "the beast" on Beauty and the Beast trying to eat soup for a month. My best friend also brought me a huge bottle of red hots (my favorite at the time) that I pretty much just stared at the whole month. :crazy01:

At least then I was 15 and didn't have to worry about the bill. Nowadays that's just as painfull.

I was 15 when I had mine removed too. Again, can't be messing up all the ortho work! I was knocked out for it so didn't feel anything until I got home. A couple hours later I was vomiting blood everywhere! Mom got panicky and called the surgeon and he said it was fine because I bled a lot and probably swallowed quite a bit of it(found out years later the reason I bled a lot was because I have a bleeding disorder!). The only other problem I had from them was bone chips. Had quite a few of those left in there and boy did they hurt like hell when they worked up to the surface!

Oh omg! I am so sorry. The pain you must be in :(

I've never experienced it, but my sister lived off of milkshakes and icees and slurpees when she did, so that's my only suggestion.

Here's a wisdom tooth story for you.

I had no insurance when I wanted to have mine out. The bottom ones were fully out of the gum, and the top ones were halfway out, but the back half was still covered in gums. Every now and then the gums would get really infected to the point that I couldn't close my mouth all the way because the bottom teeth would press against my gums before the teeth met. I'd suffer, cutting up food really small for a while, and then scrape enough cash together to go to the dentist. Of course the dentist would give me painkillers and antibiotics and tell me to come back when the infection was down. And everytime, I wouldn't come back cause the pain was gone, lol.
I did that probably three times over a few years and then finally followed through and had them out.
I didn't have enough cash for general anaesthetic, so I just had the shots. When they were getting ready to pull, the dentist touched my lip and asked if it was numb. Well, it was kinda prickly, so I said, "Yep". They pulled the first one and I totally felt it, and just about shouted.
They left and gave me time to get numb. The rest of the experience was pretty uneventfull. Till I got home and my beagle ate my teeth. I tried to take them from him but he ran off with them and crunched them up really fast so I wouldn't be able to get them.

It's so nice to have them out!

I had 2 of mine removed when I was 16. The other 2 are still there...20 years later.

I didn't have the "knockout" gas...they used standard novacaine. And it didn't work. I didn't feel pain at the site of the teeth, but I could feel this crazy, intense pressure in my jaw from the doctor wrenching on the teeth with a pair of pliers. And I could hear the teeth cracking. And I could hear the horrifying sound opf the dentist cutting through the gums around the root of the tooth. Yes...it is horrifying to hear someone cutting away inside your mouth. It sorta sounds like when you try to saw through the grisle of a low-end steak with a dull steak knife at a bargain steakhouse.

Anyhow...wisdom teeth extractions suck. I never had the other two removed. The dentist said with the 2 on the right gone, the two on the left would have enough room to come in. So far...no issues on the left side...

You know, I still have all my wisdom teeth and they are still slowly growing in.. They annoy me sometimes, but most of the time are no problem.. As a teenager when the said they needed to remove them, I wouldn't let them because I couldn't see a purpose for them to have to take them out. I always did question everyones motives lol..

Chris, I had a similar experience when I was younger, probably around 10 or so.. The dentist wanted to remove one of my molars because it was a baby tooth and the newer ones where coming in or something, I dont remember.. BUT, even though the area was numbed, I could feel everything.. It sucked, and I still remember the feeling of it to this day..

I feel your pain. I had mine removed, partway through Basic Training. While going through my medical eval, when I first arrived at Ft. Sill, they set up my appointment. Three weeks into training, they sent me down in the morning for the extractions and two hours after they were pulled, I was back with my squad, dressed in full MOP gear and walking in that little room, where they subject you to the CS Gas. Just in case you don't know, the CS gas is the mock nerve gas, that causes you pain, to vomit, cough up both lungs and it burns. I could barely talk already and before you can leave the room, you had to give your full name, DOB and Serial Number. Oh, that day sucked!!

Wayne that's a nightmare. At least I got to stay in bed a couple days.
I remember the CS gas by the way. I can just picture myself flapping my arms and puking, with snot hanging down to my belt lol.
I probably would have quit right then if I'd just had my teeth out.

Ugh...you poor people. This is making me feel slightly better. Mine were all fully up. There was no damage done to surrounding area and I slept though the horror. I do have insurence and it covered all but 550 bucks.

Wade, this thread is for stories about teeth pulling... not your wedding. ;)

Oh no, the wedding didn't involve laudanum, it was a tequila night. Very painful as I remember.

Man guys I was 15 too and all four of mine were impacted and dug out with me only getting novacain. The next day I awoke vommiting and puked for three days- stomach flu. Of course I pulled out my stitches and had to go back but was lucky I had no bruising and mild pain.

I have no horror stories about removal because I still have my wisdom teeth. My horror story is that I need them removed but I can't afford it! My bottom left wisdom tooth was half covered with gums for a long time and when the gums finally receeded, I discovered the tooth was rotting out. For a while it was just a really bad cavity and I figured I could just deal with it until I got a job that offered affordable dental (what was I thinking?).

Well, about six months ago, I was chewing up something, don't remember what, when it suddenly felt as though someone had stabbed me in the mouth! Something chunched into another tooth and I promptly spit out whatever I was eating, along with a good amount of blood. I had broken off part of the tooth! Cracked off in a perfect little square right down to the gums. That hurt like a son of a gun! And every time I moved my tongue, I would cut it on the sharp, newly broken section of tooth. Pain in the butt!

That tooth is still there, breaking off little by little and I know eventually I will end up being a drooling mess in so much pain I won't be able to talk or eat or anything, but there is not much I can do as I cannot afford to have anything done. I can't even afford the payment plans one office can set up for me.

Guess what the first thing I'm going to do when my book is a best seller is? To heck with the new car. I'll have plenty of time to get a new house. Disney Land? That can wait too. I'm going to the freakin' dentist's!!
