Nanci,

I am pleased to inform you that the package you have recently sent to the Fedex Package Testing Lab has passed. The package meets all our guidelines and cleared all our tests. I have attached your current test report which includes pictures and our complete evaluation of your package. Because this is a package containing live harmless reptiles, you must get in contact with your FedEx sales rep (Chris B. Collins) for further legal business. If you have any questions or comments feel free to contact me.

(I sent it in Monday!! That was fast! I wish I knew how to get the pictures off their PDF to include them!!)

Yikes! They drop it 30". compress it with 411 pounds, and shake it for 60 minutes!!!

I will be!! Here are the pics they took: I sent it exactly as if I had a snake in it, invoice and everything.

Luckily, I remembered on the way there that I had NOT taped the deli cup shut! I fixed that. I was going to do it right after I put the fake snake in there, and forgot!!

And within minutes of contacting my rep with the results: (I guess I got one of the good ones!!!)

Hi Nanci,

How are you today?

I just submitted a request to our legal dept for the "libility waiver"
paperwork you need in order to ship live harmless reptiles. As soon as
I receive it I will forward to you.

Have a great weekend!

Nanci,
I wish I knew how to get the pictures off their PDF to include them!!

Just do a screen capture.
When the pic is in view, press the "Print Screen" key on your keyboard.
It prolly says PRNT SCRN or PRT SCN- it's usually somewhere in the top right corner of your keyboard.

Then open "Paint" ( Start > Accessories > Paint )
Click Edit > Paste

Save it as a JPG...

Thanks Dave! That's what I do when I pay bills on line, instead of printing it all out.

CONGRATS!!!

You have probably already heard this, but BE SURE to keep all of the info FedEx sends you, as they have been known to lose EVERYTHING on occasion. That would mean you would have to start all over again if you don't have it in your possession. You might want to even carry it with you when you ship, at least for a while.

I try to mark my packages' contents with fairly small writing in regular pen, so it is inconspicuous. It is really better not to attract their attention, even if you are totally "legal", in my experience. I write it as "1 corn" on one side of the box, and then write the Latin name on the other side of the box, so they are likely to only see 1 thing at a time. I figure they are way too busy to scrutinize it and try to figure it out. Much better that they just treat it like every other package, and I rely on my packing methods to protect it from abuse, rather than some snake hater giving it "special" treatment. Recently, I even started putting the info on the bottom of the printed label, that is folded over in the clear label holder. The more "normal" the package looks, the better, in my opinion.

Good luck on your shipments!

Really, all you HAVE TO write on the outside of the box is Wildlife. All other information may be placed inside the package.

(1)(i) Conspicuously marking the outside of each container or package containing fish or wildlife with the word “fish” or “wildlife” as appropriate for its contents, or with the common name of its contents by species, and

(ii) Including an invoice, packing list, bill of lading, or similar document to accompany the shipment which accurately states the name and address of the shipper and consignee, states the total number of packages or containers in the shipment, and for each species in the shipment specifies:

(A) The common name that identifies the species (examples include: Chinook (or king) salmon; bluefin tuna; and whitetail deer) and whether or not the listed species is venomous; and

(B) The number of that species (or other appropriate measure of quantity such as gross or net weight).

The invoice, packing list, bill of lading, or equivalent document must be securely attached to the outside of one container or package in the shipment or otherwise physically accompany the shipment in a manner which makes it readily accessible for inspection;

I'm going to make labels of my own- I'm just not sure what they are going to say, yet. Probably something to the effect of Live Harmless Wildlife and something about temperatures and do not place in sun, something like that. And my Fed Ex number. And maybe my phone number.

So far it hasn't been too bad.

1. Applied for account on-line. This involved giving them a credit card number, and them charging me _I think_ $10. This took less than one day.

2. They gave me the name of my account rep. I got through to his voice mail.

3. Account rep called me on my home phone, of course when I wasn't home, but he left his e-mail address and direct phone number. This took a couple days.

4. I e-mailed back, saying who I was, and what I was up to.

5. I looked at the instructions on the Fed Ex site for shipping reptiles, and copied their directions with my test package exactly. I printed out the test package form and sent it off. The person at the test package phone number told me to send it "Charge to recepient" and that there was no account number. The Fed Ex hub thought there should be an account number, but they took it anyway.

6. The test package passed, and the testing center e-mailed me the results. I sent it on Monday, I had the results Friday.

7. I contacted my rep with the results, and he has contacted the legal department, and that is as far as I am. That happened within an hour.
