Kind of Corny
I’m just curious if anyone out there really likes corn snakes that are mean? Perhaps because they have more personality.... present a challenge to you.... keep your pesky relatives away, etc. I personally don’t tend to like the mean ones as much and would guess that most other people would feel the same way.

So, here is my situation: Last year I hatched a ghost corn that is very mean and pretty much strikes and bites me every time I handle him. I thought with time and more handling that his mean attitude would go away, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I have had numerous people see his picture on my website and express interest in purchasing him, but I feel obligated to tell prospective buyers about his personality issues… and always lose the sale!

Customer service is important to me, and I don’t want to sell anyone a snake they aren’t going to like. I have pretty much come to the realization that I am not going to be able to sell this little guy due to his attitude. Perhaps if he were a rare, high-end morph people would be more willing to put up with the mean temperament, but he is just a ghost. Anyway, at this point I am totally willing to give this little guy away for free (for cost of shipping) if anyone out there is interested in taming the beast.

I’m curious to hear your thoughts on mean corn snakes and whether you guys would buy one if you knew ahead of time that it was going to have a mean temperament?

I would have no problem getting a "mean" snake, but I already have a couple of mean ones so one more would not be a big deal. They are hard to sell, but I too would feel a need to let a prospective buyer know about the temperament. I'm sure for free someone will want him. He sure is pretty, and you can't beat that price.

I already have Attitude, who hasn't tamed down a bit since arrival last fall. Doesn't bother me any. Attitude has a home here for the rest of his or her life, unless something dreadful happens to me that would prevent me from caring for ANY of my pets (like death or becoming paralyzed, I mean). I bought Attitude knowing that s/he was a bitey snake, although I hoped s/he would improve. So yeah, I would buy a mean corn snake under some circumstances, since I already did.

Edit: I am probably crazy but Doc, formerly of PJC, will probably be living with me for a while (breeding loan) and he is known to be crazy.

I voted yes, my "mean" girl Pink is one of my faves. It's not like they hurt when they bite.

Now, if it was a retic...

I don't think very many stay truly "mean" into adulthood. If it was a baby- who cares. If it was an adult- if I really, really wanted the genes, then yes. If it was meant to be my beloved pet and co-TV watcher, no. Some snakes just don't enjoy human interaction.

Would anyone want to buy this snake?

I certainly would.

Would anyone want to buy this snake?

Why, is it for sale? :roflmao:

A mean corn? I don't think there is such a thing.
I'd buy it. I have no problem with "mean" rat snakes, they are usually the best feeders. Besides, the meanest corn snake pales in comparison to a Gopher or Beauty snake. Now those have attitude!

I have Green Tree Pythons and Amazon Tree Boas and Taiwan Beauties. Corn snakes have no idea what the word mean means. I buy snakes that I like. If they bite me from time to time, that is their nature. Sometimes I bite them.

Once I have money set aside (for food, emergency vet fund, etc. . .) I would love to adopt another pain-in-the-a$$ cornsnake that needs a home. My current one is an uncooperative, stargazing, pinheaded mutant that I can't trust for a second not to bolt on me, so a bitey one would be no problem at all. And my girl is calming down in her third year ( a bit. Maybe.) I don't mind disabled animals either, so I will likely either take an "unwanted" with personality problems or a rescue when I get a second corn.

Nah. I don't have any problems with being bitten or anything. In fact, I don't mind it at all. But as pets, I don't even keep snakes that won't relax when you handle them. I just don't enjoy them as much. I like the snakes for the breeding and morphs, but I also just like to hold them. I'm a very tactile person. For me it's just not enjoyable to own an animal that isn't also enjoyable during handling. I don't enjoy cats that won't let you pick them up, and I don't enjoy snakes that won't calm down when you're holding them.

I said no but there may be a circumstance where I would buy one. I don't like to say absolutely one way or another, since something unforeseen might come up. However for the most part the answer would be No. I have a male Puget sound garter that musks & bites every time he is held, he's just over a year old. Now to give you perspective, I wear a size 2 ring on my pinky finger & his head is a bit smaller than the tip of my pinky. So it doesn't hurt one bit when he's doing it but I don't enjoy having to handle him at all. So while I'll be keeping him, I'd probably never get another snake that I knew was going to act like that. Mine are pets first, breeders second & I like to be able to handle my pets.

How weird that I stumble across this post tonight. Early today, I went into the petstore I work at and purposely bought the "mean" cornsnake we have. Pretty sure it is a boy(havent checked yet) and it is just an amel (but a pretty one). However I knew that If i did not buy him (and i got him 50% off, plus a few other discounts yay) that no-one ever would and he would not be able to get the handling he needs up there, even though I am the reptile person, with all the other stuff I have to do, I just dont have time to sit and hold him.

Now that he is home, I was able to pick him up, hold him, transfer him to my husband, and then put him back in his tank ( i was re-arranging) without a single strike, hiss, bite, or tail rattle. I was impressed. he did try to eat me while I was holding him, but he is about 4-5 months old at the most so he is still small enough he isnt a bother lol.

I would love to see him calm down, but if he doesnt I will keep him until I can either no longer care for him (disaster) or he passes away. He will always have a safe home, who is willing to work around his "problems" lol.

So yes, in the right circumstance I would buy a mean cornsnake!

It's funny to see this post. I just bought a snake about a little over two weeks ago and so far she strikes me and rattles her tail when she knows I'm around. Hopefully things will change. Cause as a pet only snake owner, no I wouldn't purposefully buy a mean pet. But then I know people who will only go for a "challenging " pet

Good thing they're coldblooded and don't need rabies shots :).

I want to buy that snake lol. Very beautiful Blood Red.

I for one would not mind a mean snake. I would not be buying it cause it was mean. But first off a mean snake (or as some would say snake with character) take really cool pics. Second if the genes are good or say put together well or say big price tag and I can get it at a discount cause it is mean. Well I am ok with that. From what I have seen aggression is not hereditary.

BTW- I wouldn't associate tail-rattling with being "mean." Nearly all my snakes tail-rattle. They are just commenting on being disturbed in their vivs, or warning me to keep away from their feeding bins, etc.

In '05 I bought a gopher juvenile male which had been brought back by customers twice already because he is 'mean'. He was way gorgeous and offered at half the price. Since I already had a couple of cuddly snakes, I did not mind leaving this one is his viv just to look at :)

And indeed, corns are less impressive then gophers when it comes to attitude, but I do have one male adult corn that will most of the time if he is awake defend his viv like there is no tomorrow. He does not try to attck me though through the glass the moment he sees me, like my gopher does sometimes. So, buying a corn snake with attitude if he like him for other reasons? Certainly!
