"You lie!" - Disrespect or expression of an opinion?

By the reaction of the House members, it seems to me that Joe Wilson R-(SC) was disrespectful to the president. Now there are rumors he is being pressured to resign his position.

Wasn't NEARLY as bad as the boos and the catcalls from the Democrats during one of Bush's addresses. Reporters even said things like how this behavior had "never been seen before." I guess that was different, though. The Democrats did it then, so it was OK and warranted!

Yeah, but didn't they all and self-described "Family values", married, Mike Duvall, Republican mistress's spanking legislator book a condo in Brazil for their annual 'Summer Break' retreat?

Don't get me started on another scandal involving a hypocrite Republican...
But in Brazil all would be fine (personal experience :) )

That is strange that there is so much talk about his resignation. I certainly think his outburst shows a lack of character, but to end his career over this?

I think he ended his own career by being rude. I don't think he will get the boot (or boot himself out), but only not get re-elected for a seat. (Hurray!)

You'd be amazed... My guess is most people won't remember by the time his term comes around or won't even care to look. They'll see the "R" or "D" beside whoever they want to vote for and go for it... :poke:

Interesting how that works isn't it?!?!

disrespect? in the circumstances, yes.
expression of an opinion? yes

somethinng to have to resign over? nah.

He stepped out of line and realized it. It was a bonehead move that did nothing to help how he felt other than release some tension. - insert innuendo here - :nyah:

Should he resign? That's up to him and his state to determine. If they feel badly enough about it then they should write in and ask for it, if not, then he apparently didn't do as much harm to their rights as we all might think...

Chappaquiddick. :headbang:

Whats good for the goose is not good for the gander in this case.

While I tend to vote democrat, I agree completely with the hypocrisy. Rudeness is rudeness no matter what side and it's made me disgusted with politics all around.

No excuse for this behavior, from either side.
But then, respect for the office of President was pretty much eroded over the last 8 years by one party, so this guy probably felt like it was his turn now!

I think I already may have...go!

Seriously, political affiliations aside; Something I've noticed is that as soon as any political figure head (including pundits Read: Rush L.) affiliates themselves with some "moral" cause like anti-gay legislation, pro family values, anti-drug etc... and they take on this moralistic superiority, that is when they are actively breaking the exact same morale that they claim to espouse. There are numerous examples of this, too many to be coincidence IMHO.

That's why I've always put preachers, politicians, and used car salesmen in the same category. :D

You all may not be aware, although maybe so, that Swaggart has for several years now been back on the stage here in BR, weeping and raking in the bucks. He goes to town on this old standup piano, just like pre-ragtime in an old time brothel, unbeknownst of course to the majority of the audience who've never listened to a piano in an old timey rural southern juke joint.
Time heals all wounds, they say.........

If that is true (link?) than they should also be ashamed! I think most of the people on this thread would agree, although I still think his was pre-planned and not "spontaneous" which makes it much worse.
Also where did someone write that it was 'OK and warranted', do you have a link for that as well or is it conjecture?

OH and this might make you feel better:
During several moments in Obama's speech, members of the GOP hissed and yelled at the president as he laid out his plan for reform. One Republican wore a sign around his neck saying, "What bill?"
So he wasn't alone in his disrespect.

Looks like they've all joined in during the past:
"A lot of what went on [Wednesday] night has become fairly typical of what we've seen in the State of the Union messages over the last 10 or 12 years, where it's one side jumping up wildly and the other side sitting on their hands in stony silence."

Doubtful. This is from another thread.

politicians accomplishments said:
36 have been accused of spousal abuse

7 have been arrested for fraud

19 have been accused of writing bad checks

117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses

3 have done time for assault

71, repeat 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit

14 have been arrested on drug-related charges

8 have been arrested for shoplifting

21 currently are defendants in lawsuits, and

84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year
All of the sudden being rude seems the least of our worries. :shrugs:

For those that have forgotten. Shouting "You lie!" is worse than this?? Seriously?

Okay.

PS. This was a State of the Union Address.

I don't think anyone is breaking this down as a partisan disrespect. Even fellow republicans were hesitant to stand behind his outburst, and by all accounts disagreed with his actions.
I also am not one to blow this out of proportion, as I think this was nothing more than someone being a jack@$$. I don't think his career should be over because of it, and would harbor the same feelings had this been a democrat.

On a side note. I do believe Obama handled this situation with a level of "cool", and was quick to accept the apology given. Again, not political, I just think it showed good moral character for him to handle the situation in such a way.

I don't think anyone said it was worse, but for the record Yeah, I do think Joe Wilson's outburst was worse, He made an obvious spectacle of himself and didn't just boo, he actively accused the president of lying ( which he was completely wrong about anyway ). It was a premeditated publicity stunt (IMO) that backfired.

> If that is true (link?)

You are only 40,. Your memory shouldn't be that bad already....lol. It isn't hard to find if you really want to know about it.....but here is a taste.

TED KOPPEL (ABC host): When the president talked about the bankruptcy of Social Security, there were clearly some Democrats on the floor who thought that that was taking it too far. And they did something that, apparently, no one at this table has ever heard before. They booed. [ABC, Nightline, 2/2/05; Koppel's panel consisted of former Bush adviser Mary Matalin, former Reagan chief of staff Ken Duberstein, and former Clinton speechwriter Michael Waldman]

That was somewhat of a mistake. Republicans hissed at Clinton before that. Prior to that, I was really to young to remember it myself. This is NOT new no matter how much the media tries to make it sound as such.

> Also where did someone write that it was 'OK and warranted', do you have a link for that as well or is it conjecture?

I said it. The link was the one you replied to. It's how it always looks to me. ...like Uncle Ted's seat and how Democrats try to change the laws every other day (it seems) when the new law would help THEM. ...like Uncle Ted's seat.....lol.

In my opinion, Obama-the-person deserves as much respect as he gives to the constitution drafted by our forefathers - NOT MUCH!

Anyone else catch in his speech to the kids where he said he couldn't "go to school with the AMERICAN kids?" Anyone else catch that slip of the tongue where he pretty much admits he doesn't consider himself an American?

For those that have forgotten. Shouting "You lie!" is worse than this?? Seriously?

That's BUSH'S fault, too. Republicans are the ones hissing, booing, and catcalling PRETENDING to be democrats to make them look bad. Everything is fake, and everything is Bush's fault. Afterall, Gore really was born in the log cabin he built with his two hands right before building the internet and inventing global warming.
