Are more than half of corn snake keepers women?

I've notice that a lot of corn snake keepers are women as opposed to boas and pythons which seems to be a hobby dominated by men. If this is true, why is that? Why are women more interested in corns than any other species of snakes?

It's because there fairly easy to care for so that they don't cut too much into their household chores. Lol JK :p
I would have to agree with BooBoo18, but also add the fac that maybe there more popular with the women because they don't get as big as boas and allow for more to be kept. It is for those reasons and more that I like corns too. I do also like boas and would like to have ONE or TWO at most! I also like Garters, have had garters in the past. Pythons though seem to interest me the least.

But I'm a man, what do i know :D

Know this doesn't apply for some women, but I prefer smaller snakes, or smaller bodied snakes as they are easier for me to handle. At 5' 5" and 110 I don't have any desire to wrestle with a 30 plus pound snake on a permanent basis and I find even adult BPs to be a bit heavy for my tastes. Plus I just like the looks of the thinner bodied snakes best. But my husband on the other hand, is more attracted to the short, fat snakes, especially in hots.

I would say that there's a couple of reasons why (or more). For starters, they're easier to handle than most Boas and Pythons. And men are typically more able to physically manage keeping larger species. Of course there are exceptions, such as women who are perfectly able to handle such species, or men (such as myself) who have a definite limit to the physical ability required to manage larger animals. And secondly (to be perfectly honest), I think there's an aspect of snake/reptile keeping that's driven a lot by ego, and I've found that (in general) women aren't driven by the same macho, "bad ass", egotistical attitude of keeping animals that men sometimes are. I'm just speaking from experience, but I've always had much better dealings when talking with women who keep reptiles, as opposed to men. The discussions tend to lean towards the care of the animal, the beauty of the animal, etc... whereas men (typically) seem to be more concerned with the volume of snakes they keep, the size of the snakes (compensating maybe? lol), and the rarity of the species. And I would say that (from what I've seen) women appreciate Corn Snakes for their diversity and calm demeanor, instead of being bored by them not being 'impressive' to show off.

Again, this is just my .02. I know that there are plenty of exceptions, but for the most part I believe this to be true.

Funny you mention that, when I picked up my Creamsicle from a breeder. I was a little beside myself when I noticed he was a very nice looking middle aged man with such a nice house. I have never answered an Ad before, especially for snakes, so I envisioned him to be this creepy dude with the house of Buffalo Bill. Anyways, I asked him if more women or men have answered his ad on Craigslist for the snakes. His reply was women, he then proceeded to say if he knew this a years ago he would've been doing it earlier then when he started! Haha!

Interesting you should say that. I answered an ad a long time ago for a zebra rug. Real. The guy's house was BEYOND creepy, and I got a very scary vibe from him, and couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Oh wow!!! Freaking creepy!!!! Well just to be on the safe side I brought a friend with me and made sure someone knew where we were going just in case...it's a scary thing and glad you made it out ok!!

I agree with everything said so far about size, manageability, macho factor, etc. I would go even further about the huge variety comment, though.

I have always been drawn to snakes because of their beauty and graceful movements. In addition, I have been especially drawn to corns, eyelash vipers, and Amazon tree boas because of their wide variety of beautiful colors and patterns, and being able to breed them fulfills a creative need almost like using an artist's palette (the closest I will ever get to being an artist, lol!).

I think a lot more women than men probably feel the same attraction to corns, and for the same reasons, as I do.

Agreed!! I was never a fan of snakes until I bought a baby for a friend of mine! Then I had to have one because it was too cute. Then when I did research it opened up a whole new can of worms for me!!! Snakes are beautiful and just amazing. I think if I was introduced younger, and didn't have parents who thought snakes were evil, I would've started earlier!!!

I...
I just like corn snakes. They are pretty, small, and nice and docile, easy feeders...

I have other snakes too, and in truth I think my boa is my favorite, but I could never see myself having a hobby with boas. I LOVE Dastan to death, but he is truly my favorite pet snake. I love the size of him and his calm, curious nature. I love my BP, milk, corns, and hognose all the same. But BPs and Hogs are expensive, and the milks (IMO) are only pretty in the normal varieties, not morphs. Corns are always pretty :D

i enjoy the smallness of corns, and all the different morphs. as a female, i MUCH prefer snakes to shoes and handbags lol...definitely not a "girly girl" here. i do like corns, but also BPs. anything bigger than that i just like to look at :)

I agree with what most of the others have said.

I like all the colors. I like the docile nature. I like to take my "kids" out and do not care to be bitten all the time just for gently holding my pets. I like that corns do not get too big or heavy. I don't want to own any snake that will get too big for me to safely handle by myself. You never know what might happen or when, I could uncoil the largest corn in the house if I had too. Did I mention all the pretty colors and patterns?

Okay I'm gonna be the oddball, As much as I love my corns and I'm still interested in breeding a few just as a hobby, I am absolutely enamored with my Dumerils boa, in fact I just got a 4 week old female today that I'm hoping will grow up to be a good mate for my boy and have a litter or two. We also have a little red tail. I think the main reason I love them though is that they are big enough and, I don't know if I'd call it slow, but they are not as "whippy" as corns and are great companions. They aren't interested in exploring or escaping, I get my big guy out when I come come from work sometimes and I want to relax I flop myself down on the bed for a movie or some game time (yes I'm a gamer girl :p) and he'll find a nice spot to semi stretch and lay there with me, usually with his head resting on my arm if I'm laying down or... and if I didn't already know he's a boy, he loves to rest his head on my boobs. He did scare me one day though, I was sitting next to him on my bed with my laptop and just happened to look over at him and he's sitting there facing me in a gaping yawn, I'm ashamed to admit I may have made a little exclamation for just a second as I wasn't expecting a gaping maw beside me. He sat there with that big yawn for a couple more seconds then slowly slowly closed his mouth and looked at me like "what's your problem?"

I like my little snakes, not just corns though. In fact I like some of the other species better than corns. I like my Rosy male because he's got the super calm and slow moving nature of some of the bigger boas and pythons. He's a great tv watching buddy but he's a very nice and manageable 20 inches give or take. And the little tricolor Hognose is similar, along with the Western hog won't get even as big as the corns but have personalities that I love.

I'm a male, but don't consider myself particularly macho. I keep corns because of all the variety (there's a morph for everyone!), their temperament, and ease of care. If I want a difficult reptile, that's what my frilled is for. I would love to get a big monitor or tegu at some point though, something my partner rolls his eyes at and goes "men." :nope:

I'm female.

When I joined this forum, I was surprised at the number of women who love snakes. I grew up in a household that was afraid of snakes, so I didn't get one until I was an adult and a corn snake seemed like the obvious first choice. All of my female coworkers do not like snakes (or are terrified of them). I do have an interest in other species too, but I wouldn't want anything that was going to get huge and cost a lot of money in housing and feeding.

Also, I like snakes that look like they're smiling. :)

Can't say for sure, since I like boas and pythons as well as corns. I'm going to agree with Michael823's answer, because it's the most flattering :)

I don't like defining women as "girly" or "not girly", I know I have a long list of hobbies & interests that fall into either category (as do some men!). I think if I were to get another snake (and keep in mind this opinion changes every year or so) I'd get a hog nose. Most cutie pie snake ever. I'd put his viv on top of my BCI's enclosure, heh.

im a male and i have had pythons and boas along with many others but i perfer corns. and i have 2 other buddies who have corns and perfer them . we r all middle aged men in good to great shape but im the ugly one in the group. i dont think im scary.
