Around Christmas, we added a new kitten to our brood. Wasn't planning on getting another cat but that was just the way it happened. One of our clients found two kittens in the alleyway and was feeding them but she was allergic to cats. So, a co-worker took the one and I got the other. They look nothing alike. I named my kitten, "Captain Jack Sparrow". And as you can see, he's adorable! But he had a huge problem with the runs so I decided to make him another barn cat. We just now got the problem with his gut fixed and he's starting to grow normally. Apparently he had a raging case of coccidia that was very hard to find. All I can say is that Albon is a wonderful drug!

Anyway, he's cute as a button but I despair of him ever being a good hunter because he talks too much! One of his parents must have been a siamese! He loves people and tries to go home with anybody. He's also completely fearless. The other two barn cats HATE him but he pounces on them and tries to play anyway. I just caught my one tortie barn cat actually instigating play with him this morning so I THINK they're getting over it.

He's tough to get a good pic of because, being a kitten, there's always so much to do. But I think I finally got a couple good ones here. I LOVE his speckles in a tabby pattern.

Devon

I love Captain Jack's mustache and beard! I've never seen a cat with that type of markings around the mouth. All the bearded cats I've ever seen were black and white.

Again, you asked for it :). Here are my birds:

First, Mikey Blue. He's a Hyacinth Macaw:

stunningmikey_a.jpg

Here's Arthur, a Greenwing Macaw:

Bob, my Blue and Gold Macaw, is best buds with Arthur:

Three Scarlet Macaws.

First, Rowan. She's the sweetheart of the bunch, and her personality is much less nippy and more laid back than most of her species:

ro_home2a.jpg

This is Stewie. Isn't he a beauty? He was a gift:

newguy3a.jpg

And here's Ceilidh (pronounced KAY-lee) Ceilidh Mama's Boy :):

cpreenred1a.jpg

I also have 4 hybrid macaws. The first three are Camelots (3/4 Scarlet x 1/4 Blue and Gold)--second generation hybrids.

Yellow dominant Camelot Macaw, Patrick. He loves the Mama :). Check out that long tail:

Red dominant Camelot Macaw, Kenobi:

This handsome red dominant boy is Sean. He is Kenobi's brother from another clutch:

My other hybrid is The Incomparable Bowie, who is a yellow dominant Capri Macaw. That makes him 7/8ths Scarlet Macaw and 1/8th Blue and Gold Macaw. He is a 3rd generation hybrid.

These last 2 birds belong to Z.

Severe Macaw, Eddie, aka Jasper:

And last, but certainly not least, is Z's darling McKenna. She is a Blue Front Amazon:

So that's it! Until recently, we also had 2 conures--a Sun Conure (Petey McSweet), and his buddy, Mango, a Jenday Conure. We gave them to a lady we know who desperately wanted some parrot friends, and didn't mind that those two could peel paint with their screeches! LOL!

Mrs.Z - how do you keep up with so many large parrots? :p

Aren't the costs and the attention requirements outrageous? :D You have a beyond stunning fid collection... but I call myself crazy for wanting a single amazon. Oyy more power to you for being able to do it! LOL :)

I have had parrots for the last 15 years, minus the last two years. I have seriously missed it. I did rescue, rehab most of the time with some personal pets. I love you guys! They are seriously beautiful, especially the hy! Beautiful!!!!

Irish, I love Mikey Blue!!

I love Mikey Blue, too :). He was a (VERY expensive) birthday gift from Z a few years ago. He's a nice boy, but easily frightened.

The birds are expensive and time-consuming to maintain. Just their seed and nut "basic" mix runs us $500/month, and that doesn't include the fresh food.

Calift, it CAN be easier to have multiple macaws in some ways, because they are very much flock animals, and don't tend to get over-bonded to their humans or prone to neurotic behaviors when they have at least one other macaw to hang with. Because we have a good-sized flock, they don't need hours and hours of daily attention from us. They entertain each other pretty well when we aren't entertaining them. It's fun to hear the conversations (in English) they have amongst themselves! So, basically, we handle them enough to keep them tame, but we don't feel like we have to devote 12 hours a day to keeping them engaged.

Their bird room is the biggest bedroom in the house. Having all of their cages in the same room makes feeding and cleaning a lot easier. Still, there are times when it can get a bit overwhelming, which is why I recently rehomed the conures, and will probably rehome a couple of the macaws over the next few months. It's hard to even think of, because I love them so very much. My snakes are SO much easier to care for than those party-animal/drama queen macaws! LOL!

I had two CAGs that would carry on conversations, in my voice, with each other. They would bark, meow, ring like the telephone, beep like the microwave, laugh in my voice, etc.

When I was in Iraq my family would call me and hold the phone up to their ear and I would talk to them and they would look at the phone strange but say "Love you mama". My family said it was strange not having me there but hearing my voice coming from the other room, my laugh.

I have many many animals but I thought I would post my favorite picture.

The rat gang:
RattyBanner-1.jpg

Lucy, Nick, Briar, Autumn and Willow are all related. Lucy is mom and the rest are her babies. I have no idea how old mom is but I would guess still under a year. The babies are 3 months and one week old. Remus is a rescue (kinda) from a pet store. I did pay for him but he was 50% off because they couldn't sell him (he had been there for months). Linnea and Gwyneira I just got this week from a couple who had a baby and no longer had the time to care for them.

Then we have a big ol' gang of jewel cichlids and two electric blue jack dempsey cichlids in two separate fish tanks and some breeder mice.

They have conversations in English? About what? That'd be really cool.

Well, they use words and phrases they have learned from us or each other, and you can tell that they understand meanings because they'll use unrelated words in context and their talks make sense.

One example:

Bob says to Arthur (he pronounces Arthur as "Arter"): Arter!
Arthur: What?
Bob: Hi Arter!
Arthur: Hiyas.
Bob: Arter!
Arthur: What?
Bob: Step Up.
Arthur: No WAY!

Or, Patrick will say to Bob: "Big Wings (a thing I taught them to do so that they open their wings wide on request)".
Bob does "big wings".
Both of them yell, "Goooood BOY"!
McKenna (a female BFA), yells out, "Gooooood GIRL!"

You get the idea :).

Nikko and Bella used to talk back and forth like that. Nikko used to like to toss his plastic ball down on to Bella from the top of the cage and I would hear Bella tell him "No, Nikko be nice!" and he would laugh. Nikko would make the ding of the microwave and Bella would yell "Yummy! Gimme a bite". One would make the ring of the phone and you would hear them talk back and forth "Hello, whatcha doing, yep, nope, ok bye bye, love you" and would make kissy noises. The would call the dogs or yell "here kitty kitty kitty" and watch them come running and laugh. They were the welcoming committee when someone would walk in the front door they would greet them with "Hello, take off your shoes, thank you" then yell "Mama come see". When I would leave they would say "Bye babies" and make kissy sounds because thats what I did before walking out the door and tell them to be good.

I bet that is a hoot to listen to, probably not all the time though. My cockatiel will do something similar, that I'm told he's not supposed to do, that only the parrots are supposed to do. We taught him "Big kiss" where my brother and I would say the words, then my mom would make a big long drawn out smooching sound. If you tell him "Big kiss!" he will do the smooching noise and then we tell him good boy! But he doesn't say any of those words, he knows what his part in the sequence is.
