A Pet Peeve - Spelling Errors

I just knew that we were doomed when "ain't" made it into Webster's.

And I LOVE the pussy from virginia! I have seen similar from one of the younger assistants that, fortunately, no longer work at our hospital. I have learned to try to word things differently. Had that cat been our patient, the file would have said that it presented with a vaginal discharge. Of course, behind the scene, I probably would have told the doc something juicy that I can't write here without giving myself an infraction.

ROFL, this thread is killing me!!!

Ain't made it into the dictionary!?!?! What happened to Ain't, ain't a word and you ain't suppose to say it, say ain't five times and you ain't going to heaven.

I do have to defend the use of short-terms, acronyms and slang. To manipulate language for personal use demonstrates mastery of said language. We now live in a world saturated by technology and using short forms and acronyms such as "gr8" and "lol" in the right context serves a purpose. That doesn't justify such terms appearing on, for example, a term paper, but their proper use is not a sign of stupidity and requires a certain comfort level with the English language. I remember learning French in school and trying to enhance my learning by reading French internet forums. I did not have the mastery of French to even begin deciphering their slang or short forms!

I get irritated reading spelling and grammar mistakes and lazy typing, but I tend to be forgiving simply because I am sloppy at math and I'd prefer not to be called stupid for it. I feel like I would be hypocritical to criticize. I have to say, though, that I've noticed people with legitimate learning disabilities and people for whom English is not their native language put more effort into their typing, speaking and writing and the results are apparent.

I forgive people who are naturally bad spellers, learning disabled, and of course those who don't speak English as their first language... but as a former English major and self-proclaimed spelling/grammar Nazi, I still cringe at every mistake. Here are some of my least favorite spelling errors:

Their/there/they're
Your/you're
Would of / could of (it's HAVE not OF!)
Judgemental
Definately
Where/we're/were
Could care less (should be couldn't)
Hippocritical - and every other creative way of spelling hypocritical
Plural words with apostrophes... snake's, picture's, etc.

I know!!!!!!!!!!!! I got an e-mail from upper level management the other day addressing signing up for holiday's. Seriously.

D'oh! I'm a librarian, and have worked in a few public libraries... one had a sign for CD's (debatable usage), and another had one that said "Smile! Your on camera." That last one had me & my boss so irritated, she eventually fixed it with a sharpie pen. Of all places to spell things wrong - a LIBRARY??? :uhoh:

Disclaimer: I do love my online acronyms... LOL, OMG, FYI, etc. Those aren't misspellings, just shorthand slang, so I don't consider that to be a violation. ;)

Since we've moved on to include grammatical errors, one I am hearing more frequently that drives me nuts is the use of "seen" instead of "saw" as in "We seen that movie last week!".

I'm an PITA too when it comes to spelling and grammar, but since someone asked me; 'Why is it important as long as we understand each other?' and I did not know an answer to it, I got way less persistent in correcting others.

I'm a bit, ok, a total grammar and spelling tartar at work. One of my pet peeves for a while has been a colleague using 'or' instead of 'have'. As in 'the atient appears to of had a settled night'. I pointed out the mistake to her and she just couldn't understand that her way wasn't right. Since then she has apparently checked with more colleagues, accepted that I was right and is now using 'have' when appropriate.

I think my favorite mispellings are the ones I see looking at craigslist. I was looking at the "pets" section and there was a datsun up for adoption as well as a chawawa.
When people just don't know better it can be amusing, but in order to be able to take someone seriously in their written communication I need to see some effort on their part to communicate clearly.
And chatspeak, srsly annoying - I can understand if you are texting on a phone but other than that I hate it.

This one of the errors that drives me the most insane (along with their/there/they're and your/you're)!

Even when texting, I type everything out. I hate chatspeak, for the most part. I do occasionally use 'omg' or 'lol.'

Oh geez... I'm originally from Maryland, and that one is very common out there! My mother was born & raised in Philadelphia, and goes "She says, I says, etc." She knows the proper use of that word, but the Philly is too deeply ingrained in her.

LOL, Jen!!! I'm gonna have to check out Craigslist more often so I can get a laugh on those. I had a "datsun" long ago... but it had wheels and you had to fill that one with GAS!!!

"Chawawa"??? Holy smokes! THAT is too funny.

I'm guilty for chat speak on my cell phone.

I'm usually pretty good with spelling and grammar though.

Not a spelling error, but it drives me nuts when people misuse their, there, and they're!!

Same for its and it's!

Aparently the misuse was so bad in one of my upper level college classes, that our teacher had to give us a tutorial! She said she'd gone through and circled a mistake in about 90% of the papers! :sobstory:

I would told them that it makes them look uneducated! lol
