A Pet Peeve - Spelling Errors

and i even forgot the 've in would've lol

This is a grammar and spelling thread Haarstad, get it right lol :)

Same for its and it's!

Aparently the misuse was so bad in one of my upper level college classes, that our teacher had to give us a tutorial! She said she'd gone through and circled a mistake in about 90% of the papers! :sobstory:

Yeah, that one is annoying, too. But with that one, one could make the case that it was just a typo in forgetting the apostrophe.

Where as their, there, and they're - there's no typo excuse to be made.

The other one is "seen" and "saw". It makes me absolutely nuts when I hear people saying "Well, I seen a blue car drive by". No!!! You saw a blue car drive by!!! :headbang:

Oh well, I digress, now I'm getting into grammar and not spelling.

I think my favorite mispellings are the ones I see looking at craigslist. I was looking at the "pets" section and there was a datsun up for adoption as well as a chawawa.
When people just don't know better it can be amusing, but in order to be able to take someone seriously in their written communication I need to see some effort on their part to communicate clearly.
And chatspeak, srsly annoying - I can understand if you are texting on a phone but other than that I hate it.

You should have seen the one that I saw...Chawawarateri to re-home!

I am NOT kidding, I think they meant Chihuahua Rat Terrier mix.

I love it when we insure that people spell words correctly.
I also love it when we ensure people's homes and automobiles.

LOL. I just saw this on another thread.

weather instead of whether. LOL.

I see that mistake almost as much as the 'their, there, they're' mistakes. What does the weather outside have to do with whether you decide to buy a dog or not? Speaking of which; buy, by, bye.....

I'm glad that I am not the only one that goes crazy over the constant online misspelling, although it does come in handy at times to ascertain the subject's level of intelligence (especially if it is a debate).

ALL of those drive me CRAZY...

except the most common abbreviations, such as OMG and LOL - I kind of like those. And I don't mind occasional "kewl" uses, such as "whatcha think" or "I'm gonna" in instances where it is obvious that the writer intends an informal, "cute" style of communication. But I especially hate the random sprinkling of apostrophes throughout a paragraph, or other errors that appear to be accidentally committed by a writer who either doesn't know, or doesn't care about the correct usage / spelling. I REALLY hate it when I make one of those mistakes, and then notice it only AFTER I have sent the email! Thank goodness for our edit button - I have used it more than once on this forum!

But what about the word "definitely"? Most often, I see it spelled as defiantly. But I have seen MUCH more creative spellings than that. I think that sometimes people just give up and type the basic letters, hoping the correct word will be guessed.

I always had trouble with the word "necessary". Before spell check, I pretty much just resorted to "required" to avoid having to repeatedly look it up! But I finally learned it by pronouncing it (to myself!) as "nekasususary". Hey - whatever works, lol!

Something checks my spelling when I type this... is it the browser? Comes in very handy to correct typo's or when you have trouble with a specific word indeed.

I often find myself using shortened words, or certain abbreviations, that are typically used at my job. Words such as "nabor", for neighbor. When entering 911 calls, we have some common words that are shortened.
One thing I also do a lot of, is words starting with "the" often come out as "teh"...dyslexia or something. LOL

I used to have a coworker who could never remember the correct spelling for medical terms. A chronic one was 'urineating' instead of urinating. It always made me stop and think "Why is this animal eating urine?... and how is it *eating* urine anyway?"

Others include 'dued' as the past tense of 'due', and vomitting. Lathargy is a common visitor in our medical records as well. :/ Oh, and of course, the ever famous... diareah.

I just remembered 2 more job related often misspelled words - "nueter" instead of "neuter" and the more common "spade" instead of "spayed".

'Spade' and 'spaded' make me grit my teeth! I always want to ask why someone took a garden tool to their pet.

Probably is the browser. Used to use Explorer & switched to Firefox awhile ago. Firefox checks your spelling for you, which is the best difference for me & a real lifesaver.

Some of the other words commonly misspelled or misused are, bread, breaded, referring to breeding an animal, & breed when it should have been bred. Also have noticed bit when it should have been bite & vice versa.

How about "peak" instead of "pique?" Interest may peak, but it cannot _be_ peaked. That one really bugs me.

Here’s a snapshot of use and misuse online as of June 22, 2009:
Google search score:

Pique my interest: 3,250,000
Peak my interest: 2,110,000
Peek my interest: 298,000

For something not work related... board. I can't stand it when people type that they are board instead of bored. "Oh? What type of wood are you?" Makes me wanna smack 'em with the ClueX4.

Or as my friend Jodi used to say, they need to get on the clue bus!
