Zarrah a red cinder girl RIP

RIP

I am very sad to say I found this girl dead in her tub yesterday. Sad but really not that surprised. She was much too small for her age since the day she got here, and while she did grow and put on some weight here with me she never got robust or strong. I kept hoping with some feeding and good care she would put on some size and beef up, but she did refuse a few feedings lately and I had been worried about it. I guess the moral is don't buy runts no matter how pretty they are or who the breeder is.

Yea, I feel really bad about losing this snake. She was doing so well on fuzzies/ small hoppers, then I tried to bump her to a weaned/small adult and she had had one regurge and after that a couple of refusals. I feel really guilty, I tried to grow her and she wasn't ready for a larger size prey.

Don't beat yourself up. I'm always hesitant to go up in size, although I know most can take it. Sometimes runts grow up to be monsters! I'm really sorry that this beautiful girl passed on. It's terribly sad.

Oh no...not this girl!
I am so sorry Jen....I was one of this girl's "silent admirers", and I feel horrible right now....
Please don't beat yourself up.

Oh Jen, you can't blame yourself! Some snakes just really aren't meant to live. I'm sure she had a much longer and more fufilling life than if she hadn't come into your care.
A breeder threw a little non feeder snake in with my shipment once, and he was BEAUTIFUL! It was the first time I'd really dealt with a problem feeder/ runt. I was full of confidence that I could get him to eat. He did eat for awhile. He never seemed to gain the proper amount of weight for what he was eating though. He didn't make it, and I was sad, but the numbers of my collection told me, I am a good snake owner.
Think of the many snakes in your collection that have thrived and produced under your care. You are a GREAT owner! There's no way this was your fault. I'm really sorry for your loss though, especially if she was starting to make progress.
My condolences, I'll give you some more next Saturday. Sorry, I can't help but smile at that! I want to see you.

Thanks to all for the kind words and condolences. I am taking a lot of solace in the fact that I produced my own cinders this year, there might be one more female labeled keeper now. But I really wanted to recreate the red and silvery look of this girl and I only hope a couple of mine get the same look to them.

So sorry for your lose Jen!!

But I want to thank you for sharing your experience under these circumstances. This community needs to see all aspects of the hobby. We all lose animals for different reasons.

The sad ones are hard to deal with but you are good herp owner and a good breeder. Chin up, like you said, you have a clutch of cinders yourself this season...congrats!

Sorry for your loss!! I have to agree, I have also 2 animals of serpencos whole sale and both were tiny. In SEP 2009 I got 1.1 from 2008 and they had about 10g to 16g...the female died this year because of eggbound with 120g...

the rest of the animals I've see looked terrible too. especially the adults were in a horrible condition. I won't buy such animals any more too. :(
