Cornsnake morph guide, 2009

So whats new with the 2009 guide I really enjoyed the 2008 version which did discuss eye color and head pattern, but what else is in there?

It's possible that I may leave something out but ... the eye section has images, & some other print(?), this year.
Plus, there is a Hypermacro ID section, some other morphs, and an artificial insemination section (items not in the 2008 edition).

Well

For me I have no bad feelings for Chuck and Connie, I think they are good people.Chuck has put alot of effort into putting together his books,I havent seen any mistakes in them. He knows ALOT about how genetics work, I have contacted him several times in the past asking what will I get if I breed such and such together. He was 100% correct every time! What happened in the past in chat, was it got closed for awhile,it was from of misunderstanding. To bad the misunderstanding never got resolved and they still were here. What is easy to forget is we are all human and we make mistakes sometimes nobody is perfect!

Here is some more new stuff...this is according to http://cornguide.com/the guide.php

New genetic morph: tessera.
· New genetic combinations:
· ultramel charcoal
· sunkissed anery
· sunkissed stripe
· charcoal lavender
· dilute charcoal
· terrazzo amel
· New Hypermacro Morph Identification.

I'm waiting on my ten lot and always enjoy this book. As for mistakes, I am no expert at all, but the mistakes I have heard people referring to in the past had something to do with calling an anery blood a granite, when the trade name granite was already used by another morph so some felt he took liberties with it.

I am also wondering about if it is now going to be changed in regards to the pied sided information. From a few lengthy discussions on here it would seem that Don and others are actually thinking it is not a plain simple recessive gene as much as it is a complex combination of genes in play, thus the reason many are demanding that people should not be selling "het" pied sided when it isn't really known what they are...

I think another bit of controversy with this book had something to do with why KJ won't use the morph name anery?? lol! :) He likes to buck the trends and use "aner" instead?? :)

Personally though, again, I strongly support this book and hope to pass along even more copies this year than I did last year and the year before! ;) Good work Chuck!

Rebecca

I got mine. Lots of information. I like the section on the eyes. Will have to read some sections again to understand somethings.

Its a resource, and good read for the beginner to learn about genetics.. Buy it if you want a basic foundation to learn genetics if you have no clue how to work punnett sqaure..

I don't need to air any laundry here, but I won't forget nor forgive, regardless whether or not that person can remember, bad blood is just that, bad blood..

I intended to post on this thread when i saw it this morning but didn't have time.Lo and behold i get home and find that i have recieved my autographed 09 Cornsnake Guide in the mail today.
I am not sure what happened here in the past but consider Chuck and Connie very close friends.
Not being a genetics wizard myself i respect what they say and listen closely when they speak.
Thanks Rob
P.S.I shall read it carefully tonight and report if i find any mistakes lol.

Rob are you inferring you are like the wizard behind the curtain in Oz?:poke:
I love this guide for the images. I sell copies at shows and use the photos to demonstrate how an animal will look as an adult (I can't always take an adult example with me). People who have bought the book from me frequently come back to express how happy they are with the new found knowledge. I first met Chuck at the old Swap in Streamwood, IL and Connie at Tinley years later. Both of them were very kind, helpful and most of all patient with me. I'm glad I got to know them in person without my world view colored by what occurred online. I get the frequent impression that online personas can be or are perceived dramatically different than what exists in the physical world. Einstein was a egocentric jerk in very life and few people dwell on that because the man sure knew his way around the space/time continuum. Judge the book on merit not how you feel about the author.

Did you guys get yours via USPS or a private carrier? My mail box is down the street and locked so I don't check it everyday, wondering if I should....

Morph Guide

I've read this thread with interest, as I am considering getting the guide. Your input has prompted me to order it. I followed the link given on the first page, and liked the fact that the author allows the website visitor (and prospective customer) to view sereral pages of the book. That's a nice "Amazon.com type" enticement...

I'm just a neophyte as far as corn snakes are concerned, and even if I'm more into Okeetees and common corns, I value the information regarding the entire gamit of morphs. If I were the owner of the previous edition, I would most certainly want to be kept updated with new information, error correction, etc.

It's a good price for a self published book too. I look foward to receiving my copy. Thanks everyone for convincing me. ;)

P.S. How come we don't have any "dancing banana smileys" here?

Dan

Anyone know why there is a 30 day limit to editing posts?

Rich set that up to prevent people from going back and changing things should problems/conflicts arise (legal reasons). He feels that if after a month, you have to go back and edit something you wrote, there is probably something fishy going on. The only exception is in the classifieds and then all you have to do is contact one of the mods with a link to the thread you want deleted because you sold the snake, whatever. If a classified thread needs altering instead of deleting after 30 days, you must copy and paste into a new thread and then we will delete the old one. This has been in effect for many years.

Actually, nope. I was using "aner" back when kingsnake.com was still alterna.com, so that should give you a clue how long before Chuck was around that I was using the term......lol. That has nothing to do with anything because "aner" is an abbreviation - NOT a morph name. The errors have nothing to do with the debate over the term "granite," either. That is an ethical debate and not one over facts. All of the errors that bother me are mainly the weakly supported modes of expression that are stated as fact and not as a hypothesis prior to when it is possible for it to be actually known - especially when the stated mode of expression are only possible if some test crosses are ignored - and with morphs being IDed as "insert name here" based on similar appearances before any possible test crosses have confirmed such a statement presented as fact. I believe those are major problems since they mislead people. Minor ones - like giving the wrong person credit for proving out the terrazzo morph (Boyd - not Galewood) and leaving out morphs he knows already exists - aren't going to deleteriously effect snake buyers, so who cares? Leaving out morphs intentionally may not even be a bad idea for someone who needs a reason to get buyers to buy a new copy EVERY year - you know, leave something out so you have someing new next year in your pocket already. It makes sense from a publishing standpoint, so who can blame him. It's smart to do that even if it isn't what some people think of as "right" or "fair." Who cares about "fair" when the goal for any such venture is ultimately profit? Duh.

KJ, how is it an ethics issue about Granite? People came up with the name totally seperate from the original Granites now known as Terrazzo corns? People started using the name and it stuck. Only so many people knew about the original Granite project! But as you said, this isn't about that arguement. And funny people think Chuck is some sort of name god that is responsible for names! He's just posting up information down into a book to share with the masses instead of it being a select few people knowing about things.

http://cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16976

And excuse both of us, I was also at the table when Galewood came by and was talking to Chuck and said HE was the one who proved the Terrazzo corns! So for all Chuck knew, Boyd didn't exist! Chuck talked with Galewood and we both got to take pictures of these corns he had. And so we had our info and pictures, and Chuck put it in print.

And then weakly supported facts of how stuff is expressed? I'd like to know exactly what your referring to, cause all Chuck's putting in his book is easily found and reproduced in any genetics text book? Certainly there are traits that are still needing to be proved out on how they work out. But why be so hesitant to put a label on something. Why not try to get others to speak up about what they are finding in their crosses? That's what is so neat about this publication! It's all written down information that increases year to year as stuff is found out. And stuff that is still up in the air yet is stated as such as far as is known as fact at that point in time. Granted opinions can vary on such things! And everyone is entitled to an opinion! And in book form too!

And this idea you have of him hiding morphs to publish about them next year? Oh come on KJ! Your more intelligent than that! What's the chance he's going to have new morphs created AHEAD every year to publish about them, and tell others, oh hush, we'll not announce this new morph till 2010, and this other one till 2011.... Now that's just pure funny to me! I know you've GOT to be kidding! You act like he's got some sort of conspiracy going on! Like he's some sort of morph mafia king! Using secret tactics, and waving his magic wand... Some of us love Chuck, but come on, he's not THAT good! And does not the first sentence of the CMG clearly state...and I quote... with permission...from page 2 of the CMG

This guide is intended to act as a starting point and a reference, as opposed to an all-encompassing knowledgebase.

So see? it wasn't meant to include EVERY iota known or thought to exist about cornsnake morphs! First sentence! So come on KJ, I have no quarrel with you nor have I ever had to. But this above statement of yours had to be put to the truth that so plainly sits in my lap here plus a big of good old fashion common sense!

Now I'm going to go and have a good read. I'm very thankful someone has taken the time to put down into writing the known info, the suspected info, and the new info that is out there on cornsnake morphs and genetics! All done by himself, book by book. Definetly worth more to me than the pittance he's asking for it! I've enjoyed all his editions. Which do get better every year. I actually was sad to see his genetics section go but I understand with all the info he wanted to put in. It was simply getting too big so he put the genetics info into his other little book he puts out. Plus apparently he put that information for FREE on his website so that information isn't gone, just found elsewhere for those who still need to learn genetics.

http://cornguide.com/geneticspages.php?page=1

Plus I'm very thankful to all the people who cooperated with him on this project. This has NOT been a totally Chuck only book. Not by a long shot! Chuck's only put the info into book form. Information that comes in from all breeders! Pictures that came from many different people! It's a book that sure Chuck's the author of the words, but the information and pictures in that book are totally the hobby itself being put into written form. That experts and beginners alike can get ahold of information and LEARN. Not a, oh a few people knew about this project that is twenty years old and oh, *gasp* how DARE these OTHER people call these OTHER corns the same name? See how NOT having this information in book form allowed that mess to happen?

I'm very thankful to Chuck first and foremost for being willing to put his time in that is NOT paid for, putting this book together and available to people in this hobby. And thankful to everyone else that continues to contribute to the project.

Thank you!

I wonder if Creamsicko will stick in the CMG... If it does, I can't see the ding bat who got the name to stick will be mentioned! *LOL*

Just for the record, everyone who left in a huff back during the chat blowup is welcomed to come back here. No grudges on my part. Life is too short to dwell on the past.

Well i dont care for all these arguments and moans but i would like to say that I am looking forward to receiving the new book from Charles, ive only spoken to him over email, he seems like a decent bloke. Every year i order his book and every year I enter an old delivery address and have to email in a hurry to request it be changed lol

As for people criticising his and others book for sepilnlg mstieaks...have you never made a typo before? Try writing a document thousands of characters long and not make a typo!

Cant wait for Don S's new book and would love for Kathy to bring out an update.

All fantastic books in my opinion.

Thanks

Can you imagine if Rich Z wrote a book? Not so much a care guide, but just the story of his life with cornsnakes. The excitement of making all the new morphs! The trials of caring for 4000 snakes, or whatever it is. The most exciting projects ever! The projects that didn't work out as planned.

It would be a great retirement project, lol! Probably no time or energy for it UNTIL then, I would bet!
